  • My Friend Jason wanted to learn how to fly his new Bushplane. So I took him up to show him a few things before he got with a CFI to start logging hours.
when learning to fly the hardest part is knowing when to flare and how much. In the video, you can see that it is quite tricky to learn.
This shows student pilots or people interested in flying what its like learning how to fly.

Nice job! What finally made sense to me regarding the flare was that it was just to slow down the rate of descent, rather than a 'flare' - somehow that translated better into my head and reduced the incidences of flaring way too much. If the flare is done right, everything after that happens that little bit slower and therefore easier.

This was great, Jonas! Nice job creating another pilot! I don't think I really understood what "coordinated" meant until now. I was learning right along with Jason. Nice work Jason, BTW!! You guys are lucky to live in such an open, beautiful place! What a great place to fly!
I always wanted a slow-flying, fat-tire'ed fixed-wing, but it's impractical for me where I live (Unless I hit the lottery tomorrow, lol). For now the paramotor scratches the itch. Some day I'd love to get a Mosquito or Rotorway heli. Perfect for the tight spaces and lack of runway length around here. You sold me on that S7 though! Looks like a blast!

Explain the wind during taxi and have him look at the flight controls to understand the why. It's tough to learn from the back seat without reference to instruments. Especially when just starting out he doesn't have a real what it looks like when everything is correct and how that feels in the seat when the picture is correct. When he's getting it right have him remember something about that moment and eventually all those moments gel together for a better understanding and repeatable skill. Anyway be careful a competent CFI is a cheap investment. I have taught many and learned a bunch from lots of folks as well. Coordinated flight always....stay far away from stall/spin scenarios. "Stick &Rudder" a great book that's still relevant even in the modern airplane. CFI

You need to slow that thing down on short final and let it settle down, maintaining directional control with the rudder. It should feel like your first dance on prom night! (Shuffling your feet) if you don't keep up on rudder input and speed control your either going to ground loop it or stall/spin in on final.

When I was learning to fly, I had a problem with my landings and couldn’t understand why I occasionally porpoised down the runway. I just needed to learn that I shouldn’t give back (push slightly forward) the yoke. It’s a matter of mind over matter and feel of the planes speed at touchdown. Jason will get it. He’s doing great! With that headset, you can move the boom mike to either side. Just a couple screws.

I want to learn to fly. I’m a partial paraplegic. I can drive a clutch, but I do not know if there’s an airplane that I can fly. I can push the pedals, but I am looking for a plane that has a handbrake versus tow brakes. Any suggestions?

Yes Jonas, would like to see you fly the Avid Flyer. I visited both Avid and Kitfox at Caldwell and Nampa back in ‘91 looking to buy a kit.
    Excellent video by the way.
