  • It was Valentine’s Day, 1990 and the Chicago Bulls were facing the Orlando Magic for the second time this season. In their previous match versus each other, Michael Jordan scored an outstanding 52 points. This had the arena on their feet for tonight’s matchup. This wasn’t your normal game though, as a matter of fact, it was far from it. Watch what the announcer says as they’re introducing Michael Jordan____________. Yep you heard the man correctly. Michael Jordan was not wearing 23 nor was he wearing 45. You may be thinking, well why was MJ wearing 12? In todays video we’ll uncover the secrets behind how this event unfolded. Let’s dive in!
In the 90s the most popular American figure was most definitely Michael Jordan. Everyone wanted a piece of him, and I mean that literally. You see going back to that same faitful Valentine’s Day, a locker room attendant placed Jordan’s jersey next to his locker at 5:30 pm. But by the time Jordan arrives for shoot around at 5:45 he reports, his jersey and only his, is no where to be found. Bulls staff then contacts the magic staff in a hurry to find his uniform. In fact, the magic even used their cameras to look into the crowd in order to find a fan wearing an oversized jersey. With no luck, they ended up asking fans to borrow a jersey but none were big enough to fit the 6’6 superstars frame.
Bulls then forward, Stacy King said that MJ was extremely upset and refused to wear another number. You might be asking yourself, why didn’t they just get one of his other jerseys for him? Well back then athletes weren’t as privileged as they are today. For example, they flew commercially as well as only receiving a few jersey every season in which they had to take care of themselves. This is why you wouldn’t see too many jersey swaps back then. With no other alternatives the Bulls last resort was a nameless number 12 jersey. With Jordan already reluctant to sport the jersey, this only added fuel to the fire.
Michael Jordan literally obliterated the Orlando freaking Magic. He dropped nearly 50 points, 2 assists, and 7 rebounds. Shockingly, Until 2022 this was the highest scoring output by a player that’s dawned the number 12, when Ja Morant’s showed up and dropped 52. Even better, during the 1989-90 season Jordan averaged 45.5 points vs the magic. Although the Bulls fell short, losing in overtime this doesn’t change the fact that this is one of the most storied games ever, with this moment even forever captured in this Sam Vincent trading card.
Days after the incident, an employee noticed that a ceiling tile in the visitors locker room was misplaced. This lead to further investigation which found MJ’s iconic #23 jersey tucked away above a tile. A few days later, an Orlando Magic security guard ratted out another guard, who planned the entire heist. He left the jersey on the ceiling tile to later retrieve it on another day. Nevertheless, this night will go down as one of the most infamous games of all time.
Micheal Jordan has always been the icon who has worn 23 and 45 but who knew 12 was also his number. It goes to show that Jordan is one of the goats no matter what number he wears. Planning an entire heist steal Micheal Jordan’s jersey, which eventually would prove to be unsuccessful, just shows how desperate people are for his jersey. Anyways, thanks for joining us on the fascinating story behind the stolen jersey. Let us know in the comments if we should do more of these videos.

Impressive video youngster!! I have that Sam Vincent card and I got it when I was about 13 years old and I always wondered why it showed MJ wearing #12 ? We always thought it was just some kind of error card until several years later and I heard this story about what actually happened.
