To quote the creator in this video: - Don't reward yourself with unhealthy habits. - Don't think Studying is a barrier for fun and comfort (I am so this person) Train your mind and body that, studying is making you a better person and promising better future. So well said Jimmy! Thank you for this wonderful and impactful video.
I'm already a doctor, but still studying for exams since it never ends... (trying for the MCCQE1 this year). I admire the dedication you show. I wish I could have been like this when I was in medical school ;)
Playing videogames in a healthy and proper way, can be a good reward. It works for me. I dont play often or everyday, but everyweek i try to enjoy few hours and destroy everything in Battlefield, CoH2 or even Red Dead R. 2! lol Great video, doc.!
7:13 This is so true, I'm an engineering student but I'm afraid of physics ever since I got bad grades in one of my high school exams and kept thinking I wasn't good at it even though it was just because I didn't prepare enough.
Your channel is hands down my best discovery of 2020. You clearly put a lot of thought and effort into all your videos, providing us with the best content we could ask for. You are so motivating and really pushing me to improve my study habits and overall my lifestyle. Thank you and don’t stop what you’re doing ❤️
After years of working on actual productivity solutions, and watching dozens of videos that unsuccessfully try to help this stuff, I can vouch that this is a genuinely excellent video. There is no magic bullet and this video covers a good range of the solutions.
On your last tip about properly rewarding yourself ... I've been rewarding myself with games and I didn't realize that I was essentially making my brain despise studying and telling me that studying keeps me from having fun. Now that you brought it up - it makes so much sense!! Do you have any suggestions on how I can integrate a proper study/fun balance? I'm kind of lost on how to properly execute this! Love your video :)
Maybe instead of rewarding yourself with being able to play games, you could reward yourself with getting new games? Obviously wouldn't be able to do it every single session (unless you're rich lol) but maybe after reaching a certain goal. Or maybe make the reward something that pairs well with playing games, like a special drink or snack to go with it. Or just switching up the reward every time so it's something new so your brain doesn't associate it with any one specific thing, just that you get some kind of random reward.
Yeah what I find is that you just have to cut back on games regardless. Last month I was pulling 6 hour study days consistently for the entire month up until I resubbed to World of Warcraft. I tried to keep a balance and play 2 hours a day, but I wasn't strong enough I just spiraled out of control now this month I have a very hard time focusing even after I cancelled my sub. Your brain will always choose the fast and easy dopamine, instead of normal. TBF I always had a had time balancing these, so you might be different, but for me it's like training a dog. If you encourage a bad habit once, it will expect it the next time, so you just have to never encourage it.
Goddamit, I’ve had that today, but I couldn’t give up, I just can’t, so I stayed there fighting my weaker self, fighting both the negative feelings and the pressure, eventually I got some goals done, I though it’s just one of them days.
Your videos are seriously helping me through my nursing program. I was so discouraged because I really want to become an NP after my BSN, but I felt overwhelmed! But you’re videos are such a blessing and so on time! Thank you so much! 🖤🖤🖤
HAHAHA there was that sneaky little smile when he said 'glamorous vs unkempt' curve and I feel like he was very proud of that one! Wonderful video, jbtw. I always come back to your channel because I face a lot of these issues and you always manage to give very feasible solutions with reasoning. Thank you for all that you do for the younger demographic of the medical community.
As someone who recently got a job in electrophysiology, there is a lot of pressure to motivate myself to study when away from the hospital. This video and others you made are very helpful because you take the time to explain the details on the how to versus a lot of the other channels don’t explain those important details to take concentrating and efficiently to the next level. You’re helping a lot of people with your videos. Thank you!
You hit every nail on the head in regards to obstacles that I face while trying to study especially with comparing. Thank you so much for uploading these super helpful videos and inspiring other aspiring doctors like me! :)
Like from a perspective of an math student, its a BIG thumbs up. The way you explain and relate to the similar problems i get when studying is just fascinating. The encouragement this vid gave me is not even descirbable. Thanks
The proper study mindset is where im having difficulties. I have fallen down the rabbit hole of self doubt. I can’t seem to pull myself out. You are so on the money on everything you said in the vid!
An Asian who speaks English better than I! Even though I am no longer chronically young I still have a fundamental desire to keep my brain and body young and healthy. This young man knows what he is talking about and today, this morning, he has made me a student again.
you are motivating me so hard rn. i know i have to do these things to study for a long period of time, that led to past success. The difficult thing is realizing you must keep doing these things to have continuous success, when you let go of these habits you also let go of success....
I would also suggest as a tip, buy lined crocs! They are so warm and prevent my whole body from getting cold. My desk is in a basement, it’s cold especially in Canadian winters. The crocs act like a barrier between the cold floor and my body. I used to go numb bc I was freezing, now I wear a sweater and some crocs.
Good advice on always trying to stimulate test conditions as much as you can, especially for those who always have test anxiety. If you do it long enough, the act of taking a test will feel normal, almost like the test day is just another normal day of reading and scribbling things.
Good point! When you finish a hard work, for all the time you were alone, it's now the time to eat all the junk food! It happens to me! Thank you for your advise ;)
Really has motivated me! I have to start studying for NCLEX soon since I am graduating from nursing school, and your videos are just what I needed. Thank you!!!!
I had watched so many videos for stop distractions and pocastinations but your video is something which make me feel very connecting to study and way of your explaining things is just awesome...i really love your videos ...love from india🇮🇳🇮🇳
Thanks for pointing out the importance of the positive mindset in the study. I am procrastinating and watching your videos, because I am currently suffering from the anxiety caused by deadlines from three urgent tasks. I felt I am lazy and slow, but I even didn't have proper rest during the weekend. I am of course not lazy. I am important!!! So many things need my input, and I have been putting much longer working hours than the others in the team. I am the first author of this manuscript, which was earned by my hard work during the whole summer. It is just the last phase of putting pieces together. Just stop procrastinating. Stay tough and I will be stronger 💪
1:52 i wrote a research paper that is similar to this, one of the objectives was how the measure academic anxiety affects or determines the level self-efficacy.
Wow, just found your channel and it was exactly was I was looking for. It is so unique how you incorporate the hygge philosophy and the flow state of mind into studying, and every tip you give is so practical. Going into a research Master's, I was worried about my current productivity and organization level but with these videos, I feel much better prepared. Thank you!
MD just graduated from surgical residency here. No doubt you will make it where you want to go man. I agree with everything you said and learned a few things myself. I don't know if you are now an intern in CT surg, but a video on how to cultivate mindfulness so you can prevent a downward spiral of negative thinking like you mentioned earlier may be a great thing to discuss.
Thank you so much! I’ve been struggling with anxiety and stress before learning that I said one more hour of watching RUclips then I will start. It often ended in me sitting there like 10pm frustrated and with thinking I am stupid and not good enough. I also skipped days at school because I started to late with studying. So thank u for this helpful video I will now try it! 🙏
This video really presented new concepts to me (and I've watched a lot of things related to productivity already). It's clear that you have done this purposefully, with teaching something new as a goal. Thank you for that. I'm subscribing in hope you continue to bring new things to my mind.
Medical student from Dalhousie here. In love with all of your videos, and congratulations on the engagement. Looking forward to the high quality content you've been putting out!
so many good tips. i liked the rewards the best. first time i have heard this and realized something i have done at times when i was really good at something.
This was really helpful - thank you for the tips. I have struggled with self doubt and procrastination this past 18 months trying to move forward with my dissertation. I appreciate the tips. Thank you for all that you do young man, you are an inspiration.
I don’t EVER comment on videos but this is BY FAR the most USEFUL how to focus/ study videos!! Thank you for TRANSPARENCY and TANGIBLE tasks we can do to actually reach our study goals ! Ok, now I’m going to go study fr, haha!
This channel motivates me so much! I just finished my exam week and my grades are better than ever. I followed your tips and advices and I used you as my inspiration and it has been really working for me. Thanks!!
When it comes to "stimulation curve," I find a more emotion focused strategy helpful for getting over procrastination since I consider it to be a maladaptive coping mechanism. Sometimes I follow Viktor Frankl's method of doing tasks that are the most unpleasant - things that cause dread, boredom, fear, anxiety or anger - first. Negative emotions are powerful motivators for seeking out distractions. Making a list and ranking items on it based on gut feeling alone is helpful for overcoming most rationalisations and often relief comes by surprisingly fast because progress towards personal goals feels good.
Self-control app. Me: “RUclips is my greatest distraction!” *locks it. Later: “Wish I could see a video on this topic. I don’t understand the material that well. Curse you self-control! Let me in!” That’s what happens when a website is both a source of great distraction, but also an immense help. By the by, I love your video! Definitely gonna work on implementing some of your tips! :)
I empathize so much. I'm not a study expert, but here's my advice: I know it's not the same, but you could try sites like Khan Academy, Lecturio, or Study.com when you need to research something.
YO this channel!! Tips for years!! I hit a wall studying tonight and randomly came across this channel. So glad I did, I feel more inspired and motivated. Keep posting for us 🤙🏾
Hey Jimmy! Really glad I found your channel. Just started Med school this summer and I’m just learning to adjust. Your videos are really valuable in helping me make sense of it all. Thanks and best of luck! Looking forward to seeing how your career unfolds!
I rarely comment on videos but I just had to in this case because this video is very informative and different. Most types of videos like this always provide the same, repetitive advice, which always puts me off and makes me click away. But this video actually has useful and well thought out tips and I really appreciate it. Thank you so much, I also am very inspired by your study session videos. 💙
The stimulation curve is called the "Yerkes-Dodson Law" and it's a principle in psychology. Essentially the activation system interacts with the limbic system and the neocortex. If you are aroused the right amount however; You're functioning on optimal performance. Not too high, not too low. Another thing: The reward system, as part of the limbic system can actually disrupt the activation system in the brainstem. BUT a reduction in arousal, immediately after a task, results in that task being considered "memorable" by the brain. So if you study, and then reward yourself, arousal will reduce, and as a result you'll remember more of what you've just learned. This mechanism is also part of the basic principle of learning.
Hi Jimmy! What a lucky day for me that RUclips recommends your video! Your advice is really helpful! I am excited to try them and apply it to my studying routine. Thank you for sharing and keep making videos. You got a new subscriber
Hi I'm a Non-US IMG currently preparing for STEP1 and this video was really helpful! thanks for all the insights and advice :)) will definitely use some of them :))
Awesome advice. Never thought how I am programming my brain to think study sessions were a roadblock to the long gaming sessions I used as rewards for being productive.

I have my final exams for my final year next month.. I've been studying since three months now since the quarantine started but I'm not satisfied with my preparation...i no longer remember anything I've studied last month 😅
Just found your channel and I'm in love! Also, I love listening to ambiance and fireplace sounds when I'm studying. I feel like even lofi can sometimes be distracting haha. Great video!
I discovered your channel recently. Thank you so much for all the work you put on your videos! Love your study with me videos, helps me a lot😊 much love from Belgium.
thank you, I've been struggling a lot, and this video showed me so many things, thank you very much. Keep making videos, love them and helps me a lot!!!
This is a great video !!!! Thank you for recommending that self control app, right now i'm studying to learn a new skillset and this will help me eliminate the temptation of going on social media while i'm busy trying to learn. Thanks again
Though I definitely think this is a great video. I do want to point out (as I've have many friends who've gone to medical school) that the motivation from becoming a Dr and making amazing income (top 1%) provided a strong stimulus. The challenges for many students not in medical school or dental school is figuring out what kind of job prospects are available etc. Plus many things people study outside of professional degrees don't have tremendous utility outside of the classroom. That's why I think many people should look a trade school rather than University when determining what career path one should take...unless of course medicine, law, dental, teacher or engineering is what a person wants to become. There's a few others but I'm not sold on the entire concept of going to university. Even though I went to university for 7 years and got a grad degree and have developed a good career... anyways just my 2 cents.
Keep on going with videos like this! Loved it! What about a video about what kind of productive things eg. exercises you are doing in your breaks? Greets from a law student from Germany
When you are so good at procrastinating, you watch videos on how to study
Brandon Evangelista hahaha yes 😂
😂 I swear I just JUST thought like this
Nailed it. I'm an expert at it.
Yuuup
😂😂😂😂😂
To quote the creator in this video:
- Don't reward yourself with unhealthy habits.

“When I take break, I don’t go on social media or RUclips and watch random videos.” Me on my study break watching this RUclips video. Oops. Lol
😂😂😂😂

Me too.. but the moment you start being positive and actually put the work you will realize you can be the first in your class
Good luck 😍

I would love if he did a video on this.
Yes I feel like all I do is study and go to work.
You could reward yourself by buying some stationaries (something you could afford and wouldn't strain your finances.)
Maybe instead of rewarding yourself with being able to play games, you could reward yourself with getting new games? Obviously wouldn't be able to do it every single session (unless you're rich lol) but maybe after reaching a certain goal. Best line: Studying is not a barrier to fun but its making you a better person.
True

About the most non-generic study tips that I’ve seen thus far!! Will refer to this video again later, been hitting a wall lately.

Self-control app.

I love this guy !! Great advice. Unkept for the win 🤓☕️
Thank you for giving valuable tips !
Keep on going with videos like this! Loved it! What about a video about what kind of productive things eg. exercises you are doing in your breaks? Greets from a law student from Germany
Wow this is amazing! Thank you for this❤️
