This was a challenging video to edit (lots of tech gremlins) but HUGE thanks to Jason for his time, he is a real gent and I cannot recommend his products more.
@@muleavenger9772 honestly unless you’re painting something you really can’t get a bigger brush to I would go with a size 1 or 2 with a very sharp tip.
I have a bit of a habit of going through synthetics by different brands etc, but I do own Sable Brushes, I have the trio of Artis Opus, Series S, M and D, I only use those for fine detail work and the like, any other brush for basecoating etc I just use synthetic brushes, you can feel the difference with sable, I feel in my head it immediately upped my painting game but I don't use them every single time, I use the brush goop too! I don't know what it is but the smell is addicting! I LOVE the smell of the stuff lol
With synthetic versus sable, while I love my Raphael 8404's I tend to reach for my Winsor & Newton Scepter II Gold's which are hybrids. I think the biggest problem people don't realize is they treat things like white taklon as what all synthetics are about.. Or like what Jason said, how they lump all of them together. I loved their old Bomb Wick Artillery brushes, and am looking forward to trying out the new line, especially with oils (and acrylics, obviously separate sets). I've tried several synthetics, and every time I buy brushes I aim to try out another type, just to see how it goes because that's how you find out what your own personal style works with the tools.
Is there any synthetic brushes that dont curl up at the tip? Cos that's mostly why I stay with sables... Tried MANY synthetics like W&N, Rosemary, Army Painter. Non of them has held up...
Not with pro Acryl, it maybe that you have thinned the paint too much and the binders have seperated or it could be the primer is somehow oily, if you have greasy skin and handle the model for example.
It's a pretty interesting conversation about sables and synthetics. It is hard to see sable hair keeping up with the increased demand as this hobby expands. I'm very interested in learning more about the different 'grades' of synthetic brushes. There is nylon which are not good, and monument hobbies which are good but is there any way to comparison shop synthetics on anything other than price?
Great point! I agree with you but I don't know of any way to Grade the synthetics on anything other than price yet. when I have bought synthetics recently I have always bought "higher end" art brands but certainly an interesting experiment to try.
@@RisingApe yeah I've seen that Winsor and Newton also make 'good' synthetic brushes, and they are a big art brand so I'm tempted to try them out. I've had varying QC results from cheaper sable brushes so I want to try some synthetics
I care, This is all covered in the video but just to be clear, sable brushes are really good, and better at some things than synthetics but decent synthetic brushes are as good in most cases. My take is that we are all grown ups, if you know that sables are trapped and killed to make paintbrushes and are fine with that, then carry on, if that piece of info changes the picture for you and helps you make a different decision then great. The purpose of this channel and this video is to chat to people who know what they are talking about and get the facts. Then people can make an informed decision.

This needs way more views, so interesting.
I agree! Thank you, by all means share on social media 😉
Very interesting discussion!
Cheers Nick, Yeh It was a fun chat to have
Great video Ape! Jason is awesome and it was an enjoyable conversation to listen to
Glad you enjoyed it! cheers for watching
Awesome interview, very informative. Really enjoyed. Thank you Mr Rising Ape!!
No, thank you
I got the pro synthetics as my first brushes and I am so excited to use them.
I still use mine, they are excellent for all but the very finest details
@@RisingApe May I ask what you suggest for a detail brush? Anything specific?

I swap about quite a bit, I do use some sables if I am doing fine work or glazes but mostly use synthetics these days

Aye, I really enjoy my pro synthetics but also use a brand called Pro Arte
Haha his footage is a bit trippy 😵💫. Thanks for posting this
I know right, this was my first stab at a recorded interview… needless to say I have learned a bit since then 🤦♂️
Great job
Thanks!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Thank you 👍

The monument ones I use in this video have held up nicely, no tip curl, that said you can fix too curl in synthetic’s, I have a video on it.
@@RisingApe Thanks for the reply! Well, gotta try MH synthetics, just hard to get here (in Sweden). Subscribed by the way! :)
Has anybody else had a nightmare applying Pro Acryl paint? The 1st couple of layers don't seem to want to stick to the primed model 🤷♂️

I've found that I don't really need to thin pro acryl paints really at all, and this will happen if I do.
Germany? Is this the same manufacturer that makes Da Vinci brushes?
Think so

@@DavesMiniMenagerie yeh go for it, we can compare notes, from what I understand, Synthetics are much more common when oil painting.
Rosemary and co make really good synthetics great video really helpful and informative 👍
Just the quality discussion I wanted to listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Honestly i could have chatted for hours more, glad you enjoyed
Beef? Poultry? Pork? Lamb? Who cares! Sable? Oh my Godddd!!!!
Wtf with people these days?
