I remember the original ARP Odyssey. Back in 1972, I was an A/V geek in high school and running the FOH mixer for Friday night concerts/dances in the gymnasium. One of the acts had this guy that looked and played guitar a bit like Jimi Hendrix, and who had an Odyssey on a small classroom table. He really only touched it occasionally to do a brief electronic sort of scream between songs-not much real playing. After the concert, I was helping pack up the PA system and I remember seeing a janitor up on stage trying to retrieve the little table and watched in horror as the power cable on the ARP snagged on something and the unit started sliding off the table. The Jimi lookalike turned around just in time to see his expensive little toy about to fall off the table and hit the hard wooden stage. He dove in what appeared to me to be a sort of slow-motion Kung fu move-like something out of the Matrix, and amazingly he caught it just inches from hitting the stage. The janitor just looked on with an apparent mixture of embarrassment and ennui. These things if I recall were selling for a thousand bucks back when this happened. By today’s dollars that would be like the price of a Voyager Pro XL or even more I think. But he made quite a save. That was my memory of the original ARP Odyssey.
Literally, 5 years ago, it looked like analogue was over... It is a great time to be alive. Analogue Renaissance in a price bracket that's affordable. Bring them all back.
Fantastic review! I know I am biased because I do stuff for Sonic State too but blimey, Nick is the governor when it comes to reviews. Can I encourage those of you who enjoy his sterling work to buy that rather lovely track he played at the end please? (link in the notes above) It would make him a happy bunny!
Definitely some great coverage here. Nice music too! :-) I am definitely looking forward to someday buying one of these new beasties. I had access to one of the originals (rev 2) for about 6 months back in the 1980s, and I had a blast with it then. It would be nice to see it connected to the SQ-1 squencer.
Hear hear Gaz. I agreed with you 100% when you said during Sonic Talk that people should be buying these tracks. I have purchased both this one and the the Dominion tracks. I'm loving these tracks at the end of the reviews. Thanks for another great review Nick!
Gaz Williams Bought the track, it not only is a cool piece of music but also a great way to show my support for Nick's work and the lovely Sonic Talk podcast which I so dearly love. Best wishes from Germany and keep up the fantastic work, Nick, Gaz and all other panelists! Very good review btw., wish I had the dough to buy this wonderful synth, it's a bit too steep for me.
Nick, I want to echo lots of the comments here - lovely synth piece at the end! Also, thanks so much for your objective reviews. I feel like I truly find out the legit pros and cons of gear when I check out a Sonicstate review. Hugely helpful -- many kudos!
to be honest, you can achieve these sounds with an ms20 mini, you could buy a doepfer dark energy and dark time and an arturia micro brute or you could buy a doepfer a100 starter for a bit extra
Yes what a synth Even though to some it may not initially seem as powerful as others out there (I use the word initially), it's the aura of the unit that is it's allure IMO I'm waiting for the crazy sounds people will provide from it And it's just beautiful
You should had this too your arsenal I've added it to mine and everyday I turn it on it more and more fun. Super is with the sq1 or doepher sequencer just got my flash back hooked up and using the electro harmonic step as a separate lfo
Wow Nick, your song at the end is mesmerizing. I had to come back to this video just to listen to it again. That analog tone with that melody is haunting, like a high lonesome call. Well done! I look forward to your Sonic State videos.
16:29 - wow! impressed ... 17:17 - goose bumps !!! THATS SO F***IN AMAZING !!!! awesome job - this last part makes me wanna get one now. Fantastic Job Nick !!!!
As far as the issue with tuning by ear, here's what I do for live performances. I have headphones connected to the headphone jack and a mute or kill switch in front of the main outs, so I can hear the synth even though the audience can't.You can also put a tuner right before the mute to get more fine tuned results. Mix the oscillators one at a time with the tuner or by ear, bring them up to the levels you want them mixed to, viola! It sounds like a pain, but it really isn't.
5:20 "Type 2 is the so called 'Moog infringement' filter" Dear god! I've gone cross-eyed! Arp copied the Moog filter, then years later Korg copied the Arp synth and included the copied Moog filter, and now Behringer have cloned a Korg clone of an Arp copy of Moog filter.
Great overview, and the song at the end is absolutely beautiful. Thanks! I was curious about the bit about the curve on the square wave (at 9:33), so I decided to do some tests of my own. My conclusion is that the difference between a 90 degree square wave and a slanting square (such as is on the new korg) is pretty much inaudible. However once that slanting square is waveshaped to put a curve in the slant (such as on the old arp), that does indeed slightly change the character of the sound. However, it's subtle enough I can't imagine anybody would notice the difference. I imagine other aspects of the synth affect the character of the sound much more.
Best review yet and lovely tune at the end which shows how musical this bad boy can sound, tbh, most of the sonic demos, korg's official one included, have not done this synth justice.. Well done, nick!
Why do I subscribe to this channel? All these well done, in-depth reviews of top-notch gear by delightfully charismatic folk, such as Nick, just make me want to spend more money on gear! And then you guys have the audacity to actually play beautiful tunes on the gear! Ah! It's like you actually care or something!!
Beautiful demo at the end! I'm starting to watch the Sonicstate review videos now, as much to gawk at synths, as to hear Nick jam out at the end. His ms20 rack jam and the mfb Dominion jam were awesome too! Too many good synths coming out right now!
Compared to a MS-20, I'd pay $200 more for an Odyssey any day! The ARP is much more flexible and has a better sound (although the jack field on the MS-20 and the resonant HPF evens things up feature wise, but not sonic wise).
I went into a music shop yesterday and tried the Korg Arp Odyssey, the Korg Monologue, Arturia Minibrute and Roland SE-02. All sounded great, but the Arp won it for me. Just to have that many analogue synths sitting around plugged in to play with, I had to pinch myself - I started making music in the late 1990s and in general you could only get proper analogues second hand. We are in a golden age of analogue. Any of these machines would be a great addition to a studio, but fwiw here are my impressions: - Monologue. Very powerful, solid sound. Very full at the low end. Great waveshaping. Filter has a Curtis-ish sound, nice and strong; it didn't sound typically 2-pole to me. Looks stylish. The controls on the envelopes didn't work for me at all though - not intuitive enough. Probably after a while you'd get used to it. Overall, for the price, bearing in mind this is a two osc VCO synth, it is incredible. - Minibrute. Love the multimode filter on this. You'd be tempted to get it just for that, esp. as it has an input for processing stuff. The waveform mixer with slides is great, gives you visual reference of levels, reminds me of my SH101, but with things like the ultrasaw option (which is really fat) and the multimode filter it is a lot more sonically flexible. For me two envelopes is overkill when you only have one osc; one env would be simpler and quicker. This has a reputation for doing distorted gnarly sounds with its metallizer and brute factor knobs, which are not my bag - but it can do smoother, more subtle stuff just as well. To my ears it had a big, round, pleasing sound. Again, incredible for the price. It would be interesting to compare with the Microbrute. - Roland SE-02. Very solid, deep, tight Minimoog type sound. With three oscs, it is incredibly fully featured and flexible. It has lovely touches like you can switch the LFO between one cycle, free running and retriggered at the start of each note - brilliant to have those options. To have something as good as this for the price, and the size, is hard to believe. Plus unlike other Boutiques it has a proper power input barrel connector. The big downside is that the small size and sheer number of features makes it quite fiddly to program. The knobs that act as switches need some force, and gave the feel like they might break with heavy and prolonged use. I think one reason why the JU-06 Boutique was so popular is that is has a small number of controls, so they are not so tightly packed in. - Arp Odyssey. I have never had much interest in this synth. It gets described as an aggressive funk and rock n roll machine, which is not my bag at all. So I only played it because it happened to be on display. But I loved it instantly. It has that magic combination of sounding fantastic and also being immediate and hands on, but with just enough complexity to hold your interest and keep you exploring. I quickly got a lot of awesome dance music sounds out of it, e.g. a big fat square bass like on Everybody In The Place, and also setting the VCOs to an interval like a fifth gave great stabby sounds. This was the synth I kept coming back to.
If you look at 1970's concert footage of bands that used Odysseys, Minimoogs, etc., you will see that most bands had a set of headphones connected to their synth and they would retune it or change pitches between songs while the front man was talking to the audience. Unlike the Odysseys and Pro-Soloists, synth players would frequently have to retune the oscillators on their minimoog even if they didn't change the pitch on an oscillator because Moog synths, unlike ARP synths, had a tendency to drift in and out of tune
I kind of could watch and listen to your reviews all day. Really, you have this downright honest, fun and entertaining style to review synthesizers. All the best to you kind sir!🙏👍❤️
Never mind extra lfo's or better midi implementation, one thing they might have added which is the most crucial innovation in synths, imho, and that's touch-sensitivity.
My reason for choosing the module version of this synthesizer over the keyboard version is not due to the reduced-size keys (I’ve played my microKorg XL for whole gigs). It’s due to having had too many keyboards in the last few years and no modules. In any cause, this is a knockout remake. One of the across-the-board plus sides of this version is that the damage risk of the Odyssey MkIII keyboard is shot to the moon, never to return.
Great review. Loving your little jams at the end of your recent reviews Nick. West country massive. Would have been great with a little bit of Gaz on Theremini too :)
Benedict Johnson yeah I wanted a clean synth-> Scope input without introducing any other processing into the chain. Regarding the difference in wave width, as I couldnt hear it, the pitches are slightly different which is why.
It would have been nice to show and compare the waves pre-and post Drive. The portamento switch changes the transpose behaviour; whether it glides between notes or not on transpose.
Interesting your comment on the sound variations from the Arp and the Korg and also your reference to same units sounding different . My point being that back in the 80's I bought an Octave kitten from Chase in london and on a repair they had a robery and my unit was one that was stolen, So as they were a good bunch of guys 'sikhs if i remember correctly, they replaced my unit BUT it did sound different in quite an obvious way to me. So there not single sound out there. anyway... Have fun .
Again, thanks for a wonderful demo. Look foreward to more. I just ordered a Roland JD-XA and hope you will review it like you did with the JD-Xi. The Odyssey either has a line impedance mismatch or there is excessive capacitance in the audio output of it's preamp circuit. With that scope you could troubleshoot that easily. Need scope probes though.
Thanks for another great review: good to see the build quality of the instrument in close-up, and to get a clear impression of the filter types in particular. I'm starting to get a little bit of monosynth fatigue though: all of these new instruments do pretty much the same thing, and do the analogue synth thing in different ways, but nothing we haven't heard before. Looking forward to the next wave of instruments, which will hopefully add something new. I guess that's what DSI have been attempting with their products, but I'm still waiting for new instruments that are built to last 30 years.
Always nice reviews by Nick! I was wondering, since there is no manual included, and I'm still rather new to analogue hardware synths, is there anybody who can direct me to somewhere where the Trig In / Out Gate In / Out stuff is explained? I know when I connect the Trig In with the Gate Out, suddenly I'm playing legato, but I'd really like to know the possibilities and the science behind this. Thanks in advance :)
Considering it's made in China and the circuit boards are surface mount by machine (no labor) It could of been cheaper. Not everyone plays live, So the case should of been optional. What i didn't like about Korg, MS-20 mini then released a full size kit for almost twice the price, Does the extra VCF chip and a bit more plastic really cost that much. Are they going to do something similar with the Odyssey, Full-size with drive amount control on the back. Some might hold back and wait for the full-size.
The original was the one used in the center solo of Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" (1978), programmed and played by "The Other Joe" Vitale himself... I'll bet Vitale might still have the original, AND this newer version!
Ask'em when where the 2600's at? hehehe Seriously though , it, sounds f'cking great. I can get smashed and play endless riffs from "Suffragette City", "Down In The Park" and any number of Ultravox favs at 4am. Worth it for that alone ! Great review !
Thx for this very good video. U say the Odyssey is too expensive? Do u say also the minimoog model d reisue is too expensive ? I hope! I think think the price for the Arp Odyssey is absolut ok! Imho
Luggage freak? Really? Have you seen "Joe Verses the Volcano"? Anyway, always appreciate a review by a guy who knows his stuff…answers the right questions and doesn't waste your time…unless you're into "unboxing".
If you want to hear original ARP Odyssey in full flight live, please take a try on this. It is old school progressive band but the keyboard player really puts ARP through its paces :) watch?v=gL7AqYop2a4
14:54 Nick's concern about price has apparently been addressed. Currently, some dealers are now offering it as a 'Factory Closeout' with case and accessories for US$625.
Wyatt Worcel was it a revision 2 limited edition? they were selling the black and gold one cheap because nobody was buying them, I haven't seen the orange one cheap that's not a stockbstock or something?
Hi Will, yeah it was the revision 2 limited edition. I purchased it from Kraft Music. I personally don't mind the revision 2 paint job and it was totally worth saving 200.00.
Absolutely right it was Monty! Personally, if there's ever been a better looking synth than the off white face Odyssey, then I don't think I've ever seen it.
Hi Nick, sorry for being a latecomer to this one, but what do you have for reverb on the outtro? If you can remember that would be nice to know. Thanks. Beautiful song.

The Marauder & 5 years later... :)
Analogue, mechanical, will never die. It just works. It got soul.

What reverb did Nick use?
astrophonix Bandcamp info says Eventide H9. Beautiful track!
i love the song at the end. Really great example of the beauty this instrument can deliver!
This end tune is perfect finale for this review. I wish you do that for every future reviews.
What a banger
If that little demo at the end doesn't sell it, nothing will.
GOLD! :)
Nick, I want to echo lots of the comments here - lovely synth piece at the end! Also, thanks so much for your objective reviews. I feel like I truly find out the legit pros and cons of gear when I check out a Sonicstate review. Hugely helpful -- many kudos!
Beautiful closing song. I love the sound of this synth.
So many synths ... so little time :) Excellent review, especially liked the end tune.
to be honest, you can achieve these sounds with an ms20 mini, you could buy a doepfer dark energy and dark time and an arturia micro brute or you could buy a doepfer a100 starter for a bit extra
Jay Owen Yep, probably true .. but for me the Odyssey is a bit of history and magic :)
Yes what a synth
Even though to some it may not initially seem as powerful as others out there (I use the word initially), it's the aura of the unit that is it's allure IMO
I'm waiting for the crazy sounds people will provide from it

Not sold... not sold... not sold.... (Nick outtro jam) SOLD.
YomYestreen agreed! This synth is overall wack
One of my favorite synth reviews ever
Really enjoyed your performance at the end there, Nick. Very nice.
Great review. From the ending track, it sounds like Korg have really nailed the sound.
16:29 - wow! impressed ... 17:17 - goose bumps !!! THATS SO F***IN AMAZING !!!! awesome job - this last part makes me wanna get one now. Fantastic Job Nick !!!!

That's truly impressive Joseph; making an "Odyssey" sound like a viola!
You rock ! Fantastic sound at the end... Simple and emotional :-)
That ending completely sold me I will get one next month .. amazing
The outro tune was beatiful. Great review, thanks
Finally a demo of this from someone who knows how to test out a filter! Mk. 1 sounds awesome to my ears. Really cool that they included all 3.
the build quality is a huge dealbreaker for this price. The slim keys aren't very nice either. very nice review, NICK BATT FOR PRESIDENT!
Build quality is fine. And the carrying case is very nice. Slim keys are not as issue. Use MIDI.
Marcusmiller The build quality feels like a cheap plastic toy.
Bullshit. It's built better than most new roland gear.
James Reeno very true and roland trying to do eurorack is so ridiculous
+James Reeno And its not fuckin GREEN either!
5:20 "Type 2 is the so called 'Moog infringement' filter"
Dear god! I've gone cross-eyed! Arp copied the Moog filter, then years later Korg copied the Arp synth and included the copied Moog filter, and now Behringer have cloned a Korg clone of an Arp copy of Moog filter.
2:20
The lower case is actually from the exact same supplier as the original. Random cool factoid.
Great overview, and the song at the end is absolutely beautiful. Thanks!
I was curious about the bit about the curve on the square wave (at 9:33), so I decided to do some tests of my own. Pro 2, Sub 37, Karp Odyssey & a new Prophet on the horizon! It's been a good year for synthesists!
And Behringer are going to recreate the OBXa! I guess that they knew that the OBX was impossible to revive.
@@MisAnnThorpe Feb '21 - they still haven't. 😎🥰
Seems a little odd there's no midi out, considering Korg claims to have reduced the size in order to make it fit nicer in modern tiny studio setups.
Loved the little ditty at the end. Great job with the review, once again!
Best review yet and lovely tune at the end which shows how musical this bad boy can sound, tbh, most of the sonic demos, korg's official one included, have not done this synth justice..

Outro should really be called Another Green Sonicstate :)
I hear some Ultravox/John Foxx type sounds in those sync sounds.
I went into a music shop yesterday and tried the Korg Arp Odyssey, the Korg Monologue, Arturia Minibrute and Roland SE-02. All sounded great, but the Arp won it for me. Just so you know, sir Batt, I come back to this video for inspiration, as the outro melody is one of the best I have ever heard. Thank you.
Thanks for letting us know!
Same. Back here again after all these years just for the ending song.
Another great review! Thanks, Nick! And lovely outro...
loving the little jams you guys are doing at the end of your reviews

DUDE!!! Like that thing, TOTALLY SHREDS!!!
Thanks for this Nick - great review & BEAUTIFUL sounds! Another track Imna have to buy :-)
That outro song, so I guess it was actually Nick Batt who wrote Another Green World and not Eno. Who'd have thought?
Never mind extra lfo's or better midi implementation, one thing they might have added which is the most crucial innovation in synths, imho, and that's touch-sensitivity.
At last. The signature sounds and more. Fabulous impartial and intelligent as always video Nick. Great synth 👀👍😜
My reason for choosing the module version of this synthesizer over the keyboard version is not due to the reduced-size keys (I’ve played my microKorg XL for whole gigs). It’s due to having had too many keyboards in the last few years and no modules. In any cause, this is a knockout remake.

What patch are u using on the last part of the video
Korg are releasing a full size ARP and Polysix at NAMM 2017
Please help me! Should I buy the ARP or the MS-20 mini?? Is the price difference worth it? I don't know which one to get
Very different sound characters. MS is more agressive, Ody is sweeter.
Javi G Ody can also get pretty aggressive. I'd say the Ody is more verstaile/well rounded
Very musical piece of gear to my ears.
Have you got a recording of that Outro music you made?
Great ending! Lovely
an Owon scope as a "proper legitimate scope"? What universe is this?
Great review. Loving your little jams at the end of your recent reviews Nick. West country massive. Would have been great with a little bit of Gaz on Theremini too :)
Does anyone know of any emulations of this that have the same or close to the same functionality in software format/vst ??
+RellyAlexander He mentions it in the beginning of the video.
Wish we could've heard the oscillascope waveform comparison
Benedict Johnson yeah I wanted a clean synth-> Scope input without introducing any other processing into the chain. Regarding the difference in wave width, as I couldnt hear it, the pitches are slightly different which is why.
I didn't know Nick was a fan of Pulse Width Mod ?
It would have been nice to show and compare the waves pre-and post Drive. The portamento switch changes the transpose behaviour; whether it glides between notes or not on transpose.
Love the outro jam Nick!
Interesting your comment on the sound variations from the Arp and the Korg and also your reference to same units sounding different . It looses ALL bottom end when the resonance comes up.
beautiful jam at the end there nick!
Nick has that angelic melancholically feel on lock
Is the FS any higher quality build? Especially the wobbly plastic faders?
Great review and nice riff at the end there, Nick.
do we know when the module/rack version is coming out?
Vangelis K End of this month or sooner.
Is the XLR output balanced?
Always nice reviews by Nick! I was wondering, since there is no manual included, and I'm still rather new to analogue hardware synths, is there anybody who can direct me to somewhere where the Trig In / Out Gate In / Out stuff is explained? I know when I connect the Trig In with the Gate Out, suddenly I'm playing legato, but I'd really like to know the possibilities and the science behind this. Thanks in advance :)
great review! loving the arp. anyone else having a wobbly octave switch? mine feels as if its build in 2 parts..
Luckily, the auto power off-option can be disabled =)
The original was the one used in the center solo of Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" (1978), programmed and played by "The Other Joe" Vitale himself... I'll bet Vitale might still have the original, AND this newer version!
Dang that end bit came out of nowhere, had so much heart
Dave said "I just want one" he came round the more he played with it.
Outro was just plain beautiful. Wow. (Bought it.)
Ask'em when where the 2600's at? hehehe
Seriously though , it, sounds f'cking great. I can get smashed and play endless riffs from "Suffragette City", "Down In The Park" and any number of Ultravox favs at 4am. Worth it for that alone ! Great review !
very nice sounding filter...
Excellent. I was waiting for this. Sounds great but could be a bit cheaper like you said
I bought my Arp because of you.
Wonderful synthesizer
Thank you
Korg please do the Omni next time! Then the 2600! Then that's it! I'll be happy.
+Devin Tariel 2600 definitely!
$5,099
2600 incoming!
Best review I've seen, beautiful outro music.
The end jam sounds like ISAN, sooo nice!
ARP Odyssey in desktop or rack mount would be cool. They did one for the MS-20.
it happened
I know, it's on my shopping list. Can't wait to get it! KORG seems to be doing everything right lately. :)
Sounds very Celtic and Bagpipes off in the distance would sound Nice !!
Thanks, just bought one! Thumbs up.
Excellent tune at the end man!
If you want to hear original ARP Odyssey in full flight live, please take a try on this. It is old school progressive band but the keyboard player really puts ARP through its paces :) watch?v=gL7AqYop2a4

Nick's concern about price has apparently been addressed. Currently, some dealers are now offering it as a 'Factory Closeout' with case and accessories for US$625.
Just purchased one brand new 599.99 factory close out baby
Wyatt Worcel was it a revision 2 limited edition? they were selling the black and gold one cheap because nobody was buying them, I haven't seen the orange one cheap that's not a stockbstock or something?
Hi Will, yeah it was the revision 2 limited edition. I purchased it from Kraft Music. I personally don't mind the revision 2 paint job and it was totally worth saving 200.00.
Absolutely right it was Monty! Personally, if there's ever been a better looking synth than the off white face Odyssey, then I don't think I've ever seen it.
I wish that Korg would go back to making gear in Japan like they used to make years ago. Not in CHINA!
If you have hit a brick wall with your software based music production.
Bring hardware into the mix.
It basically solves everything.
Still love my Korg Odyssey
Nick: 14:00
Behringer: Hold my bier.
Had no clue that Arp was based out of Lexington... Good to know
+Henry Pestana és tuga?
Hi Nick, sorry for being a latecomer to this one, but what do you have for reverb on the outtro? If you can remember that would be nice to know. Thanks. Beautiful song.
I think it was the internal FX of the Behringer XR-18
@@sonicstate Thank you!
Great review !
But what a shame , no real control data? Even my first novation bass station can send midi control data.
So what??? The originals did not either.
Great review of a fab synth. Only draw back as on the original no centre detent on the coarse tune! Seriously this should have been addressed.
Nick, you should make an album of all these demo tunes you make.Bought your tune at the end.
