K40 upgrade guide - Cohesion3D LaserBoard + Lightburn

  • I purchased my Chinese laser cutter with the underwhelming M2 Nano mainboard. In this video, I install a Cohesion3D LaserBoard controller to use with the software Lightburn. This combination is incredibly powerful and efficient. It makes using the laser a breeze.
My installation was very easy. The documentation matched my setup and the board was plug and play. I introduced my own extra work by electing to relocate the controller location, which involved extending wiring. On a smaller machine like a K40, this wouldn't be necessary and the whole thing would be done in 10 minutes.
When using this board, a g-code only Lightburn license is required. Lightburn has a full featured 30 day trial for you to test the software and make an informed purchase. I highly recommend trialling it out.
In a future video I will showcase the Lightburn camera and give some tips on how to get the best out of this package.

Wow this was an incredibly comprehensive guide, thank you! I've been thinking of getting one of these CO2 laser cutters and this is immensely helpful. I'm surprised this video doesn't have more views. I have a feeling that laser engraving and cutting is going to become as big as 3D printing in the next few years.

you can upgrade without a expensive card, all you need is certain 3d printer cards and the firmware for them, I use a MKS makerbase version 1.3 card and the firmware , it works perfectly, some minor low voltage wiring adjustments and your done. I have had it running for over a year without failing once.

Thanks for another great video Michael! We're a small Aussie manufacturer and we package our products in black EPE foam and currently use a hot wire cutter to get square blocks that are pieced together. It's a bit tedious and we'd prefer to use more complex shapes that our products can fit perfectly into for a more professional look. I heard lasers have issues cutting certain materials. Do you think this laser could cut black packaging foam up to 20mm thick?

Michael - just stop with these good videos, will you? ;-) After I found your videos on 3d printing and saw how easily I could get a really nice setup going, I I ruled out buying a laser for my original projects (due to cost and risks with dodgy Chinese lasers)... Then I spent a week or two watching a ton of videos on your channel and getting immersed in 3d printing. Now you flip over to laser-cutting and make it seem easier (if still somewhat expensive) to go that route! Quit with the temptations, will you? I already have too many projects to finish! :-D

While it's totally worth the cost, a good alternative for cheapskates like myself (or for those who are starting out) is to ditch pirated chinese coreldraw along with usb hardware key and use k40whisperer software, which is free and works on windows and linux. It has its quirks, but is pretty solid overall.

Is there any reason to use this Cohesion3D Laserboard over something more standard for the 3d printers (e.g. BTT SKR Mini E3, MKS robin, etc)
I have a lathe, milling machine and 3d printers that all have different ecosystems and now it looks like I would need a 4th for a laser cutter?
(EDIT I'm sorry I just saw the date on this video. Please disregard above)

Michael, would a SKR V1.3 or a ReArm with RAMPS work with the same version of Smoothieware as the Cohesion3D boards? Both use the LPC1768 main control chip. An SKR V1.3 with 4 TMC2208 drivers is $45.00 with free Prime delivery. Either could get us started while we save up for a Cohesion3d board, if they will work properly.
