Sir Edward William Elgar, Baronetto, (Broadheath,1857 - Worcester, 1934), è stato un compositore e direttore d'orchestra britannico.
Molte sue opere sono entrate nel repertorio di concerti di musica classica britannica e internazionale. Tra le sue composizioni più note ci sono opere orchestrali tra cui le Variazioni Enigma, le Pomp and Circumstance Marches, i concerti per violino e violoncello e due sinfonie. Ha anche composto opere corali, tra cui Il sogno di Geronte, musica da camera e canzoni. Fu nominato Master of the King's Music nel 1924.
Sebbene Elgar sia spesso considerato un compositore tipicamente inglese, la maggior parte delle sue influenze musicali non provenivano dall'Inghilterra ma dall'Europa continentale. Sposò la figlia di un alto ufficiale dell'esercito britannico. Lei lo ispirò sia musicalmente che socialmente, ma lottò per raggiungere il successo fino a quarant'anni, quando dopo una serie di lavori di moderato successo le sue Variazioni Enigma (1899) diventarono immediatamente popolari in Gran Bretagna e all'estero.

Elgar è stato descritto come il primo compositore a prendere sul serio il grammofono. Tra il 1914 e il 1925 diresse una serie di registrazioni acustiche delle sue opere. L'introduzione del microfono a bobina mobile nel 1923 rese possibile una riproduzione del suono molto più accurata ed Elgar realizzò nuove registrazioni della maggior parte delle sue principali opere orchestrali e di brani tratti da Il sogno di Geronte.
Sir Edward William Elgar, Baronet, (Broadheath,1857 - Worcester,1934), was a British composer and conductor.
Many of his works have entered the concert repertoire of British and international classical music. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, the violin and cello concertos and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Geronte, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Music in 1924.
Elgar's music came, in his later years, to be seen as appealing primarily to British audiences. His stock remained low for a generation after his death. They began to recover significantly in the 1960s, aided by new recordings of his works. Some of his work has been revived internationally in recent years, but his music continues to be performed more in Britain than anywhere else.
Elgar has been described as the first composer to take the gramophone seriously. Between 1914 and 1925 he conducted a series of acoustic recordings of his works. The introduction of the moving-coil microphone in 1923 made much more accurate sound reproduction possible, and Elgar made new recordings of most of his major orchestral works and of pieces from The Dream of Geronte.
Antonio Castagna si è diplomato presso l’IMP “G. Braga” di Teramo e, successivamente, si è perfezionato con il M° Franco Medori e con il M° Carlo Zecchi.
Ha suonato successivamente in ARGENTINA, COREA del SUD, GERMANIA, SVIZZERA, AUSTRIA, USA .
Nel 2001 é stato nuovamente invitato a Salisburgo e nel mese di giugno ha suonato a Parigi, presso l’Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
Ha suonato a Lanciano per la XXX Estate Musicale Frentana e quindi a Basilea per il Consolato Generale d’Italia.
Su invito dell'Istituto Italiano di Cultura, ha suonato in BRASILE, a Rio de Janeiro.
Nel mese di novembre 2010 ha suonato, con il Trio di Teramo, a Filadelfia (USA) nello Haverford College, nella Union League e nel Consolato Generale d’Italia.
E' stato Direttore, dal 1996 al 2012, dell’I.S.S.M “Gaetano BRAGA“ di Teramo. E' stato docente di Pianoforte nei Conservatori di Foggia e di Teramo.

I used to play my violin in a trio with a pianist and cellist friend. For 12 years we met on a weekly basis . With time moving on, things change and people change. The pianist in our trio passed away and my dear cellist friend is ill and moved to another state to be close to her son. This wonderful Salute deAmour music by Edward Elgar was one of the pieces we played a lot and was one of my favorites! I hope to find another pianist and cellist in order to make trio music again and play this wonderful Salut d' Amour.. Thank you Antonio Castagna for your lovely performance of this special music!

The lyrical and sentimental melody of the A section was well brought out with your sensitive touch and control over voicing. I felt a sense of longing and tenderness. Un pezzo del 1888, dallo stile innegabilmente romantico. Entriamo in questa musica come entriamo in una chiesa. Ton interprétation fine et nuancée, véhicule si bien ce "Salut d'Amour", qu'il semble que tu écrives ce message vers une belle ingénue, en utilisant tes mains comme des plumes rédigeant autant de beaux mots.
