The point of this contest was the aerials I believe. There are many other contests of this dance that don't rely on aerials, this one was especially made to showcase fast Lindy Hop and aerials.
This is an homage to Norma Miller, the last dancer from the Swing Age. Lindy hop is defined as “an scrobatic style of swing dancing”. While I agree that some of the dancers rely heavily on overdone aerials and acrobatics and lose the rhythm, that IS what this type of Lindy is supposed to be. Specifically Nils and Bianca definitely fit the “acrobatics” in with the rhythm and have a very nuanced way of moving; they have a musicality I’ve noticed if which none of the others can come close. Showcase is wonderful and I really enjoy the jack n jill ‘un-polished’ dancing but that’s not to say that this is bad, but I agree that some dancers break the rhythm with their unnecessary acrobatics
