The Seattle Monorail is a wonderful piece of history still gliding above the streets of Seattle! This is the first ALWEG Monorail built in the United States!
I am from the DR and next year the construction of the maglev tsb will begin in Santo Domingo, long live German technology and next year the metro and monorail will be inaugurated

That building is the MoPop (Museum of Popular Culture), formerly known as the EMP (Experience Music Project), founded by Microsoft Co-Founder Paul Allen.
Great video. Nicely edited to include all aspects of the journey. I always love riding on it on my previous trips to Seattle and always stay near the Space Needle. Great experience at a cheap price.
I mean, it may be pretty impractical, barely ridden, and only have two stations, but it's still pretty damn cool it exists. Too bad it's being overshadowed by the Link Light Rail project.
They originally wanted five lines as an extension, the first having 17 stations. It wasn't bad thinking it was shitty bureaucracy. This stretch is an icon and something for tourists to get from a downtown shopping center to the Space Needle and Museums.
Built for the Century 21 Exposition (an official World's Fair) in 1962, but never expanded. The ride--all of two minutes long--is still exciting. Now that the regional ORCA card is accepted, I will be using it more once it reopens after the pandemic.
America should have these high speed monorails all over the country in all the cities the same way Eisenhower did with the freeways back in the 1950's. Imagine how many people we can employ building a trans national monorail system. Automation can build these trans national monorail infrastructure a lot faster and more efficiently. Just an idea.
Paul Page I agree that we need high speed transportation, but this Seattle Monorail is not high speed. This is meant for urban metro networks, not long distance intercity travel.
maybe Hyperloop's everywhere will be the next big thing? We really need something. Our roads are way too congested in American cities with the lack of public transport.
The first test track for ALWEG was located in Cologne/Germany in the early 50's until 1967. Nothing remains. It runs just 10 miles from my todays home . ALWEG stands for its inventor "AL-fred WE-nner-G-ren, a businessman from Sweden!
I used to work in what was the WAMU building years ago. Hopping on the Monorail during my lunch break or after work was one of my fav activities. It's too bad it was never extended...
@THE ORIGINAL PROFESSOR CHAOS lol....dude not even close to San Francisco.....that is a bold lie....Seattle is probably the safest big city in the United states....not many homeless people like here in California & other places around the country.....
@Earth+: True .. it used to be .. but now City of Seattle has so many homeless people .. not only that the crime rate is going up too. As a woman I'm afraid to walk alone at night in downtown.
Playing infamous: second son, and came here because I saw how gorgeous the city is. I’m also analyzing this wonder of engineering compared to what we have in Mexico, specifically the new train line in Guadalajara. We will never be at your level, that’s for sure.
Me and my dog went to the Seattle waterfront and walked all around went up to the center and caught the monorail back downtown took a bus home Good vacation
Yes, I love the stainless steel frame and the large windows and the small windows surging up to the ceiling! Very retro-futuristic look! They also look very aerodynamic!
Monorails can be very smooth to kind of bumpy. The smoothest monorails are probably the Walt Disney World monorail, the Tokyo monorail, Tama Japan monorail, and the Daegu, South Korea Monorail. The bumpiest are the Las Vegas monorail and the Sao Paulo Monorail line 15 (both Bombardier), and the Mumbai monorail. The Seattle monorail is in the middle.
ErebosSan yes, you are correct. And it was a bad design choice because a few years ago, two trains tried to occupy the station at the same time and side swiped each other! You can look up pictures of this accident easily. When the monorail was first built, there was a Station by the Westlake Mall, but when a skyscraper was to be built there, they pinched the tracks and put them on the side of the mall.
In this pic you can see the original Downtown station. Where the triangular buildings are is now a highrise office tower and mall and outdoor plaza. To fit the trains into the space, they did pinch the lines together, you can see the ramp extensions that reach out over the inner track to get to the Red train in the video. A inexperienced operator ignored signals to stop and they did crash into each other once. Now there is Active Train Control to avoid another mishap. c4.staticflickr.com/4/3152/3012653535_85e2a0292d_b.jpg
What is it about public transport that is really enjoyable to watch? Lol and to go on. We have the metrolink system where I live in the UK, trams, I always look forward to going on those. And I am a big fan of those personal rapid transport things like the ultra pods at Heathrow airport, I think a big part of why I like these things is ease of use, I'm a wheelchair user and they're relatively easy, compared to a normal bus or taxi, to access.
This looks like an oversized version of the Monorail we have in Hawaii but a lot more stable. Its a people mover inside of a mall complex. It takes people from one side to another. It’s also pretty nerve racking as it sways side to side a lot. I used to like riding it as a child. They still have it but It rarely runs (even before pandemic). There was one day a couple years ago it was used heavily because it was raining really hard outside. But most people would walk or just drive to the other side. The mall also charges 1 dollar to ride it one way. Yeah it’s expensive for such a short ride but I understand because it’s not cheap to maintain it. I have been to Japan 3 times. Merica can’t even hope to compare.
I've ridden that monorail in Hawaii! The Seattle Monorail is actually big enough to be a real city metro train. ruclips.net/video/El7MhtoE7Ws/видео.html My video of the Pearlridge monorail.
I miss living in Seattle. Lived at 9th and Pine! Miss shopping at PCC. Miss the gig speed internet in the Starbucks curtesy of Google. Shot out to Wave G internet company. 👍🏿❤️❤️❤️
Mikey D Seattle almost had it as a reality. The monorail was going to be replaced with a new 14 mile long monorail route, but corruption and politics stopped the project. Now there is light rail, which has had many accidents, crashing into cars and pedestrians along the route.
That's more of a problem with the south seattle / greater seattle area being at-grade. The underground and elevated sections through Seattle through north seattle, downtown, etc are not a problem.
Yes, it was built, along with the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center (U.S. Science Pavillion), Coliseum (WA State Pavillion), etc. for the Century 21 Exposition (1962 World's Fair).

Wow1 This train is beautiful. I love the art deco feel to it. Seattle looks like a stunning looking city as well.
Yes, not a single homeless person can be seen in this video.
True, but if you went to Seattle you`ll see alot homeless living in a tent under the bridge
As a Seattle native I don't ever remember a time I havent riden the monorail. Love my town.
I know it's been 6 years, but, well done. Nicely directed, sequenced. Thanks!
Looks right out of Disney World.
Nice aesthetic with the autumn colors

I would ride the monorail when I was in town from the park. Ride to the Space Needle. I would enjoy my self.Amazed at how close the buildings were.
Seatle seems to be a very beautiful place. I would really like to see it for myself someday
Nice video. This is what the former GDR wanted to build. Now i have it as a very rare and expensive 1:87 scale modeltrain kit.
And the kit is the Einschienenbahn from Piko. Luke, you have a very Dutch name. Are you Dutch, like me?
Love the fall colors included in the scenery. Especially like the shots of the monorail 🚝 entering or exiting the contemporary building. Nice 👍🏻 job!

The Seattle monorail, it's as old as I am. Very novel but also impractical. But still love it.
The elevated type monorail sucks. Suspended type is better.

I'm so honored to be able to even ride that thing, it was really, really cool.
This is such a unique train, I just wish the line was longer!
@@Luke_Starkenburg same maybe extension can be made to south lake union or to 4th Avenue? Just a thought 🤔
@@qyzzi115 I would love that, and a citywide extension was approved years ago, but it never happened. I doubt it will ever be extended.
I mean, it may be pretty impractical, barely ridden, and only have two stations, but it's still pretty damn cool it exists. Too bad it's being overshadowed by the Link Light Rail project.
Two stations, what a waste of money. A good example of bad thinking.
They originally wanted five lines as an extension, the first having 17 stations. It wasn't bad thinking it was shitty bureaucracy. This stretch is an icon and something for tourists to get from a downtown shopping center to the Space Needle and Museums.
light rail is unsustainable for Seattle but they will never build heavy rail. for it to be sustainable they're going to have to build alot more lines
2 station only? WTH is that too wasted isn't it?
Link light rail is more like a “light metro” or “light subway”. When expansions open it will be amazing !
Built for the Century 21 Exposition (an official World's Fair) in 1962, but never expanded. The ride--all of two minutes long--is still exciting. Now that the regional ORCA card is accepted, I will be using it more once it reopens after the pandemic.

Not suitable for big cities. Metro rail/subway is the best option.

Yes, it was built, along with the Space Needle, Pacific Science Center (U.S. Science Pavillion), Coliseum (WA State Pavillion), etc. for the Century 21 Exposition (1962 World's Fair).
Does anyone know why they run the trains on the left side instead of the right? Seems weird that they would do that considering we’re in America.
Oliver's Elevators it’s a system using two tracks but no switches, so the trains just go back and forth on the same track. Half of the time it’s traveling on the left, and half of the time it’s traveling on the right.
