  • How does a steam locomotive work? Well... with steam! But how is the steam made? And how does the steam actually propel the train? These are common questions we receive and the best way to answer them is to see a steam locomotive in action! Using digital animation and NC&StL No. 576 as a model, this cut-away visual shows how math, science, physics, and engineering work hand-in-hand to turn coal and water into physical movement. I've watched countless You Tube videos on both real and animated steam locomotives. This is one of the best I've seen!

    Wow! This is the best and most easily understood explanation of how a steam locomotive works that I've been able to find! I'm a history nerd, and my current fascination is steam trains (specifically central Colorado railroads). So, thanks for putting this together so we can easily get an understanding of locomotive power.

    5:43 That's one cool animation! Is that what 576 will look like when it is restored?

    • @alexmullins2541
      @alexmullins2541 2 года назад +4

      More or less. 576 had a few different looks during her 10 year career. I do not speak for the team here, but you can probably expect to see it restored to an appearance very similar to the way it was displayed in the park as a static display. I wouldn't fret if you like the other styles though, during her long career as an excursion locomotive it's extremely likely that the appearance will evolve and at some point you will likely see the fully streamlined version, and the green version (JK about green, but point is, nothing has to be permanent, there are many stories to make and tell).

    I wander if it is possible to "collect" used steam to reclaim the water and excess heat.
    Also it is intereting if it possible to replace water with different liquid to reduce boiling point and working temperature.

    "in a special railcar behind the locomotive" so engines like the Ruby Basin have a tender instead of a coal bunker now?
