    My take on this is that the autonomy given to the LGAs will change the status quo, now people that have the ambition to work for their people knowing in mind that no governor can control the funds will do so willingly, and some will be bold enough to challenge the governor when things get out of hand, so to me it is a very welcome development and more boost to the grassroots so that people will challenge themselves to do better.

    Mr Amadi's submission is flawed, please no need for complication and over analysis. What the judgement has simoly and expressly showed is that the LGA chairman will be directly held responsible for how the funds are used. So the influence of the governor is limited in my own opinion. Even if the governor helps you get elected, you will be foolish to submit the LGA funds to him knowing that any problems that comes from the spending will be on your head. What you will have will be conflicts like that of fubara and wike where the LGA chairman will fight back any overbearing attitude from the governor except a governor that wants to be embarrassed. Fubara is fighting wike to allow him do his job, obaseki fought oshiomole, ambode tried but didnt quite succeed etc. The LGA chairmen will start fighting back because (1) they know their status has now been well recognised, (2) they know that they are now being watched closely by the masses, efcc, icpc and the media, (3) thirdly, holding an LGA chairmanship position will now be delicate because they can no longer put the blame on the governors if they fail meaning the have to take all the resposibility etc. The governors know that this judgement has chipped away a large chunk of their influence on the LGAs. So please forget all that governors influence narrative, you will see the revolution unveil before your very eyes. As the AG of the federation said, the LGAs have been emancipated, I agree 100 percent. Any other narrative to the contrary is flawed.

    • @mrmykano412

    • @toinspire9063
      @toinspire9063 18 дней назад

      @mrmykano412 and I am saying that narrative is wrong. Wike help fubara get elected but fubara has turned against him because he fubara will bear the brunt of any misappropriation when the people or efcc or icpc or the media start asking questions so the LGA chairmen now know that. What will happen is that they will start turning against the governors once they get into power. Just watch the revolution unfold before your eyes. The best take away from this supreme Court judgement is that it will strengthen public accountability. People will start calling out their LGA chairmen when they don't feel the impact of governance and funds released to them. The LGA chairmen will not be able to put the blame on the governors any more. Just watch and see

      Allocations for the LGAs are made to the State/LGA joint account for further distribution to the LGAs by the state. The Supreme Court did not alter this constitutional provision. It only said the amounts earmarked for the LGAs must be paid to them by the states as allocated from Abuja. So, the funds will still go through the states. It is just that governors can not touch a penny of it.

  • @babatopeapoeso5788

    What about the legitimacy of the LG? The states INEC or States Electoral Commission are still under the State Governors influence which would still conduct the LG elections nationwide which are always manipulated by the state Governors or the political in power at the state level.
    So indirectly this ruling by the Supreme Court would still not solve the issue with the LG autonomy!
    If Governors and the ruling political parties pick the candidates for LG chairmen, they would be bound to follow the Governors instructions even with respect to finances! So I think the solution is that main INEC at the federal should be conducting LG elections which the state governors will not be able to influence and this means that National Assembly would have to amend the electoral act.
    This also means that we still have a long way to go and this is not the end of this matter so the National Assembly still have big role to play to bring a lasting solution to this LG automomy case
    If not we are still deceiving ourselves and the Supreme Court judgements would more or less won't be effective and will not achieve the intended goals and objectives in the long run
