LOL

decent is actually a complement for hikaru...xD
hahahahahahha
2029: decenter
Gracious of Magnus to give an honest assessment of Hikaru and the commensurate respect.
I mean what were you expecting...
@@ceoflippers I mean, he likes to tease Hikaru quite often lol
@@musicman1989 true
I don't think it's that gracious. Competitors are forced to honestly assess their opponents. The best competitors know their opponents better than they know themselves.
You don't get to such a level unless you're able to be honest and objective.
I like that in this he addressed what was always Hikaru's biggest weakness as a player, his lack of confidence. And saying that all the online play has improved him in that area is truly a bigger compliment than I think people are going to take it as.
Ikr? He's always second guessing himself, even when he plays the best move he always finds something wrong.
@@davidegallo2185 I do believe it's why he preforms better in shorter time controls. He has less time to think himself out of the correct move that he usually finds very quickly. His change in attitude of caring less has IMO relieved a lot of this in his classical play. Instead of abandoning his instinctual aggressive play for what he considers a safe move he's playing those aggressive and more forcing moves. It's making for much more beautiful games and I'm in for it.
He's more confident because he's making plenty of cash outside of tournaments which takes all the pressure off of him. Other players don't have that luxury.
@@SpyderRacing Like who?
@@Karl_V. Let's see, off the top of my head. MVL, Magnus, Levon, Radjabov. I'm sure there are many more. I think wesley is up there as well.
I must say, Magnus has the most balanced and objective opinions generally. Truly a machine!
All great chess players have balanced opinions, because if they lived in a world of delusion, they'd not be good at chess by proxy.
*Says anything* What a super hero!
@@vidiveniviciDCLXVI there were many many eccentric and very strange chess players to put it mildly
@@dusk5121 In your opinion they were strange, but maybe they was thinking about things in ways you just don't understand.
@@vidiveniviciDCLXVI they were indeed very opinionated though, which is the opposite of objective
At the end of the day, Nakamura used to be over 2800 and world number 2. I truly believe he put to much pressure on himself in the past, and that probably affected his confidence in the sense that he over thought positions.
I think now he is experimenting with new ideas without worrying about whether he wins or not. Just enjoying the ride, as opposed to sweating bullets every single move.
His objective judgement is commendable. He is not insecure to admit that nakamura posed problems for him, very commendable.
Right, because when you’re the greatest at something, complimenting those under you isn’t ever going to hurt.
Very humble of Magnus, because he has a crushing record against Hikaru.
Well... 14 wins and 1 loss, this head to head score in favour of carlsen(in their otb classical clashes till now) also helps him to be not insecure while speaking about hikaru's nice chess performances I guess lol
This is great to hear and see . Much respect for giving him such a well thought out compliment and even expressing that GM Hikaru is a real contender. Much respect to the World Champ for holding the crown graciously
Ok, good to know that Hikaru has the Abil...
better than just "decent"
Compared to Magnus, not in general.
In another 2 years it might improve to "good"
In chess talk, decent means very solid and good
The end of the 2020 Magnus Carlsen Tour was so riveting. It was before the big chess boom, but Hikaru was leading against Magnus the entire finals and then it went down to Armageddon and Magnus won with a fortress. Hikaru is a major threat.
I was also watching it live, great event, one of the best finals ever.
But I’m sure it was after/during the big chess boom right? Or is my sense of time more off than I thought?
it was actually during the *first* big chess boom where chess became one of the popular games on twitch due to xqc/hikarus colalb into pogchamps and many other online creator chess tournaments. in fact iirc this legenedary grandfinal was hikaru's all time highest viewer count. second chess boom is of course the release queen's gambit
@@blackoutgenez Alright, thanks for the information! Got this mixed up. In fact I didn’t even know there where two chess books. I remembered them as one. :)
Yes actually I remember that specific game very well, I was watching the whole event unfold live, and I turned that epic final game into music! 🎶 ruclips.net/video/yyWCao8GSuQ/видео.html
But I agree that this comes across as a very fair and objective view from Magnus. Confidence is so hugely important in many things! :)
What a gentleman champion... Another reason why i like magnus !!!
I LOVE HIM MATE
Used to dislike him for some reason but then I grew older and 180
@@zambot264 I have definitely been on the fence for a while. In official settings, he acts like in this video. However, a lot of the things that he says as friendly dunks to people tend to cut fairly deep, and I have a hard time being able to tell if it's because he has a poor filter for jokes, or because he imposes "boss syndrome" on people, where since he is at the top, he isn't "allowed" to partake in dunking with others.
He takes these events very seriously
Hikaru :"I literally don't care"
Magnus: Yeah, this dude is good
Also Magnus: But nothing I can't solve 😎🤭💎
😆
Dang the man just straightup didn't roast naka, thats a first
For real. I've heard him say something kinda nice before, but it was only one time. Every other time it's a roast.
so he was surprisingly decent
I also think that one many people don’t realize about Hikaru’s streaming career is that he’s playing chess sixty hours a week, every week. I think people still look down on online chess as compared to OTB chess, and there is some justification for that, but I can’t imagine how any Grandmaster could play that many games and not improve.
That was grischuk's point as well. He plays a lot of chess
@@nononsensegames I’m sure he spends plenty of time studying as well, but obviously it’s helping.
I can’t think of any disciple, including chess, in which repeating it thousands of times would not be helpful.
I doubt that amount of chess does much for his chess skills. At that level you need to prepare a lot, which probably takes more time than just playing
yeah... Blitz and bullet because that's what people consume online, there's not much Hikaru can learn or improve from streaming, studying is very different, even Levy admits that it's going to be hard to become a GM as long as he's still streaming.
It at least adds games/positions to the "database" in the back of one's mind perhaps. It's also probably not as mentally tasking as one serious game but I imagine his stamina for chess is going to be up there since he probably plays chess longer on a single stream than a classical game will take. Of course it's still very different.
I love Magnus and Hikaru. This was really nice to hear.
Naka knows how to move the knights 😂🤣😉
I agree totally with Magnus. Nakamura's an outstanding player, but he somehow had problems with self-confidence in the past (even though he was among the top ten players in the world!). Now, online streaming has helped him regain his confidence in a way. No one can doubt Magnus' ability. This is a modest and self-effacing statement by Carlsen, which in a way explains his ability to retain his title over the years. Carlson almost nearly never underestimates his opponents at the board.
I agree with Magnus too. Did you also hear that every time you agree with Magnus publicly your rating Jumps 100 points? It hasn't been working but I'm not giving up.
"He has the abil-"
*- Mognus Karlson*
Who would have thought that Naka is prepared 😱
Once magnus said he won't play next world championship apart from firoujza, hikaru be like my time is on.
I think what he needed was a break and have some fun which is exactly what online chess gave him. Not all players are Magnus who can stomp everyone non stop lol.
No one:
Magnus: Takes one minute to say one sentence
He's playing chess against himself in his head at the same time. lol
@@NeaEmrys Hahah true
Considering how fast hos brain is , he speaks painfully slowly
I Cant find a sentence without 'um' 'uh' from him lol
People say it's because English is not his mother tongue but I've heard him speaking in Norwegian, and even though I don't understand the language at all, he seems to speak in a similar manner.
"Thoughts on Giri?" Video ends.
Good interview, both good guys and heroes in their own right, the respect that was earned was given
Magnus: "looking at you, Hikaru, I'm in the booth Hikaru, ain't in the moo, Hikaru..."
Ecclesiastes 9:11: time and chance happen to everyone...preperation is the key to fighting time and chance. "Let nothing be done rashly and at random" -Marcus Aurelius How well do we prepare?
I can imagine playing 6 hours of any kind of chess 5 days a week for 2 years straight would improve performance
did you mean 29 years?
Not necessarily, if your already on the top of the top.
Don't forget, Hikaru was world №2 at some point, so playing with far weaker oponnents would probably more damage then harm.
Just like when Cristiano Ronaldo would play in the 4th league for some seasons, his abilities would probably decrease because he isn't challenged as he needs to keep his level.
I mean if Hikaru didn't stream the last two years it's not like he wouldn't have played chess. He probably would have played a lot Classical Tournaments against top GMs and spent a lot of time preparing/looking for new lines and ideas.
I think this is why most people didn't expect him to be able to compete and why it was such a shock that he styled on the competition.
He really did that? , wow some dedication right there
speak for yourself, i think i got worse playing every day 😂

That one time Magbus resisted making fun of Hikaru. I’m almost a bit disappointed.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined for not hearing the word "decent".
I am speculating here. But I am pretty sure, that a few years ago Magnus believed that if Nakamura would have put in all the effort, he could become the number two.
:D:D
Naka was the #2 for a while, but didn't make it stick
He did become #2
The classical chess community likes to spread propaganda, for lack of a better word, about Hikaru since he helped spur the whole PogChamps and chess streaming stuff. Which is why they push the fact that he is a "streamer" as a negative. Anyone who believe that crap is ignorant to at least the last 4 or 5 years of the online chess space. Tho Hikaru has been streaming for longer I believe. Don't forget, Magnus plays for Chess24... *Chess24* . You can't believe everything people say, lol.
I'm amazed this wasn't a dis haha. 99% of the time Magnus mentions Hikaru there's a dig in there.

So this is what u meant by decent
2015: decent
2019: still decent
2020: decenter
2021: decentest
2022: decent beast
I hope Naka wins one of the tickets to the candidates and gives it to Ding Liren, who could give Magnus a better challenge than Nakamura himself.
The only problem is we dont know if Naka is allowed to give away his candidates spot if he gets one
Well if naka wins grand prix then obviously it proves that he is in great form in classical too so to give the spot away to ding liren wouldn't be the best decision because who knows if ding doesn't even win the candidates
@@Pizmos He can't do that, and even if he could he wouldn't.
Problem is that Ding has been too inactive to qualify via the FIDE reserve protocol, I believe he has to have had 30 rated chess matches in the past (2?) year, while he only had something like 4. Not sure what the requirements/loopholes are tho, as he may rack up the matches against local FMs in spontaneous tournaments. Hopefully we can see them both make it, as Karjakin probably will be suspended after his recent support for the Ukraine war debacle
that's actually illegal, even if the person he wants to give the spot is competent and it could bring a lot of issues.
When they play?

Magnus Carlsen = 100% Class
Magnus would lowkey be nervous if he had to face Hikaru for the world championship, because of Hikaru’s playstyle and tactical abilities, let alone his gain of confidence which has always been the main factor in most of hikarus L’s vs Magnus

Wouhou new content!
The whole "retired" or "primarily streamer" thing is really dumb. What ON EARTH is everyone talking about? I feel like everyone went absolute crazy repeating that. He was a top 10 player all his life; he played regulary up to 2020 (pretty much like everyone else because of covid. And during pandemic he breathed chess 24/7, safe to say he played more online tournaments than anyone of the elite players); He played THE ENTIRE 2020 WCC qualifyng cycle (World Cup, Grand Prix and Grand Swiss), and he's about to play the Grand Prix for the inmediate next WCC. Everyones acting like he's Kramnik, Ding is more retired than Naka.
I hope ding doesn't retire
@@BloodScarlet Nah, he won't. I hope he's back soon though, this whole thing is taking too long.
I wouldn't say Ding is retired, more like he literally can't get out of China to actually the damn tournaments
@AutoSemiMatic I hear you, but that's just false. Like I said, he played till 2020 (like everyone else), then he kinda stopped (like everyone else), played a lot of online chess (Magnuses tournaments, titled arena, Speed Chess Championships, or just chess.com whole days, you name it, MORE than anyone else). I wouldn't say he's "retired" even if he's playing fall guys 80% of his stream time, then again, his content is at least 80% chess related.
Saying Hikaru is retired cause he streams is as dumb as saying Magnus is retired cause he watch too much soccer and NBA.
@@Isthatthegrimreaper170 I'm not saying it either. i just name him cause even Ding is way more inactive than Naka and people treat Naka like he's an absolute casual.
