15:40-Jerry Rice was in and out of the lineup that day due to injury, but he was in on this still fantastic run by Steve Young. Rice's block on Jesse Solomon assured Young's exciting TD.
My coworker sold me season tickets to this game. What a finish! Unfortunately, when we got home, we found out cat suffering from diabetic shock. Long evening at 5he vet on Balboa.
Young’s run changed the whole NFC playoff picture that season and probably a lot of history with it. I think Minnesota would have matched up favorably with the Bengals in the Super Bowl had they gotten there, so it may have taken a title away from the Vikings.
it was a wild year for the 49ers. the young run was one of the NFL's all-time greatest legendary plays. also, the montana to rice touchdown vs the giants earlier that year. '88 was magical for a 49er team that got better as the season went on.
@@Irish-ot3ru I watched this game while away from Minnesota in the San Diego area in the Marines. Such a great game. The real shame is had the Vikings won it, they (or simply beat what would be a 3-13 Packers team the second to last week of the regular season) would have been the number one seed in the NFC at 12-4 or even 13-3 and had home field in the Metrodome which would have been insane with the same Homerdome mania we saw with the Twins in the 87 World Series and would see again in 91. The 87-89 era Vikings had so many chances to obtain greatness but they never could stay consistent. They could beat a great Chicago Bears team (12-4 and winner of the NFC home-field advantage) twice that year and lose twice to a 3 win Packers squad. They almost repeated their 87 playoff win over the Niners in a regular season game and thrash an LA Rams team of equal record to the Niners in the wildcard yet get utterly destroyed by the Niners in the Divisional round. The Vikings let what would be a 6-10 Dolphins team destroy them but beat the Philadelphia Eagles who won the NFC East that year. Still living with heartbreak as a Vikings fan.
As a bears fan I have a certain perspective on both these teams back then. I was fearful of the Vikings like nuclearman coming at Superman with overwhelming force. S. Young - man it drove me nuts couldn’t beat him in his 49er days like how they have yet to beat Brady.
WHOA 1:28 "Runs OVER Ronnie Lott!" Never heard that one before! What kind of revisionist history is THIS?! Seriously though, just goes to really remind you of the reality for a big hit artist, much like the life of a shot blocker, no matter how great you are, eventually every now and then someone IS going to dunk you, or in this case, knock YOU out!
Don't know why he retired at age 27, averaged 4.2 yards per carry for his career and in his last season, perhaps he blew out a knee. I would have liked to see my Vikings experiment with him and maybe use him in a two tight end set (jumbo package) like the Redskins did with Riggins and smashmouth. Finney didn't have much side to side agility, but either did Riggo.
49ers had to go through some tough teams in the NFC during the 80's. The Vikings, Bears, Redskins, and Giants.
The legend of Steve Young was born that day. Go 49ers!

Football in the 80's was just rougher, a real grind...tough men playing a tough game...wow!
Its tough now. The idea that players today dont play a hurt sport is just foolish

Vikings blew it....if not for Young's run.... Vikings are number one seed and San Francisco doesn't make the playoffs
15:25 Why you came here to watch this video
Still chuckle at him almost tripping on the 5 yard line. Epic run.

Rick Finney was a beast. Dude could really lay the wood, that was his defining quality.

Wow. At least a half a dozen missed tackles on 1 play.

49ers swept the Vikings in 1988
John Taylor was a baaaad man #️⃣8️⃣2️⃣
49ers tore up my vikes back then. would of helped if issac holt would of tried #30
Damn, cofer was an awful kicker.
Yep. Not sure why Walsh kept him around as long as he did. Cofer sucked from Day 1 !!!!!!
Wow I forgot what a great game that was.
