That note on the tenth fret is D. The Emaj7 chord has a D # note in it. That D sharp is really important to that chord, and a regular D note will clash over the Emaj 7 chord. Close but wrong. Meanwhile D is fine over an A chord and even over the Bm chord. D is the fourth note in the A major scale, D# is not in that scale at all. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks a ton Mike! Just wondering on that last bit, why does the 10 on the high E string only work over the A chord as opposed to the Emaj7 chord?
