Having a very clean stables is a good practice. I used to get told off for taking to long to clean the stables. But I used less shavings than the other groom's

Fantastic demonstration for stall cleaning! I clean my stalls in much the same way. All your tips are spot on! Sweeping the wet spot and turning over the banks makes a big difference in keeping the shavings clean. Deep Bedding will retain heat and eventually mold if it’s not turned over and aerated.
I do lime the wet spots everyday. It not only dries but also neutralizes the smell of urine. Especially in the warmer, more humid weather using lime reduces the humidity in the stall caused by the urine.. makes a huge difference!

Love it! We use finer shavings at home, so sifting is much easier. At shows we always seem to get these flakey shavings, and we bed super deep. Either way, this will be a great resource for new stall cleaners or the ones lacking in technique.
It drives me crazy when people leave wet shavings and don't work up the bedding, including the edges.
I agree completely, you can always tell when wet shavings are left in the stall and as a cleaner, it is so much faster and easier if you do a good job, every day.
I would love to see Amy clean a whole stall, full speed!

Thanks! I'm going to share this one with my hubby, who "helps" do our stables daily & is way too thrifty with the shavings, leaving wet spots. This is simple, straight to point & I won't have to say "toldya so". Yay!

      Ok I will...eventually.
I agree it's impressive that my old man is helping clean the stables, but the real reason is he feels guilty that he was partly why I quit show riding THIRTY years ago. He resented me spending all that money & time away from him. "how much for that new turnout saddle? Jeez I could buy a decent car for that!" he used to say,
It's only that our newish filly made my life feel whole again & he loves her as much as I do.
We HAD to build our little stable block in a hurry from nothing - we lost all our outbuildings on Black Saturday where we live in Kinglake - & the filly fractured her fetlock, had surgery & in plaster, with strict confinement ordered. So yeah he is cleaning out the stables he is proud he helped to build. We built wo stables coz we bought an aged mini ex broodmare as a companion/teacher for her. That's Gidget the Midget.
So, in a nutshell, it's his own bloody fault, innit? I'm kidding...sorta.
Now he prides himself on how well he packs a hay net. Heh.
I will make a vid tho!

I hope further segments cover more challenging stalls. Back when I was a stable hand there was one mare that seemed to pee sooo much, then she walked around and mixed that pee in reallll good. Soft poo got incorporated into the mess. Nightmare. And I wasn't supposed to remove all the bedding each time so it was a quandary how much I could get away with removing each time. Possibly there was something that could have helped, but I didn't have any authority - and honestly no ideas at that time even if I did.

wonder what everyones time per stable is. i give 10 mins per stable which includes mucking out, new bedding, new water bucket, fresh haynet. having to muck out 30 stables in the winter by myself, i try to always keep to time! how long does it take you to do them? (takes me 20 mins to do my own horses at home tho!)

    • @lindylufromoz5111

I can allow myself 30 mins (semi-retired & only 2 stables) giving me time to do quick feed & tack room tidy-ups. With so much rain & flooding lately (Nth Central Victoria) we've had a couple of wash-outs, so being able to allow extra time to fill nets, scrub out water bins & faff about is great for us. Thanks heaps.
