Retrievers were bred for hunting fowl. They were bred to literally bring prey item (duck) to their owner and not chew on it 💀
I wonder if the dogs themselves have any idea why they're doing it? Like, we as humans can understand how it's an isolated part of their hunting behaviour, and we've selected them so that they only search for, grab and carry prey, but for them it must sometimes feel quite pointless. Yet they keep doing it, because something inside them tells them to.

@@WingyLalka Yeah, I work with dogs, so I know the basics. It's just interesting to think of how they may feel when they do some of the weirder things we've bred them to do. Like does it ever feel just completely pointless to them, even though it gives them a dose of dopamine and maybe rewards from humans 😄 Some dog breeds still have the whole behavioural chains, so they get a natural reward for their hunting efforts. And then there's these others, for example retrievers and herding dogs, that do only parts, which would lead into their death if we weren't feeding them 🤣

Hey, funny story, I actually worked as an animator on Caillou. Someone gifted our supervisor a singing Caillou doll afterward, and he had it strung up in effigy. The hate is real.

My Aussie became best friends with one of our sheep when it was only a couple months old. My Aussie stayed the same size, the sheep, oh boy did she grow to about three times his size. He would herd the rest of the livestock, but let her wander around and do her own thing. And so much licking. She couldn't care less about the random dog following her around.

However, then we got an Irish Setter that had great "birder" instincts. The problem was that she had a tendency to "retrieve" our chickens. She'd come trotting into the yard with a chicken in its mouth and then let it go. She never harmed the chicken and it was fine, if frazzled, afterward. The issue was that it did upset the chicken, and nervous chickens tend not to lay. We finally had to resort to keeping the chickens in a fenced area in order to spare them the stress.

one of my old dogs, a lurcher, once caught a duck when on a walk with my dad. Apparently, she dropped it as soon as he told her to, and it just. Flew away, seemingly unharmed. She hadn't thought ahead and was so amazed she actually caught one that she didn't know what to do except show her dad lol.
What people don't realise is that ducks will kill their young if another animal touches them. Idk why but I think it has to do with protection from diseases or something. There's a big problem where I live cos parents let their kids touch the ducklings which means barely any actually make it to adulthood. Idk if the duck the dog "saved" was old enough to not be killed but I have seen ducklings a bit smaller than it that have been killed by their mother and the other ducks.

This exact same headline and story has cropped up several times over several decades, and a quick google search brings up an article dated from 2011 where it is believed to be a hoax. The 2011 article brings up not only a lack of a verdict for something that allegedly went to court ages ago as per headlines over a decade ago, but the lack of articles written in Germany, and despite the case supposedly being held there.
As a matter of fact, the first appearance of such a headline was allegedly in 1978. As for why? News media do make up things. Companies might pay them to make up a fake, eye catching headline as a way to push demand for their product or services.

The whole scooping up the water thing reminds me of when I was working at dairy queen. The machines started malfunctioning and as a consequence the place started flooding. The mop wasn't picking up the water fast enough so we started using the butler to scoop up the water. The only problem (other than the fact the place was flooding) was that there was an electrical outlet in the middle of the floor that we had to keep surrounding with towels so we wouldn't be electrocuted
If your workplace had any sensible wiring, fuses would blow out first, disconnecting the whole circuit from mains. Source: my flat has been flooded a couple times, outlets were the first to die.
