The steering box (SB) uses an O-ring seal at its base. If you continue to use the OEM type O-ring seal (standard, Viton or otherwise), the oil within the steering box will (without any doubt) leak out in a relatively short period of time. It's an established perennial problem where the SB OEM (Burman) solution was cheap, expedient but a poor solution. I have experienced this in all my 105 purchases (I currently own four) - as they all came with a dry steering box - which of course doesn't help the SB's durability. In an attempt to halt the oil leakage, I used 140 grade diff oil, however the SB continued to leak - although I suspect the leakage rate may have improved ever so slightly. The recommended upgrade is to fit a modern lip seal as detailed in J. Bronner's Video on the subject matter - and preferably the larger seal that requires a modest amount of machining to the SB - noting that if you adopt the latter, make sure you assign the machining task to a 'trusted' machine shop that will take the time required to do the job correctly - i.e. not the cheapest machine shop. Good luck with the assembly.
I think the needle bearing in the column shroud on my 105 is in bad shape. I get a creaking noise when turning the steering wheel a few mm. I'm planning on getting the steering box out this winter. Is that the only way to access and service that bearing? Great that you keep putting up videos on jobs I'm planning! Thanks for the great info.
Hey, thanks for sharing your story and tuning back into the channel. I think you have to take the steering box out to get the column shaft shroud off that houses the bearing. From what I've read it's a mission to change that bearing. Good luck🤞🏻
You didn't mention the O ring at the base of the SB housing. From experience they are prone to leaking, I trust you've replaced it, have you considered a Vitol rubber version instead of Nitrol rubber? Another mod is to machine that area of the SB and have a convention oil seal fitted. BTW your vids have only come up on my feed today, not sure why your channel has dropped off my YT feed. I've unsubscribed and re subscribed to reset it. Good progress, thanks.
You must Die-Test these things.... mine looked just like this, and had 4 DEEP spider cracks on ALL corners.....Just throwing it out there not trolling as a crack here is catastrophic if it let's go...
@@AlfaAddicts ALL cracks in mine were impossible to see, until you get the die test kit out and spray it down, then VERY obvious signs of all cracking (and it was BAD)...high speeds (not a show car) mean you want a box that is NOT going to fail.... catastrophic accident could ensue

@@AlfaAddicts I better get researching. I don't think you can buy them so it's a refurb or find a decent old one. Cheers and keep on posting the vids.

Yep, absolutely right.
One of the boxes we have recently inspected showed signs of cracking that weren't immediately obvious .
