  • Magnus Carlsen speaks about Hikaru Nakamura, an American chess grandmaster and Twitch streamer, during his Champions Chess Tour interview clip. One of the best funny moments was when Magnus VS Hikaru and they played the bongcloud chess opening in online blitz speed chess with little calculation, arrows or premoves needed. Magnus talks and gives analysis of their rivalry and possible future playing chess together on the board. For more of the best chess channel on RUclips; subscribe to Magnus Carlsen RUclips channel.

      @@davidegallo2185 I do believe it's why he preforms better in shorter time controls. He has less time to think himself out of the correct move that he usually finds very quickly. His change in attitude of caring less has IMO relieved a lot of this in his classical play. Instead of abandoning his instinctual aggressive play for what he considers a safe move he's playing those aggressive and more forcing moves. At the end of the day, Nakamura used to be over 2800 and world number 2. I truly believe he put to much pressure on himself in the past, and that probably affected his confidence in the sense that he over thought positions.

      yeah... Blitz and bullet because that's what people consume online, there's not much Hikaru can learn or improve from streaming, studying is very different, even Levy admits that it's going to be hard to become a GM as long as he's still streaming.

      It at least adds games/positions to the "database" in the back of one's mind perhaps. It's also probably not as mentally tasking as one serious game but I imagine his stamina for chess is going to be up there since he probably plays chess longer on a single stream than a classical game will take. Of course it's still very different.

    I agree totally with Magnus. Nakamura's an outstanding player, but he somehow had problems with self-confidence in the past (even though he was among the top ten players in the world!). Now, online streaming has helped him regain his confidence in a way. No one can doubt Magnus' ability. This is a modest and self-effacing statement by Carlsen, which in a way explains his ability to retain his title over the years. Carlson almost nearly never underestimates his opponents at the board.

      Not necessarily, if your already on the top of the top.
      Don't forget, Hikaru was world №2 at some point, so playing with far weaker oponnents would probably more damage then harm.
      Just like when Cristiano Ronaldo would play in the 4th league for some seasons, his abilities would probably decrease because he isn't challenged as he needs to keep his level.
      I mean if Hikaru didn't stream the last two years it's not like he wouldn't have played chess. He probably would have played a lot Classical Tournaments against top GMs and spent a lot of time preparing/looking for new lines and ideas.
      I think this is why most people didn't expect him to be able to compete and why it was such a shock that he styled on the competition.

      Problem is that Ding has been too inactive to qualify via the FIDE reserve protocol, I believe he has to have had 30 rated chess matches in the past (2?) year, while he only had something like 4. Not sure what the requirements/loopholes are tho, as he may rack up the matches against local FMs in spontaneous tournaments. Hopefully we can see them both make it, as Karjakin probably will be suspended after his recent support for the Ukraine war debacle

    The whole "retired" or "primarily streamer" thing is really dumb. What ON EARTH is everyone talking about? I feel like everyone went absolute crazy repeating that. He was a top 10 player all his life; he played regulary up to 2020 (pretty much like everyone else because of covid. And during pandemic he breathed chess 24/7, safe to say he played more online tournaments than anyone of the elite players); He played THE ENTIRE 2020 WCC qualifyng cycle (World Cup, Grand Prix and Grand Swiss), and he's about to play the Grand Prix for the inmediate next WCC. Everyones acting like he's Kramnik, Ding is more retired than Naka.

    • @outerdimension7276
      @outerdimension7276 2 года назад +1

      @AutoSemiMatic I hear you, but that's just false. Like I said, he played till 2020 (like everyone else), then he kinda stopped (like everyone else), played a lot of online chess (Magnuses tournaments, titled arena, Speed Chess Championships, or just chess.com whole days, you name it, MORE than anyone else). I wouldn't say he's "retired" even if he's playing fall guys 80% of his stream time, then again, his content is at least 80% chess related.
      Saying Hikaru is retired cause he streams is as dumb as saying Magnus is retired cause he watch too much soccer and NBA.
