It's an odd thing to think about. In Japanese, cuttlefish and squid are named the same, and Nintendo is a Japan-Based company so I dunno if cuttlefish are realitiscally possible, it's still cool to think about. I'd also like to point out that Captain Cuttlefish isn't a cuttlefish, he's an inkling. It's just his localised name. I really do not know if we'll get a new species at all, but 3 species ties in to the REALLY heavy (dare I say excessive) motifs of the number 3. I'm sure all of us are completely unsure about what a new species could be and if we're even getting one at all. TL;DR: Cuttlefish or a new species at all are realistically unlikely and Cap'n isn't a cuttlefish it's just his localised name.
It would be really fun for cuttlefish to be a playable species, but In my opinion, they're very similar to the inklings, and not really unique in their own way, per say. Great concept, though!
yeah i think this is a good point. nintendo is pretty deliberate with their character design and is sometimes obsessive about making characters (playable characters especially) clearly distinct
Makin' them distinct is somewhat easy, all they even need as a baseline is different eye markings, different hairstyles, and different kind of..actions? i dunno, the octolings act different in the weapon shop when you look at the weapons.
I think Callie and Marie are just an inkling sub-species because their ears are longer and thinner, same as Frye. But my theory for the new dlc is that we might play as sub species as inkings and octos
i know it’s silly but having some kind of salmonling would be so cool even though they don’t produce ink in real life. i just like the idea of fighting against salmonids in salmon run and then fighting with salmonlings in turf war or whatever
I don’t know, with the octo expansion, having a new playable species was something new, but doing it again wouldn’t feel as special. Just like how the story mode of Splatoon 2 felt like a copy paste, something similar could happen with the DLCs
The ink thing doesn't really matter much when normal fish like the Salmonids are making ink. Callie and Marie's swim forms were also shown on the splatfest trucks in 1 and in Mario Maker through the mystery mushroom and they look like squids. That being said, having cuttlefish playable would be pretty cool
@@MetaKnight964 that's simply inklings and octolings, there could be some sort of twist in the storyline that allows other species to shoot ink. plus, many of the creatures in splatoon have probably been in turf wars before, but idk.
This feels like a crucial detail, but it probably doesnt have a better lead to it. Since we're basing it off of creatures who can produce ink, the only other species we saw other than inklings and octolings do that is big man, from the boss fight. I dont think anywhere says how or why he can create ink like inklings and octolings can, but that's something i havent seen be brought up, maybe because of irrelevancy or it hasnt been considered before.
hmm, yeah true!! maybe 'mantalings' have a humanoid form like inklings and octolings, and their swim form is like big man- a manta ray!! so it could then be said that maybe big man is just in his swim form all the time, like octavo!!
I've been thinking about this for a while, since I watched a Caitlin Koi video about the Splatoon iceberg, and she mentions that in the Splatoon 2 Octo expansion there is some kind of sticker of two past idols that happen to be called "The cuttlefish idols" and the Splatoon book Haikara walker talks about it, you should check out Caitlin's video.
So, this is a really cool concept. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a new species coming to Splatoon, but I honestly just don’t see it happening. I mean, Octolings make sense because we had seen them before in game. But CUTTLEFISH? I mean we saw what a cuttlefish fish would look like via the former captain’s dried-out model and it doesn’t have that extra flap (or whatever you want to call it) on it. While it would be nice to have another option, I just don’t think Nintendo will add another species unless they have dead solid reasoning as to why they are adding them in advance.
in the "The Splatoon Music Iceberg explained" video, the youtuber Caitlin Koi talks about there being Cuttlefish Idols and an illustration of them exist in something called the "Haikara walker" the official artbook for the Octo Expansion
Honestly I don’t think we’re going to get cuttlefish. I feel like cuttlefish and squid both just evolved together to both become inklings, so they have cuttlefish and squid ancestry. In real life, cuttlefish and squid are more closely related than they are to octopus. If they were siblings, octopus would be their second cousin. Even if they did add cuttlefish, I think they would be too similar to the inklings anyway and they wouldn’t have any plot relevance. It would just be having a new species for no reason, and we know the devs love their lore so it wouldn’t happen. The octolings have been around since the beginning, and there’s evidence pointing to them have been being playable back then as well. One thing I think is interesting though, is that vampire squid in real life, are so different from other squid. They’re not really too similar to any known cephalopod species, and could actually be their own species. And I feel like Frye could be a vampire squid, just because of how different she looks from inklings and octolings. No inklings’ hair look like hers, and she only has 2 tentacles instead of the usual 6, or even 4 for octolings. That wouldn’t make sense because vampire squid have 8 arms like octopus, but shivers hair confuses me too so eh. But I don’t know if they’ll ever acknowledge Frye possibly being a vampire squid, it might have just been inspiration for design with no lore purposes. I’d be okay with that though, Im content with just having inklings and octolings, because I feel like a third would make things over saturated. If people just want species for customization, I think there should just be more customization for what’s already within the species we have. Also no, no inktolings. Inktolings bad
i don't know where it's from, but there is official nintendo art of a cuttleling idol group, so the idea of them finally becoming playable is big possibility. to see the art, just look up the splatoon cuttlefish idols. it should show the art
The subway sold it for me, if we get a new species in the dlc and if its inside the subway it could very likely be true. Though, Marina being an octoling was the teaser, maybe vampire squids could be a thing (frye)
4:45 the pic said scout and that gave me an idea what if at some point in the dlc there is some kind of energy emitting from the subway 🤔 and the inklings and octolings can sense it and send you and three other agents now called scouts out and what if it's not a metro or subway what if it's a secret subway to a underground military base built by humans and the inklings/octolings find water suits which could grant them water travel from there they follow the energy to a strange island where they find cuttlefish from that captain cuttlefish has some explaining to do about why he never told us about the other cuttlefish and that could tie into the backstory we've always wanted. 🦑🐙
I heard agent four is supposed to be in the dlc. Honestly, I think agent four got less attention. What i mean is that agent four was only in the story mode for splatoon 2. Agent 3 was in Splatoon, Octo Expansion, and splatoon 3. Agent 8 was only in Octo expansion. I feel like we should know what agent 8 did after Octo expansion.
there actually is mention of cuttlefish people all the way back in splatoon 2 octo expansion. theres a pair of cuttlefish idols who seem like they used to be a big deal in the splatoon universes version of the 80s, and you can see one of their cds (featuring a picture of them on the case) in the background of one of the octo expansion stations, as well as mention of them in the octo explansion artbook. and, unlike captain cuttlefish, who is an inkling and just had his name changed to cuttlefish in the english version of the game, the artbook explicitly calls the cuttlefish idols "cuttlefish idols". so theres definitely precedent for adding cuttlefish as a 3rd playable species, given that its already been established that cuttlefish have inkling like forms
ah, i just looked it up for good measure and it turns out captain cuttlefishs japanese name is the word for both dried shredded squid and dried shredded cuttlefish. so he is, technically, named after cuttlefish after all
I love the idea of cuttlefish in the game, but I hope the don't do another underground metro. I kinda hope they do something like an abandoned building or something, but another thing to remember is that Pearl and Marina were leaked for DLC too.
tbh i dont want a new species it would be cramped and sort of a half assed idea to copy the octo expansion, its better if they would expand the inklings and octolings customization
Idk about cuttlefish, but what I DO believe, is that the "large Scale paid DLC" is actually the name, "Large Scale" Splatoon loves their puns, so it could easily be referring to a literal Giant Fish Scale that might be, idk.. Used as a shield? New island that's a floating scale of an ancient leviathan? Idk all the details yet, but that is my guess nonetheless
Personally I doubt they would just introduce a species out of the blue. The only reason Octo Expansion had us play as an Octoling is because they were already established in the story mode. No other types of -lings are shown anywhere so bringing one out of nowhere would seem weird for Nintendo. If anything it would be Salmonlings in my opinion. Salmonids are already able to use ink based weapons and are already established as a key species in the universe. While I doubt it would happen it would be the most likely option.
Ooh, I hope so, one of my OCs, PJ, he's a striped pyjama squid while it doesn't have a cuttlebone, it still looks more like a cuttlefish, I had this conversation with my friend back in 2016 when she drew him for me. She said that it looks more like a cuttlefish but we looked it up & it seems like it isn't technically a cuttlefish but since it looks like one, I could select cuttlefish when playing as PJ if this does actually happen.
I'm fairly certain that cuttlefish already exist in the series however they're musicians and the fact that they're cuttlefish is more hinted at than anything...I'm pretty sure Caitlin Koi talked about it in her Splatoon music ice burg
The enter and don’t enter is probably the best bit of evidence. That image is obviously NOT an octo or inkling, and it’s the most likely place to be where we enter for DLC
There is one problem with the plushies in Hagglefish Market being a new species: the blue squid plush, which is a squid based on the head, has the same tentacles as the "cuttlefish" plushies. So, why would a squid plush have the tentacles of a cuttlefish plush?
iirc in the lore of the bands in splatoon, it implies that some of the urchins participate in turf war, then there's also Big Man who produced ink in story mode
Looking at cap'n cuttlefish's design, and especially his dehydrated state, he is very distinctly an inkling. However Callie and Marie have star shaped pupils, the only ones we ever see. However However that may mean nothing looking at the other idols' eyes
I don’t think we’re gonna get a new species without some sort of explicit reference to them beforehand, my guess is that if one is on the way they’ll be mentioned in the first dlc, and then usable in a second dlc/ splatoon 4
I think that the metro station is a good little piece of evidence ce because as of yesterday it has been confirmed that the DLC will be where that station is. Cool vid btw love this whole idea
I’m still upset how there’s an actual Nautilus in the game but they aren’t the same as the Inkling and Octolings! Where are the Nautlings and Cuttlings?!
captain cuttlefish is not a cuttlefish but instead an inkling but there are already cuttlefish in the game, in the octo expansion (station stick 'n' move) there is one specific album made by two cuttlefish idols
Cap’n Cuttlefish isn’t actually a cuttlefish. Cap’n Cuttlefish is his localized name. His Japanese name is a Atarime which means “dry squid”. Also the reason Cap’n Cuttlefish looks different from other Inklings is because he’s sun drying. It’s a process Inklings (and possibly Octolings? Though I don’t think we’ve seen a sun drying Octoling.) go through to allow themselves to live longer. It causes them to have dryer skin, lose their ink, and aren’t able to go into their squid form. Also at the end of the story mode, Cap’n Cuttlefish literally turns into a floating squid.
well, about the in thingy actually all cephalopod species produce ink,for example, the rossia also shoots ink (maybe splatoon 4....?) but anyway thw ink thing doesnt matter, inklings and octolings dont shoot ink THEMSELVES.
Just a thought I thought I should put out there- what if Nintendo decides to make a hybrid between the squid and octoling? I just thought about it while I was watching but this is just my theory.
If we were to get a new species we would probably get a manta ray. Because of big man. Octopus v Squid v Manta ray splatfest kinda like the one in splatoon 2
Captain Cuttlefish and his granddaughters are not cuttlefish, but cuttlefishes do exist. There is an idol group called Cuttlefish Idol, but they resemble inklings down to the T so it could just be a band name. If they were to be implemented into the game and how it would play with the main storyline, my guess is that they were thought to be extinct, or trapped in Alterna until Agent 3 opened a gateway, making it similar to Octo expansion but instead we play as a cuttlefish trying to make it to the surface.
Cuttlefish already exist and it’s likely that whey will make their arrival! I believed it’s Hikara walker and if im wrong maybe it’s the art of Splatoon but we’ve already been introduced to cuttlefish idols via these books. Cuttlefish though hard to tell the difference between them and inklings cuttlefish will have long ears that are flat on top and curved along the bottom just like frye, Callie and Marie along with the star pupils. Obviously it’s not confirmed that they will come to the game but it is likely and they do exist!
It would definitely be very cool! It would also make sense. Splatoon 3 is all about the number 3, it can be seen everywhere. If we’d get a new species, it would be the *third* species!

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT
It would be really fun for cuttlefish to be a playable species, but In my opinion, they're very similar to the inklings, and not really unique in their own way, per say. Great concept, though!
yeah i think this is a good point. nintendo is pretty deliberate with their character design and is sometimes obsessive about making characters (playable characters especially) clearly distinct
They could make them distinct though. Whilst still following the traditional playable body type
Cap'n Cuttlefish is actually an inkling despite his name
“Guys I think I have ADHD”
i know it’s silly but having some kind of salmonling would be so cool even though they don’t produce ink in real life. i just like the idea of fighting against salmonids in salmon run and then fighting with salmonlings in turf war or whatever
I don’t know, with the octo expansion, having a new playable species was something new, but doing it again wouldn’t feel as special. Just like how the story mode of Splatoon 2 felt like a copy paste, something similar could happen with the DLCs
110% agree
The ink thing doesn't really matter much when normal fish like the Salmonids are making ink. Callie and Marie's swim forms were also shown on the splatfest trucks in 1 and in Mario Maker through the mystery mushroom and they look like squids. That being said, having cuttlefish playable would be pretty cool
Salmonids have slime really
it would be better to have a species that can produce ink naturally.
They will never exist bc how will you call them in Japanese?
@@MetaKnight964 that's simply inklings and octolings, there could be some sort of twist in the storyline that allows other species to shoot ink. plus, many of the creatures in splatoon have probably been in turf wars before, but idk.
@@ricestrange wdym by that
I think this would be a neat concept!
Still hoping for like inktoling hybrids as well if they made those
I don't think it's gonna happen in this game it's been only a few years since the octolings escaped but we can still hope
It has been mentioned that other species partake in turf war, maybe the difference is that instead of being able to refill they have to reload.
Sea slug or sea hare can use ink and are super cute!
in the "The Splatoon Music Iceberg explained" video, the youtuber Caitlin Koi talks about there being Cuttlefish Idols and an illustration of them exist in something called the "Haikara walker" the official artbook for the Octo Expansion
idk man, cap'n cuttlefish is just an inkling. a lot of these seem like grasping for straws tbh.
How would having another playable species be over saturated?
inktolings ARE canon. the 100x/333x battle photoshoot glitch proves it
i think its most possible for us to have anemone-lings. look at HARMONY!LOOK AT ANNIE! they're hidden in plain sight.
@@MetaKnight964 i'm asking the same question
They can still make it work there are difference in cuttlefish and squids they can illustrate in their body.
Honestly, a cuttlefish DLC would be so awesome.
If they added a third species that would work perfectly for a tricolor splatfest
I really want sea bunnies instead 😭
is this because of syzygy
Lil Judd making Catlings with fuzzy ooze please. Catgirl inklings for the memes.
i don't know where it's from, but there is official nintendo art of a cuttleling idol group, so the idea of them finally becoming playable is big possibility.
to see the art, just look up the splatoon cuttlefish idols. it should show the art
I know Squids and Octopus Irl produce ink but turns out cuttlefish do as well so there's that. I had no idea until now
This is the 2nd time that you've thought this. And this is the second time that I'll say that Cuttlefish is confirmed Inkling
Craig is confirmed to be an inkling, not a cuttlefish
actually it was proven that captain cuttlefish is an inkling in some Japanese artwor but I still like the idea
New species might be wave 3
Maybe, but i think it will just be about pearl and marina
The subway sold it for me, if we get a new species in the dlc and if its inside the subway it could very likely be true. Though, Marina being an octoling was the teaser, maybe vampire squids could be a thing (frye)
I actually love this, i hope they make it a reality
The first evidence could be a jellyfish.
there actually is mention of cuttlefish people all the way back in splatoon 2 octo expansion. theres a pair of cuttlefish idols who seem like they used to be a big deal in the splatoon universes version of the 80s, and you can see one of their cds (featuring a picture of them on the case) in the background of one of the octo expansion stations, as well as mention of them in the octo explansion artbook. and, unlike captain cuttlefish, who is an inkling and just had his name changed to cuttlefish in the english version of the game, the artbook explicitly calls the cuttlefish idols "cuttlefish idols". so theres definitely precedent for adding cuttlefish as a 3rd playable species, given that its already been established that cuttlefish have inkling like forms
ah, i just looked it up for good measure and it turns out captain cuttlefishs japanese name is the word for both dried shredded squid and dried shredded cuttlefish. so he is, technically, named after cuttlefish after all
I don't think it's cuttlefish.... since cuttlefish are still squid(ika) in Japanese(koika). So it would be just inkling....
Pretty sure there are idols in haikara walker that are specifically called cuttlefish
Idk about cuttlefish, but what I DO believe, is that the "large Scale paid DLC" is actually the name, "Large Scale"
Splatoon loves their puns, so it could easily be referring to a literal Giant Fish Scale that might be, idk.. Used as a shield? New island that's a floating scale of an ancient leviathan? Idk all the details yet, but that is my guess nonetheless
I love this idea can’t wait to see where this goes. Perhaps the “large scale” is the Mcguffin of sorts of the story
I feel salmonlings or any really fishlings are coming, this is because while playing salmon run, the salmonids do spread their own ink😊
I have loved splatoon since I was 5, and a new species sounds awesome!
I'm personally holding out for the Rabbits. Especially since this year is the year of the Rabbit. But we'll see...
I shall like to point out that Cap'n Cuttlefish and the Squid Sisters are Inklings. Their last name being Cuttlefish is just a coincidence.
Heck yeah. I've been wanting a playable cuttlefish character since splatoon 1
I really think the idea of sea hares are cool, yes, I know that they aren't cephalopods but they DO spread ink when they are disturbed
not to mention the fact that at the possible DLC area the signs have the colors of the Chaos vs Order splatfest.
Have no idea if you bought this up before but in splatoon 2 dlc there are 2 idols who are canonically cuttlefish. Search up splatoon cuttlefish idols!
I'm fairly certain that cuttlefish already exist in the series however they're musicians and the fact that they're cuttlefish is more hinted at than anything...I'm pretty sure Caitlin Koi talked about it in her Splatoon music ice burg
mantalings would be epic
The enter and don’t enter is probably the best bit of evidence. That image is obviously NOT an octo or inkling, and it’s the most likely place to be where we enter for DLC
There is one problem with the plushies in Hagglefish Market being a new species: the blue squid plush, which is a squid based on the head, has the same tentacles as the "cuttlefish" plushies. So, why would a squid plush have the tentacles of a cuttlefish plush?
personally i would say it’s manta raylings. big man could be like octavio , who is stuck in his swim or squid form. manta ray form?
iirc in the lore of the bands in splatoon, it implies that some of the urchins participate in turf war, then there's also Big Man who produced ink in story mode
The word for "squid" and "cuttlefish" are the same in Japanese, they're probably just lumped in with inklings
Biologically too they’re very similar to squids already
Yeah yeah yeah
Looking at cap'n cuttlefish's design, and especially his dehydrated state, he is very distinctly an inkling. However Callie and Marie have star shaped pupils, the only ones we ever see. However However that may mean nothing looking at the other idols' eyes
I want a lot more character customization options please!
I need sluglings, but cuttleing would be neat, I just think it feels too similar to inklings because cap'n cuttlefish
Wait till he sees the new trailer
I don’t think we’re gonna get a new species without some sort of explicit reference to them beforehand, my guess is that if one is on the way they’ll be mentioned in the first dlc, and then usable in a second dlc/ splatoon 4
I think that the metro station is a good little piece of evidence ce because as of yesterday it has been confirmed that the DLC will be where that station is. Cool vid btw love this whole idea
this sadly didnt age well.
I’m still upset how there’s an actual Nautilus in the game but they aren’t the same as the Inkling and Octolings! Where are the Nautlings and Cuttlings?!
Nautilus can’t camouflage or shoot ink they can explain write this fact off by evolution.
Nautlings with the nautalis 47
@@upscale9109 asking for nautlings and getting the nautilus 77 is like asking for a pet deer and getting buck shot
@@mrblakeboy1420 yeah
captain cuttlefish is not a cuttlefish but instead an inkling but there are already cuttlefish in the game, in the octo expansion (station stick 'n' move) there is one specific album made by two cuttlefish idols
came back here cause he was right about the subway.. it is dlc :D
I think the mantaling species was very cool. But unfortunately that probably isn’t the case
What if humans appear in the dlc as both the main villains and allies
I wouldnt mind any species if they make it so a shark can somehow produce ink then i believe they can add almost anything
well, about the in thingy actually all cephalopod species produce ink,for example, the rossia also shoots ink (maybe splatoon 4....?) but anyway thw ink thing doesnt matter, inklings and octolings dont shoot ink THEMSELVES.
Plushie: looks *slightly* different
This guy: GUYS LOOK!! ITS HINTS FOR A NEW SPEICIES THAT IS ALREADY IN THE GAME
We don’t need more species. We need more customization for the two that exist currently 🥺
cuttlelings would be super cool!!
I bet that we would get a new species in the third game and well, now it's a big rumor in the spoon community! It'll happen with the DLC!
Just a thought I thought I should put out there- what if Nintendo decides to make a hybrid between the squid and octoling? I just thought about it while I was watching but this is just my theory.
They're called Inktolings
If we were to get a new species we would probably get a manta ray. Because of big man. Octopus v Squid v Manta ray splatfest kinda like the one in splatoon 2
I would be so happy if there was a different species Splatoon 3
1:56 please just say Pine Tree. It looks like the most basic of renditions of a pine tree. With the double triangles overlaid each other.
I had the same thought
There is no new species. Orders and Splatoon 1 that all get right
Captain Cuttlefish and his granddaughters are not cuttlefish, but cuttlefishes do exist.
I want a salmonoid personally. I think it would be funny to see Nintendo try to make the salmonoids look cool
It would definitely be very cool!
It would also make sense. Splatoon 3 is all about the number 3, it can be seen everywhere. If we’d get a new species, it would be the *third* species!
