I went to Tulum last year and I totally understand the Taxi/commuting scenario you mentioned.
Round trip from Cancun to Tulum we took the Ado bus which is basically their coach bus. That was super easy. Then we stayed in Tulum Centro (Tulum Center) and used the Collectivo (the small white vans very similar to the Dollar Vans in Brooklyn, NY iykyk) SUPER cheap since its was like $2USD but your spanish gotta be good cause you have to know how to say your stop to the driver. Which wasn't too bad for us.
NOW the only way for us get from Tulum Centro to the Hotel Zone in Tulum, the place everyone talks about, was by taxi, and they inflate the hell out of the price for a 10-20 min drive. Like $50-$80 is insane. My friend was able to bargain them down, but that in itself is exhausing.
THEN theres the fact that we met people from FL on our exursion and they picked us up in their rental to take us to the hotel zone, and when we were leaving for the night we were stopped by the police for the most random reason. They collected the driver's ID and would not give it back to him until the driver gave them money. They requested a random amount of $300 USD = MX$5.5K !!!!!! The driver only had $100USD on them so that is what the officers were able to get, and then they let us go.
Outside of that I still had hella fun 🤣
I hate that you had issues. I travel for a living and my travel nightmares make the best stories (much much later), they no fun when they happen though. I missed you and I am happy you all enjoyed what you could of the vacation. Happy Belated Birthday 🎉

Glad you had a good time. It sounds like better planning and more research would have alleviated a lot of the issues that you had.
Potentially, but they were mainly transportation issues that I knew about prior to going - I wouldn’t be able to know the extent or the pros and cons of all the alternatives without dealing with them first hand
