So, does anyone else watch these vids on 2x speed? I love them, they are so soothing to watch. but my adhd goes nuts trying to watch it at normal speed -.-
Love it!! I had a neighbor put one of these on the curb and I grabbed it right away. Similar restoration but I don’t paint the inside. Just season it with oil and a couple rounds of charcoal and good to go!
---Same, man. My neighbor just put out an old fancy smoker/grill on the curb, so I brought it home today. I plan on restoring it. It looks like one of the heavy duty expensive ones from back in the day. **Now I'm watching videos for restoring ideas. :)
@@moonblink well, as many others have said, don’t paint the inside. At least not with normal spraypaint. Use at least high temp paint for the outside. And depending on the stuff you may be able to paint the inside too, but only if the paint instructions specifically mention that it can be used for that. Otherwise just season with oil. And do a few empty burns. Just to get rid of all the toxic fumes. Don’t throw meat on a freshly painted smoker. Also applies if you buy one new
Don't pa int the inside if you can avoid it. I would put on a heavy coat of vegetable oil and then run it with some charcoal. Keeping it coated with Veg. oil will keep it from rusting on the inside, as long as you remember to remove the ash. Leaving the ash inside a smoker / grill will always help it to rust on the inside faster.
@@WesBland I need to to fix my barbecue as well...I use to keep the ashes inside...has started to rust...I used to put water on the charcoal after I finished the barbecue... now I've learned my lesson 😃
Well its pur vinegar. But this works only like a miracle if the rust was just created shortly beforehand with sufuric acid (you can even see the stains running down the hood, which would not look like it if it was real rust, also no pitting). Too bad many restauration channels use this "trick" to make the restauration look even more amazing. It would have been a nice restauration even without the artificially added rust. Why not keep it real?
@@smallshot83 finally someone else said it.!! About time.. Like yes great job but ya don't have to make it worse for us to believe it was worse then it was
If you want a challenge, try assembling one of these grills ruclips.net/user/postUgkxCx5fHawkK9OoV-ojFrY8JLnZrFwAmvUt . I am a technician by trade and the technical instructions were easy to follow. No reading, just pictures and diagrams. You assemble everything in 5 steps from the bottom up. Step #1 - Assemble 4 Legs and Wheels; Step #2 - Add the Front Cover and Cross Bars to support the frame; Step #3- Assemble the Burner to the Lower Grill Housing and install the knobs; Step #4 - Install the Side Burner and side shelf; and Finally Step #5 - Install the Upper Char- Broil Lid, Cooking Racks, 3 Burner Railings and Lid Handle. That's It and you're done in about 2 hours and 40 minutes. You have the option to pay for assembly after making the purchase - I would strongly suggest that you take it if you don't want to be bothered with this challenge. The only tool I used was a Phillips head screwdriver and a standard pair of pliers. The grill cost a little more because of the side burner, but this is what makes the grill so versatile and popular among backyard grillers. Have fun and enjoy!
Kinda my thoughts, too. Kind of feel this was a "created restoration"...none of the bolts or nuts were truly seized. Nothing broke.... there isn't even any pitting of ANY kind. It's like he took rusty water from something else and dumped it all over this thing.
You're a genius threading all of the nuts onto one long bolt and clamping it to clean them all at once. Idk why I never thought of that. I'm out here cleaning them one by one like a big dummy 😂
A firebox that thin would be burned through with any regular use. The main chamber would also be caked with creosote and grease. Looks like it was purchased, used a couple times, and left outside.
Great job on the restoration, but the only thing that bothered me was he cooked on it right after and didn't do a burn in first. That food would have all burnt paint fumes in it. Probably why he didn't taste the food lol.
Thats because its not a true representation of a restore. Had it been, the bottom of at least the main part of the smoker would have been blown out from charcoal use.
I have a grill just like that that I have used for 6 years and there are holes rusted in the bottom of the grill and fire box. No way this grill was ever used regularly. Also mine has been outside with no cover the whole time and there was no surface rust on in. So I think this was rusted on purpose for the video, which is why it came off so easily.
I love that they use every day tools. I love the toy and tool restoration videos from the other guys with the sand blasting and powder coating. Sometimes I just want to see a barebones basic restoration I could do at my home garage
These channels kill me. Everything is an attempt at visual and presentational deception, with the “plausible deniability” of…, “I’m not trying to deceive anyone. What you see is what you get. I actually restored this object.” They do this knowing full well that ignorant people watching (the vast majority of the viewership) will be given to think that the item in question is much older and corroded than it really is. Another segment of the viewership is more motivated by the “relaxation” aspect of watching these videos because they have anxiety issues or stress. Nonetheless…., the entire presentation is a LIE.
As always, if I am watching his video, I quickly jump to the most important part . The "How it works after repair" 😂 It saves time for me. And wow! That meat was cooked nicely!
So essentially you sanded off all the original paint to allow the entire surface to rust in order to make this video? It looks like you sprayed it with salt water every day as well...
Exactly I have this same grill and I have left it outside for 5 years with no cover and it doesn’t have any surface rust, but it does have a huge hole rusted in the bottom of the grill and one in the fire box, so obviously this grill was never used regularly. And I agree with the salt water. You can see where it runs down the sides of the grill like something was sprayed on it and it ran down.
you can see when he's removing the rust the sanding marks in the steel, besides that I have never seen a BBQ or anything painted lose every bit of the paint and there is almost no pitting as well like it was all surface rust from at the most a week.

looked like a brand new grill you left in the rain for a week. especially like the 7 lump charcoal you added so you could remove it.

Hi from Fort Wayne, Indiana 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
i watch these videos when going to sleep. its so relaxing to me xD
I wish I new someone that would do my old grill. I love this, and would love to see mine restored
That didn't sit outside to long....none of the bolts broke. LOL. Very cool project.
Why does it seem like this was... rusted on purpose just so it could be "restored"? I mean I understand the attraction but come on man...
it doesn't matter, its about the tinkering with stuff and the process.
ok, now you are just showing off - with that char, smoke ring, and moisture. Grill master!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kind of suspicious how good of shape that smoker is under that very thin layer of rust.🤔
It's not even a good smoker. The guage of steel is very thin. Not worth rescuing.
"manufactured patina"
