I love that you had those two beds dedicated to experiments. I did that with a small bed about 30 years ago and it clearly showed me that I have no tolerance for things that spread willy nilly and abandon their original spot, like spreading spring phlox (which I've never planted again) and what unknown plants are going to do, before I commit to them. It was a great experiment, well worth the time and effort. I'm impatiently waiting for your June videos of your front and back gardens, you've done soooo much this spring!

I love the early morning in the garden too. I get up 5 watch your vidio and drink my coffee and out to the garden I go. love the birds and the big deer have already went all the way around my fenced in Flower bed

I’m with you on the compost. I used to be so intimidated. I have a large wooded area and decided to mimic the forest floor. Then I found out it’s called cold compost! I pile all the garden debris in one area and forget it. It works great.

Wishing you the very best on your zinnias. I tried to be very judicious with my spacing of zinnias this year, but the birds had other ideas & now I’m starting some indoors to replace in the areas that the birds munched mine!😂

Good Morning. Something you may want to consider in doing the garden beds with drip tape as it will not clog with sediment as well as it will lay flatter then the tubing. I have used tape and found it has worked better then the tubing and it is cheaper on the pocket book. Just a suggestion. Love how everything is coming together in all of your gardens.

Thanks to you I grew snapdragons from seed for the very first time. I never transplanted them because I didn’t get around to it, but OMG it smelled like grapes!! Every time I walked past the 6PK I had to stop and smell them. I’m a snapdragon convert now. 😂
I also love the voice over style of video. Maybw not every time but I imagine you can get alot done not moving the camera so much. I need to update my drips too!

Will you be spraying down your compost with water at all? I do the same method as you but we get more rain than you do and mine breaks down very quickly.
Question in regards to drip irrigation. We recently found out that we have a sprinkler system in our grass lawn, on our new property (2 yrs in, and just found it 🤦🏻♀️). Would I be able to tap into it and use drip tubing for a new garden bed? I’ve been hand watering everything and kinda burnt out. (It’s actually not too bad as it gives me a chance to see and inspect my plants). Drip irrigation is way way overwhelming and intimidating.
You definitely can tap into it for drip! It's kind of a big job for a newbie though. See if you can find an irrigation contractor near you and get a quote. It shouldn't be too much $ to just tap in to one sprinkler head and get you started! If you want to try it yourself there are tons of videos on YT showing how to do it!

How is the cut flower center island coming along?
fun video. you look so cute with the dirty face at the end. for your next wild area…how about finding a remote area where you can do that each year and just cut wild flowers down without pulling out. the birds will come and eat some of those self sown seeds. i did that in my los angeles street parkway area. i waited till the first fall rains and walked out while it was raining and tossed the seeds onthe ground and lightly raked them in.
Love seeing the planting beds and now we wait for the next round of pretty things.

Something that I do with many flowers once they have set seed, is instead of composting them, I "spot compost" them where I have bare ground, and want them to grow. This works well to achieve a cottage garden style, and native pollinator gardens using asters, monardas, and such. And also when you have a lot of ground to cover but not a lot of $$$ to do it. It's basically just helping nature do it's thing. Of course, it looks a bit messy, so if you're a neat freak, it won't make you happy. In my own garden, however, I've used this method for years. Today's mess will become a new garden in just a couple of seasons.
Morning, How do you know what is a plant vs a weed when you just throw a handful of seeds into a raised bed? I'm lucky that I know what a flower looks like when I plant one. eye roll here LOL
You learn from doing, lol. But google your plant, and then add "seedling". Most likely you will find the images you need.

Never heard of “Juiced Orange jessamine”. Medium sized shrub;
-evergreen
-yellow tubular flowers
-heat tolerant
-drought resistant
-zones 7-10
-hummingbird and butterfly 🦋 attractant!!!!

Because of you I’ve started a cut flower garden too🤗I usually get 3-4 bouquets a week!
Question: You mentioned that you were going to use DE in the chicken coop. How do you use it and which kind did you use? I see “food grade” DE on Amazon. When I read the directions I get scared because it says you shouldn’t inhale it, etc. So is there one safe for animals?

I discovered the smaller profusion zinnias last year. I purchased a salmon color 6 pack from Wyntour Gardens last year and planted in a container with other plants. The zinnias mounded beautifully and bloomed until frost and did not get powder mildew. This year I have planted three pots with a select profusion zinnia per pot: cherry bicolor, double hot cherry, and double deep salmon. Next summer, I am going to plant more single flower type pots with these type of zinnia. If you think zinnias fit Best of the West category, I think they would look beautiful in your orchard garden or other garden in front of your house in mass plantings (especially the double hot cherry).
I haven’t had the heart to pull my snapdragons! Still blooming after being cut, but definitely not like before. I want to put something there instead, but everything takes too long at this point. ? Suggestions? If I plant zinnias, they will be there in about a month I guess.

i’m so glad you’re doing this& hope you’ll be sure and report back. I did the same thing planted some plants 6 to 12 inches apart and did one 8 foot bed with scattered seed not thinned as they say on the Zinnia growers site on Facebook. Everything in my master gardener training taught me to space plants out so it was really hard to scatter and leave them but I do want to do the experiment too so I’m interested to see how it turns out for you!!!
When I had bunnies down here in southern California, we kept them in a hutch in the shade.
I would freeze water in 2 liter bottles and put them in the hutch with them
They’d lean up against them keeping them cool
Would the bunnies and chickens benefit from your garden clippings?

Good Glorious Morning! What do you think of setting up a table (outside your big gate on street) with cans of slightly spent flowers, instead of composting them? Maybe your daughters could make a large 'Free Flowers' sign to draw attention to table. This could be a good community outreach. Do put a wire or cable to keep table from being taken.

Everything is lovely…your greenhouse is so beautiful. I suggested it before but I would love to see your table in the GH painted the color of your office door. That pop of color would take it to the next level. Kudos to you both! “The property” is shaping into a gorgeous home and gardens!
From anyone who has done drip, we know what a blessing it is to have Jason attack that for you in the garden, especially since the heat is kicking in. Otherwise we’d all be watching a lot of videos of Janey putting in ‘Another round of drip!’ Woo hoo! Lol Thanks Jason for saving all of us 😂😂😂
Cold composting is the way to go! Low effort input and you still get compost in the end. I add my kitchen scraps and weed and disease free garden waste. In our dry climate, it takes a bit longer for dry things to break down, but I usually have some compost by the next year.

Look at your sunflowers...they have really taken off, very cool! I like the idea of sprinkling seeds and taking a wait and see attitude. Your have so many areas in your various garden locations , you can also have experimental areas as well. A lot of work but what a gift! I always loved early morning gardening as well. Love it ALL.
