Haha! Yes . . . Opeth has to be appreciated as a whole. Not for the low-attention span, the newbies will have thought they listened to 3-4 separate tracks 🤔😛.
ruinsane100 agree. Also, if you watch his performance with Bloodbath on Wacken 2005, I think that's the best demonstration of death growls in the history of extreme metal.
They are sublime musicians. Knock-out perfect craftsmanship. They just play these insane riffs while singing, managing their foot pedals and effects, headbanging til they got hair in their mouth, still hitting every note, sounding amazing. They're on a whole other level.
On a personal basis, this song is and has always been a dedication to my deceased father who discovered Opeth late in his life and loved them. He, who used to be a melomaniac with all the 70's and 80's music
The most used bass brand and model in the world, basically. Especially in metal, because of its punchy and nicely round sound. It's easy to sound good with a good Fender Jazz.
Hearing this version messed with my head because they seem to be counting the beats differently than I always have been in my 100's of times listening to the album version. I'll do my best to explain... They count it off here with sort of a mid-tempo 6/8 feel at roughly 130bpm, but I always heard it as a fast 3/4 at roughly 200bpm. Like when Mikael says "Ghost of mother's bed", I always thought those words were landing on dotted quarter notes in 3/4. So "Ghost" lands on beat one, and "of" lands on the offbeat of beat 2. When they play it here though it seems like each of those words are just landing directly on a beat in 6/8. To my ears, hearing it all the 1st way grooves so much better. Someone please tell me what to believe!
Yeah, when I first heard this version, I was a little thrown off. But as I kept listening to it, this live version had a little more of a prog groove to it. I can't decide which I prefer.
I honestly didn't notice anything but then again i really don't care for beats, rhythm, tempo, etc. That shit honestly makes me confused. I don't want math in my music, but i get why it's there. And i am drummer myself. I think playing by feeling and jammin' out is more important than being living metronomes.
The keyboards in opeth is like bass in most of metal Its not dominant and you dont notice it like the guitars and vocals but it makes the songs so much better
I know they don’t growl anymore (still unreal) but when you growl and sing that good how can you not want “make opeth growl again” I’ll support and buy everything single album and song they make but that younger me still can’t help too think “imagine if he growled on this song” one day Mikael one day! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
This live performance is so much better than red rocks performance. Everyone commenting On red rocks video how great the sound and video production was which is true but they play it slower in the red rocks performance and Michaels voice sounds more strained and blasted. Roundhouse tapes > red rocks
In the Red Rocks show, they play the song at the right speed (the song is 10m30 on the album). Also Akerfeldt is much younger in this performance, of course is voice is less strained here haha. I mean how long can someone growls before it take its toll on the vocal cords ?
@@alexandremarchand8815 Its true I dont expect the man to be able to growl like that into his 80s but I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate how great the roundhouse tapes performance really was. Roundhouse and Lamentaitons are peak Opeth performance.
This version is such much more energetic than the one on the new Blu-Ray. Plus, unlike the new one, Axe is right on every note. Too bad the mix isn't anywheres near as good, and we don't have Joakim's backing vocals. Oh well, can't have it all.
Thanks man! I mean, a C2 is 7 semi-tones lower than a G#2 so that's probably why. Voice types are more about your comfortable range. My lowest is a C#2 but my highest is a C6/C#6. I'd still be a bass because my Tessitura (loudest comfortable range) lies between E2 and E3. Mikael is a true bass, probably because of all the smoking. I wouldn't be surprised if he could hit a B1/A1.
Fuck I love opeth , they have gotten way more clean as the years go on since , i learned this on guitar , have been just literally started learning drums and goddamn blows my mind some of these drummers.
Axe nails it on this one too---i don't like his playing as much on the red rocks blu-ray---double bass fills sound weird, and he sounds like he's dragging at times. Could have been because of the thin mountain air---affected Mike's voice too.
Saw em in Philly earlier this year with Gojira, Mastodon, DTP, and Eagles of Death Metal. They still rock. Not as much with studio recordings, but live they still rip.
+Job Muiles No, I don't think so. Keyboardists are very common in Power and Symphonic, as well as Progressive Metal. Most Death Metal bands don't use them.
Funny how Mikael looks so harmless but his growls can scare demons away, and his clean vocals call them back and console them. Just my 2 cents
Poetry. And accurate 👏
Nice
That's sweet 🤩😍
_Do you have any idea how cleverly that was worded?_
Nice.
If you don't like an Opeth song, just wait 30 seconds.
techmaster242 That’s how I got hooked
Exactly. There is always some ear candy waiting further away.
True
Haha!
Yes . . . Opeth has to be appreciated as a whole. Not for the low-attention span, the newbies will have thought they listened to 3-4 separate tracks 🤔😛.
Martin doesn't even need to mute the bass, his hair does all the work.
Side banging pro!
yeah! pity he's balding now
Leonardo Mirenda the ones with the longest hair always go bald first
It's new technique called hair muting
In my opinion, no one growls better
+Tyler Miller *Growled
+Tyler Miller a come on, I worship Mike as much as anyone but both Peter Tagtgren and Matti Karki are miles better
regardless of who you THINK is better, neither of those guys are HALF the writer Mikael is.
Stormtrooper Elite mikael all the way. his growls are so crisp. only other vocalist as good imo is Christian Alvestam
Randy Blythe

Cant unhear this goddamnit
You made my day lol
hahahahhahaha Excelenttttttttttttttttttt
Omg hahahahaa
Mikael's death vocals were sublimely brutal. Nobody else will ever come close to sounding that good. Just listen to the part at 8:21. Holy shit.
ruinsane100 agree. Also, if you watch his performance with Bloodbath on Wacken 2005, I think that's the best demonstration of death growls in the history of extreme metal.
¡ Mikael Åkerfeldt and Phil Bozeman I say !
death vocals, death vocals
Even he can't come close to that anymore :DDD
@@lalol10 When they come back for the encore (Eaten), he says "Thank you very much" in a growl voice and i'm like, "!!!!". Brutal vocals.
Beauty, thy name is Lars Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Talent, thy name is Opeth.
Am.. am I his wig now?
Mikael is so talented. He plays rhythm and sings/growls without even looking at his guitar once. And his riffs are hard as fuck.
They are sublime musicians. Knock-out perfect craftsmanship. They just play these insane riffs while singing, managing their foot pedals and effects, headbanging til they got hair in their mouth, still hitting every note, sounding amazing. They're on a whole other level.
his talking voice is just wow

Jesus....they use to sound better live than in the record..........This is breathtaking....
The only time I saw them live was for the Heritage tour. :(
They mostly still do, the only thing that's declined is Mikael's growling. His clean vocals have only gotten better.
Opeth is one of the best live sounding bands ever
the live version is more intense
no they don't
The perfect band. The result of infinite talent. From best growl in metal to most beautiful voice in the history of mankind...
Sadly it’s not appealing to many people, til this day
Man they're songs are so well written...
Talent, pure and simple
Love the whole song.. the outro is absolutely mesmerizing!
Ah, it's good to see myself on the front row. It doesn't seem like 8 years ago.
I still think of it as the best gig of my life :-)

Trve Kvlt I always headbang like never before :-)

Mikey Thompson so basically you’re extremely attractive. There wasn’t an ugly person that I could see 👀
Love this. Mendez looks so into it, great playing

Coolest headbang ever.
I wish they played this and in Chicago. They played Harlequin Forest, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, and The Grand Conjuration which was cool
FUCKING COOL!? Understatement of the century, dude i'd kill to be in a gig like that. I live in Serbia and they've never played here to my knowledge

This is from 2006 lol
@@GioTheRealDeal yes but his clean vocals are still great...
Opeth at their peak! Different now, but this is my Opeth. \m/
This is the Opeth I loved. Huge dynamics in their music. Totally the opposite of what they are now.
Mikaels growls seem to recover
So we might see a performance like this again
A pit in an opeth concert?
Well, I wasn't expecting that. Great performance as always \m/
Mikael growls effortlessly.
I love when Axe just GOES for it at 7:10
He's not fucking around

Eh fairly often

I'm too high to work this out in my head right now, seems like a really minute/semantic difference to me
This is the things about performing live, you don't do the same replica of the song, otherwise it would be boring. At least that's what i think.
