Philipsen himself said that this is one of the only monuments he can win. I would be surprised if he is a factor in any other classics with MVDP this year. Obviously, MVDP remains a major obstacle for everyone.
@@MB-co6qj Yeah, but he was 46 seconds back on MVDP in that race. That is an A race for MVDP, and I don't think Philipsen believes he can win there. Also, I expect that WVA will be much stronger for Flanders and Roubaix this year, because, unlike last year, his spring campaign is entirely based on those two races.
Pogacar actually surfed the bunch perfectly and found the right wheel to follow. A pure sprinter in Pogacar position could have probably done it. Was a very smart lead-in and excellent sprint, but Jasper is just too fast for him.
Not until the very end. In the last 10-15 minutes, he was mostly off the front trying to follow attacks and win the race, while Philipsen was back in the bunch. Seems likely that the team's plan A was for MVDP to win, and plan B was for MVDP to lead out Philipsen if it came down to a sprint.
@@riderzonthastorm look at the situation at 4:14, you make his case without realising it. On the Poggio van der Poel attacked from the group and chased down Pogacar without a thought about Philipsen. From that situation that was the better decision rather than waiting for someone else to chase and letting the attackers get away.

He looks okay, but WVA is training at altitude right now, and will probably be fresher than MVDP in 2-3 weeks. Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are going to be fun to watch.
idk mvdp just came from altitude and wva had started road a bit ealier, mvdp bit longer break after cross. So imo they should peak at the same time. But as MVDP fan I hope for Flanders, Olympics and LBL somehow. Everything else would be cool but tbh Wva also deserves PR once.
Poggi missed a couple of kicks or even had to brake when Philipsen was moving to the left (only visible in the overhead footage). He might have had a chance to win the sprint otherwise. Not Philipsens fault of course, but just saying. Poggi too much of a gentleman to mention it afterwards, he's enjoying the racing even more than the winning!
Great attempt by Pidcock🇬🇧!!! I thought he might just pull that off!!! Whoever says that was a boring finish is full of it. Philipsen hasn't shown us much yet this year but he was the best man today. Chapeau!! I'm just glad MVDP didn't win. Lets not forget about Pogi tho. He was quite explosive💥 in that one attack and then he was mixing it up in the sprint. The lad never stops amazing us. Maybe he'll deal with the heat better this year. We all know thats his kryptonite. Absolutely great finish!! Major upset for Matthews!! I would rather see Matthews win instead of Philipsen but Philipsen⚡ was the better rider today. Chapeau!! 🤘🏻🇬🇧
Van der Poel is not only an extraordinary cyclist, he is generous in working for his partner. Phillipsen did not spend on the chase. He closed the attacks on the Poggio, going down and the chase on Via Roma. Disappointed in Pedersen on the other hand because his partner did everything. Pogačar very selfish. Extraordinary at almost everything...but he doesn't win in a sprint. He burned all his companions. He would have worked for Wellens.
you can see matthews' sunglasses fall down at the sprint there you've gotta think he had an oh shit moment there for a fraction of a second and that ultimately cost him the win
He was stuck in the 11t sprocket and couldn't accelerate out of the corners. You could see him looking down at his gears as they came over the top of the Poggio, using the front changer to go onto the small ring then back on the big ring in an attempt to 'shock' the rear derailleur into action, but it had presumably gone into crash mode (possibly someone ran into it when they bunched together at the top of the climb).
He was not a domestique. He was away from Philipsen trying to win the race for most of the last 10 minutes. They came together for the final sprint, but even then Philipsen was barely on MVDP's wheel. I'm guessing that the team's goal was for MVDP to win unless it came down to a sprint, in which case he should lead out Philipsen.
