You are SO right, and I thought the same thing. Anthony admitted it in the "Greggshells" podcast.
Think about that, and how well they were still being paid for such little effort. Yeah, I guess Anthony and Jimmy could pull shit out of their ass and be funny, but basically these guys were being paid millions to just show up at 6 a.m. and bs for a few hours.

Opie yells at Tom demanding to read the John email on air. Tom says no and then gets into an "F you" parlay with Opie. But, as soon as Ant takes control of & mitigates the situation, Tom immediately seeks a solution with "legal" so that the email could be read. When Opie engaged Tom, it went strait to conflict. When Ant engaged Tom, the Opie-created conflict was resolved.
It amazes me that Ant was the one to get fired with management eager to resign Opie with a bonus. After all the years Opie was obviously the difficult problem personality to deal with. How many dozens of clips are there of Opie getting into fights and screaming at management for the most ridiculous things?
I still don't believe it was really because of Twitter. Ant said a lot of worse stuff ON AIR before.
Well said Kevin. Mainelli was right when he called Opie a petulant child. Opie's conflict resolution strategy with Tom proved that to be true.
Opie did this on the air, but was a company man behind the scenes. Probably told Tom that he was just doing it for the show.

This is the first guy they have clashed with, where I side with the party opposite to OandA. They had every right to be piss ed at the dude for being shmarmy, but the guy made some excellent points. This was 8 years ago, and Mainelli fucking called it.
They knew they were in the wrong too, the sheepish way they ended the call then the next day they come back after thinking of some comebacks and act all cocky.

This whole OandA show got by on Anthony and Jimmy. Opie was their "hole".
Scott Shields agreed Opie stinks, but look at TACS and Jim and Sam. They needed Opie to stay relevant.

I think Anthony partially agreed with John. Opie was so personally hurt by this.
This (2007, 2008, F.H. Reilly's seating, Grape Fight) was the era where Opie would storm off, and throw his headphones, and walk out of the studio. You can hear it here. Supposedly his wife + in-laws played a part, like "My new family doesn't want me to work on a show like this anymore." Just an all-around bad scene.

Yeah. This was easier to find in the old days, but the text-message and F.H. Riley's tweet and Danny Ross' firing all happened in a row right around Dec 2012. None of it existed on-air, but Opie walks out of the studio on Dec 10th 2012, leaving Ant + Jim to start the broadcast by themselves.

Opie stayed out for Dec 11th + Dec 12th before returning. So the weekend immediately before 10-12 Dec was the F.H. Riley tweet firestorm.

Yes Anthony mentioned again recently that Opies in-laws didn't like the pedophile/Uncle Paul stuff (which Jim did more and more) and didn't like some of the other really hardcore sexual type stuff. Really ironic considering he's given their daughter and grandkids a damn good life on bits like that. I'm just surprised he didn't stand up to them and explain how radio works. Y'know since he's been doing it since he's 18.

Opie cannot take criticism in any form. Opie vs Ant started over A saying how O used to rattle spoon. Opie vs Jimmy: O flipped out because J said that O keeps guests waiting. Opie vs other jocks calling him a board op ALWAYS degenerated into O screaming childish insults at them without ever getting specific. It got way worse on KROCK because O felt pressure to prove his contribution to the show as ratings fell. Then O had kids & that's when the show lost its greatness (around 2010). Nobody wanted to be there. Executive producer Sam made it worse. It was very obvious and maybe even inevitable.
^^ Yeah, this is the core of it. Opie was pretty clearly aware of the show's decline (or, at least, the executive relationship decline), right around the SXM merger and Erik Logan departure, and started going through strenuous hijinks to "befriend" management, or to throw pre-emptive tantrums, or, later, to side with management, framing himself as "their guy on the inside" who would tattle or backstab whenever necessary. I can imagine his spiral into embarrassment + self-loathing, but this was the worst possibly way to handle it.
I love every era of the show.
Without a doubt Mr Brenman, the worst of this show is better than anything else that's been on radio since. But as a hardcore listener it's impossible not to notice personality quirks.

It's just proof of his insecurity. When Ant got fired, Opie was relieved that the show wasn't given to Ant to carry because it meant he didn't have to do any work to continue, meanwhile Ant built his own network. Then, when Opie and Jim split, Opie was livid that Jim got the remnants of their show because it meant he had to build something new and he didn't have the motivation or drive to do so.
Christ Opie, "Eff you!!" never sounds cool or threatening. It's like whipping someone with a pool noodle instead of like... a whip.
He's complete S. Period.
Mainelli modeled the advantage of being upfront and honest, rather than trying to micro-manage one's image as many large corporations attempt to do. Although I don't agree with Mainelli, I respect his courage in discussing things openly. Also, I now have an idea of where he's coming from.
There was always some type of drama going on with Opie. It's so embarrassing, it just reminds you of a teenage girl
he has no other way to get attention. if he were able to do other things, he'd be doing them.

Lets me honest. John was right. Opie and Ant at this point didn't care and was phoning it in. They have even stated NUMEROUS times in fights and on their own shows now that after "XM thing" they where pretty much done. Then losing Philly was it.

Wow. As much as I want to hate John Mainelli I keep agreeing with him. Part of me wonders if every time Opie used to have temper tantrums over "management" it was because guys like this were just legitimately trying to make the show more entertaining.

When John was saying Opie knew ahead of time and Opie was trying to deny it, his tone suddenly changed dramatically and Opie started using his unmistakable "lying voice".
I don't have the timestamp, but he has a very obvious tone and rhythm when he thinks he's being duplicitous. It sounds like a child hiding in the curtains.

Jocko Adams duuuude, opie is one of the least self aware people in a position of success I’ve ever seen. He has the most obvious verbal tells; constantly projecting his own bullshit and when he gets called on it he usually goes into a defensive shell of mocking or name calling. Listening to this on June 21 2024 and it’s incredible how true John was with everything. And he shut Opie up a few times better than anyone has.
This Pd had it out with Howard Stern when he worked for the New York Post when Howard first went to satellite. Howard got him fired from that job.

Meanwhile Ant is taking notes and literally creates his own internet podcast studio in his basement not long after this and opie stays in obscurity.
They weren't on KROCK for the challenge, it's cause there was a bigger audience and they got a lot of money doing it, even if that meant taking the hit by not talking as openly.
Which was the one where the producer told them that Opie was sitting on a throne, and they needed to add more sound effects, so they moved the broadcast to the bathroom?

Wow. Listening to this in retrospect, you can really see how out of touch John was. The direction they took the show, having big guests that may not fit their "demo", was WAY better than what this fool had in mind. Silly characters? News segments? What a clown.
