The obsession with the "button nose" is very odd to me as an artist. If you have a very angular face having a little round button nose can look a bit strange. The opposite is also true. As a general rule your natural features all kind of balance themselves out. That's how we get "character faces". When everyone tries to go for the exact same look regardless of natural features, ethnicity etc it all gets a bit strange.

I think many people nowdays believe there's an objective attractive face based on symmetry and golden ratio etc. I feel like recently there's been a transition from "beauty is in the beholders eye" to "Beauty is 100% objective it's all about good genes!". In reality I feel like the answer is not that simple, it's more a mix of those 2 and partly cultural too.. it feels quite objective to view rotten brown teeth as unattractive but as the same time I don't believe this giant lip trend for example is objective. So yeah I feel like one of the reasons why everyone tries to look the same is because they've started to believe that there's some kind of objective measurements that will guarantee to make you attractive. Other than that I think it's also brainwashing from media and bullying.

So a few positive things about big noses:
    - Oftentimes they fit your face really well and make you look MORE attractive than the stereotypical "button nose" would. Maybe I'm in a minority but the Roman/Aquiline or Greek nose often looks really nice to me.
    - They can add a lot of character to your face. When everyone has the same basic facial features it just gets boring.
    - They can make you seem more relatable, confident, and self-assured.
    - They can be an important connection to your family (ie. if you inherited the "family nose" or have a very similar face to a grandparent or great-grandparent)
    - They can be an important connection to your broader roots/ethnicity and be part of your feeling of cultural identity
I know my opinion doesn't really matter at the end of the day, but thought I'd just throw something out there to run counter to a lot of the usual nose talk.

I hated my nose my whole life. I would cry about it. And everyone told me there was nothing wrong with it but it bothered me so much it turned into an obsession. So I ended up getting a rhinoplasty. Now I have a small “scooped” button nose. And after that procedure I became even more insecure about it. To the point that I didn’t leave my house or socialize for 2 years (except for going to work). I ended up being diagnosed with body dysmorphia. Which explains why although everyone tells me they love my nose and a lot of other girls have taken pictures of my nose to show to plastic surgeons as an example of what they might want. But for me, getting a rhinoplasty literally made the symptoms of my dysmorphia become literally unbearable. And a lot of people don’t really talk about that. I wasn’t aware of what body dysmorphia was, and if I knew I had it I probably wouldn’t have gone through with the surgery. Because getting plastic surgery with it makes your symptoms way worse. And that’s why sometimes you see people going down a slippery slope with plastic surgery because of BDD. It wrecked my mental health and I wish we would have more of these conversations about plastic surgery.. cause they don’t always have a happy ending like it’s portrayed in media. And sometimes people get botched too.. that’s a huge risk. I’m not against plastic surgery at all, but the way media portrays it as this cure all. Without talking about all the risks, and the healing process (that takes 2 years until your fully healed). It’s not like you just go in and wake up from surgery looking perfect. There’s so many factors that go into it that we as a society do not talk about.

This is the controversy here. You think your “not so perfect according to the beauty standards” nose is actually makes you look cooler. That’s why you are liking your nose. People who try to have nose jobs are disliking their nose’s effect on their faces. Not all the noses adds the same “unique look” on the faces. We were told, sometimes by family, that we needed to "fix" it so we grew up hating it. We were able to overcome that insecurity and love our nose the way it is. It's not impossible. Obviously people can do whatever they want, but I don't understand your argument here. Beauty standards aren't objective. Blake didn't like her nose because the society which she's a part of clearly finds more "refined" noses more attractive. Society dictating what's beautiful is really the problem.

As an artist, I'm drawn to those features because I feel like it lends the face an air of nobility almost and I enjoy drawing characters with expressions of aloofness and dignity etc. This is to say, I'm annoyed that there's no representation of more aquiline noses in dolls, as if there was then I would absolutely repaint them.

I didn't think I was going to find anything about cosmetic surgery interesting, but subscribing to this channel has been fascinating. I am an AA woman and I have been told since I was a child that I had a big nose by people in my family. I was very insecure about this as I was naturally shy as a child and I didn't want to be singled out in anyway of course. Black people's noses tend to be broader in shape and wide. I also have naturally plump lips, and was told that my lips are too big. LOL! Also, can be seen as a trait of being African-American. I learned how to love myself and realize that no one lives in this skin except for me and I'm not getting work done on my face to look like someone I'm not. Society is really messed up mentally, and I do feel badly for people who buy the delusion of other's beauty standards.

Didn't Michael Jackson's father tell him, as a child, that he had a big nose? That did not end well. The whole Jackson family was unusually good-looking -- until they started having nose jobs. 😣 As for your family teasing you about your nose, look closely and see if you don't find a little bit of envy behind their criticism. It might not be your nose that they envy, but there's a good chance you've got _something_ they envy.

I went to an oral surgeon once for TMD issues. Instead of talking about how I could alleviate the pain associated with the TMD, he started measuring my facial features with a tiny measuring tape and telling me what sort of cosmetic procedures I NEEDED to have done. I was 18 or 19 and was so confused and upset. I'd NEVER had an issue with my face before that and no one had ever told me something was "wrong" with my facial proportions before. I left super dejected and still in great physical pain. That specific point is when I started to HATE my nose. About six years later, I had a nose job.
From what I understand now, the doctor was in a "transitional" period with his practice where he was trying to parlay a career in ripping out wisdom teeth into a "cosmetic boutique" sort of practice.

I think some of the "successful" rhinoplasty surgeries are actually due to the surgeon's ability to create a nose that fits a person's facial features better than their original nose. An individual's looks improve when their facial features are proportional.
One may get a "button" nose, or just a slightly smaller nose. But no matter what the shape of the nose, if it fits in with the other facial features better, then I believe that's why it's more pleasing.
I have a nose with a slight bump at the bridge. It doesn't bother me because my nose fits my face- not too big, not too small. The "bump" is slight, and not very noticeable. If I had gotten my father's nose shape, I'm sure I would have wanted surgery to reduce the size. It looked fine on him. But I believe his type nose would have been a dominant feature on me & would not have looked good. A good "nose job", in my opinion, is one that "fits your face" and therefore it is not obvious that it had been changed.

The only times I have mentioned the bump in my nose, my friends have given me a "what?" look, looked closer at my nose, and said they'd never noticed it.
As I said, my nose is proportional and fits my face, so I've never felt self conscious about the bump. I'm satisfied with it. I would never have rhinoplasty to get rid of the bump, because I would be afraid I'd come out of it looking worse, rather than better!

I had my nose done because I was so self conscious about my face. I never felt feminine enough, and I actually stopped cosplaying because I didn't think I had the "face" (more like nose) for it. I used to get called antisemitic names at school (despite not being Jewish), and often the butt of jokes. One instance that particularly sticks out to me is when I was hanging around with my guy friends and they refereed to a small nose as a "girl nose". I didn't say anything, but the implication was that large or curved noses are manly, or at least non feminine. Even though I've permanently changed my nose, that comment still hurts to this day.
Funnily enough, they all suddenly got flirtly after I changed my nose. I've since stopped talking to them.

@Fruit Basket My nose was healthy and never had been broken before my surgery, so Im not sure if this will be helpful. My rhinoplasty actually went pretty well. It was slow healing around the tip. The only issue was my cast misplaced a few hours after getting home, which made it heal a little wrong. The tip now has a slight (barely noticeable) rightward curve. It's a touch crooked but I think it gives it personality in a world of doll noses.

That is a common misconception in the hands of a great surgeon you won't have any breathing issues, on the other hand, if your doctor is not ENT qualified or not an expert in doing nose jobs you mostly come out with breathing issues. I once saw a youtube video about botched noses where a woman said that her dentist did her nose as well when she went to see him about her teeth. She went on to say he offered her a discount. Is it any wonder her nose came out botched?

Enjoyed the video! I'm not familiar with Stephanie's type of content, so I'll just speak generally: I wish when people discussed rhinoplasty and the pressure of beauty standards surrounding the procedure, that there was more explicit discussion of POC/people with 'ethnic' noses and what different experiences/challenges that come with getting a rhinoplasty. Just to be clear: I know that no matter what your background or how your nose looks, insecurity and beauty pressure will always be a challenge.
I love that you mentioned trying to maintain the natural identity of a patient. Let's be frank: the qualities of the 'ideal nose' in the west (and I'd argue in some parts of East Asia as well), small, upturned, narrow, etc is almost antithetical to characteristics commonly found among the vast types of POC noses. And so when rhinoplasty is brought up, with western beauty standards in place, it usually means adopting a whole new nose that can be drastically different from your origin/ethnicity. I wish when it came to rhinoplasty, there was more emphasis on finding ways to enhance your natural nose/compliment your face that aren't already entrenched in mold of the 'ideal nose'. I'd love to see a video on that, featuring more non-white/POC noses. I noticed in Stephanie's video, a majority of her examples of both no-surgery/post-rhinoplasty noses were from white/Caucasian, which I understand why, but I think it leaves an incomplete picture of rhinoplasty and the issues we have today because of it.

I never was super insecure about my nose until five to three years ago. Rhinoplasty seems so common nowadays, and the normalization of it adds to the pressure of getting it done imo.
Alex'/PrettyPastelPlease's video about her experience really got to me. You usually only see snippets of the healing process, but she very bravely shared a whole lot more about it and how she feels about it. (Mind you, it wasn't only cosemtically, but also to help with her breathing issues.)
There's nothing wrong with getting plastic surgery, but I think we're at a point where it is starting to become an expectation.

I had upper jaw surgery a month ago today, and with this surgery my jaw was pushed forward. Because of this, it altered the look of my nose; it made it appear higher and slightly upturned. I was very content with my nose before the surgery, I thought there could be some changes but all in all I was happy with it. Definitely was not expecting it to change with this surgery but my whole face did. My close friends and family genuinely think I had a rhinoplasty during my jaw surgery! They can’t wrap their heads around the fact that I am happy with my natural nose, and think that I secretly had it done. Most of the women in my family have had their noses done (plus revisions) so it’s surprising to them that I don’t feel the need to alter mine. I also had nasal surgery a few years back to remove polyps and shrink my turbinates and even then, they all thought I was doing the surgery for cosmetic reasons! It’s so crazy how we’ve become so obsessed with the idea of having a perfect nose, that when someone says they feel content with theirs people think they’re really not

Stephanie is one of the first RUclipsrs I've started watching. She's from Australia and there's something so genuine and relatable about her. I've known about her "nose insecurity" for a long, long time.
Mine has been growing through the years, but I'm mature enough, satisfied with myself and enough self-aware that I know I'd change myself too much with just one procedure. I wouldn't look like myself....and I love&like myself.
Also, I have an oblong face and by making my nose smaller, I'd completely disrupt the balance.
We all know how it goes. Someone puts fillers in their lips and now, they stand out too much. So they have to do something else to make it more proportional...and here comes the vicious circle!
People, love yourselves in a different, deeper sense - we'll all grow old, but what's on the inside will stay. Idk if I'm making myself clear...hope I do.
Don't fall for shallowness, work on your inner worth.
Of course, there are some cases that really require surgery, but if someone is thinking that all that's important is on the outside, aka what they look like, they should prepare for some serious "reality check".
Jeez, this is what's called occupational hazard- I cannot stop being a journalist even when commenting on YT video 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm southern european, black, & native and always hated my nose because of the bump in my bridge & how wide it is. Always thought that it was ugly but recently I've actually come to love it. I used to hate smiling/laughing bc the tip would become more pointy in a downwards way and the sides would flare out but I had a friend that I thought was BEAUTIFUL who had a very similar nose to me & ever since I realized all the things I liked about her nose I also had in mine I stopped hating it so much. I also had to remember that being racially creole my ancestors had to endure a lot of really horrible things for me to even exist, so I should be happy with the vessel I ended up in. My nose came from strength and struggle.

Well, this brought back some home truths. I inherited my father's nose, best described as a hook nose. I was okay with the nose until I moved to the U.S. and the kids here started teasing me horrendously. That's when I became self-conscious, embarrassed, etc. In my early 30s, I decided to have a consultation with a plastic surgeon who told me that he could shave down the bone to straighten the nose, but he did not believe in reconstructing noses unless it was necessary. We were on the same page. It turned out exactly as expected. Fast forward approx. 26 years and one day, I wake up and can't smell a thing. I make an appt. with a prominent ENT physician who tells me my nasal passages are very small and am I having trouble breathing. I tell him no, I'm breathing just fine, always have. My problem is that I can't smell anything. He tells me that I'm unable to smell due to my narrow nasal passages and deviated septum. I need surgery to correct this. Surgery is done, and now I can't breathe through my nose and still can't smell. What?! He tells me the swelling will take a few months to go down, and all will be well. Wrong! That was 9 years ago. I've seen 5 ENT physicians since then. The last one was Sept. 2021. She stated that my nasal passages had collapsed, so I could not breathe. The MRI shows no damage to the organ that allows me to smell properly (I can smell slightly - mostly offensive items.) But why I can not smell normally, she does not know and seems to be uninterested in finding out. So here I am now with splints in my nose that are to dissolve within 18 months. By that time, my nasal passages will supposedly stay open. In the meantime, my entire nose is tender to the touch. None of this apparently had anything to do with my original surgery of shaving down the bone a bit and everything to do with a surgery I did not need. The moral to this tale of woe is always get a second opinion for everything.

Doctor, I've seen 3 or 4 of your videos so far and I must say: I'm so happy that you are so healthy and normal in this sick world and especially living in a country such as the US, where there is a public generalized obsession for plastic surgery. In Europe, it's more and more the same, because nowadays people are obsessed with what they want to look like than what they are as persons. They forgot that your life and activities can also change your physionomy. But if you don't enjoy reading, studying, getting wise instead of intelligent, then it just shows on your face, irrespective the number of "repairing" plastic surgeries.

The comments Stephanie Lange is getting about her nose just shows that we are all mentally regressing back to primary school. I don't think there has been a worse time for people needing to tear others down and verbally obliterate them. We live in the No Empathy, No Perspective Taking, All Narcissism, era.

I had dental braces because of a lack of space in my jaw for more than 4 years until I was 14 years old. At first, I was very happy and proud after I got the braces removed. Then, my mom told me, I looked like a rabbit (and had "Chinese eyes" - my mom is a very charming and sensitive person). I was so upset. Eventually, we went to the dentist for a control, he found out, I was not very happy with my teeth anymore, I said something like "they are sticking out", he looked at me, looked at my mom and said "I somehow tried to compensate this nose".
How to destroy the self-confidence of a 16y old girl.
Now almost 33y old, still feel ugly with my droopy eyes, big, hooked nose, forwards pointing, big teeth, small upper lip, fleeing chin. Anyways, it would feel wrong to change anything. When I look in the mirror, I see my dad's and granddad's eyes, my mom's nose, mouth and chin. It would feel wrong to deny who I am and where I come from.

Dentists will often shit on patients confidence and even misinform them to gain customers. Sadly I see this very often. And people go for the procedures because they are 'the authority' when they shoulve fired them immediately and gotten a second opinion.

Here is a new perspective before anyone has surgery:
My brows used to be so heavy, making my eyes very narrow and my nose very wide (for my oval face shape). I used to get bullied at school and in the street constantly.
I chose to pay for other surgery for health reasons, rather than cosmetic surgery.
I’m so glad I did! It turns out I have allergies and food intolerances which make my face puff up but not to a huge degree.
I now avoid dust, gluten and dairy and my face looks so much better ie. it suits my face shape and my features naturally compliment each other!
Honestly, I look like a relative to the old me, it’s such a difference!

The obsession with looks is so absurd and seems to be evil, creating stress and teasing and bullying. I was taught never to tease someone about their looks. God created us how we are suppose to be. Makeup can be taken off daily. Like erasing pencil off paper. But surgery can’t. It changes the piece of art work completely. I’d be so insulted if someone changed my art completely and permanently so it didn’t even look the same.
I personally love Dr Gary’s nose. It makes him…well, him. There’s nothing wrong with Stephanie’s nose!
Maybe if we all just accepted our features we wouldn’t be judging others or feeling so compelled to change our face so much.

Everyone in the US is ending up with the same nose, bossom, teeth etc., making everyone look the same, how incredibly boring.
It must be a bizarre experience for a European like you to be a plastic surgeon in the US in general and in NYC in particular:)
I'm Swedish, my nose is crooked due to being a wild child. I have the money to straighten it and maybe I will but I will never take the bump on it away because when I look at pictures of my father and his mother, I'm so happy to see that we share the same nose, no matter if it's esthetically appealing or not.

I love when people try to point out flaws (according to today’s beauty standards) in plastic surgeon’s faces like, ‘aha! you’re not so perfect yourself!’ when in reality, these surgeons, who spend all day looking at faces and their proportions, know exactly what they have that isn’t considered “beautiful.” the fact that they chose not to undergo surgery themselves tells me that they made peace with their outside appearance (I think most of us struggle with this our whole lives).
