- Snowblower Chute cable snapped. Was quoted $55 to $85 + taxes for a replacement. I found this exaggerated, so I set out to see if it can be replaced for less...so besides the time, for less than $10 cdn taxes included,... IT CAN BE DONE..
Update (2020) • Snowblower chute **UPD...
:)
Thanks so much for posting this video. My cable snapped and the dealer wanted $87.23 for a replacement cable. I found your video and completed the repairs for $10.87 all prices are Canadian $ in March of 2022. I didn't need the s-hooks or shackles. I used a small nut and bolt to hold the cable on the shifter ball (Toro blower) and I crimped a loop to the bracket on the chute. I oiled the cable and the plastic tube it goes in. Worked very well and was easy to fix. Thanks again.....Take care, Bluefin.
Thank you, I have already been through two cables and I was fed up with paying for inferior solution.
Almost had a heart attack when I saw the price of a replacement cable which incidentally costs more than life saving heart attack medicine I'm taking..(lol). Mine broke at the z end, so for now, I just used a metal screw to hold it in the hole. I'll probably use your method in the spring. Thanks for sharing.
HAHHAHA...nice one... I plan on putting a very short vid soon showing how things are still working good since this was done (2 yrs ago).. haven't done anything to the cable since :)
Great video , I appreciate you sharing this , I ran into the same problem with finding and then wowed by the price of the cable for my snowblower, thanks again for the idea
Fantastic job! I was going through the same thought process and your video was perfect for what I wanted to do. Many thanks!
Glad that it helps
My Poulan Pro had the chute cable seize up and broke. Husqvarna owns them and no longer has the 6 foot cables that run down the arms, alongside the engine and then up. Instead they sell 3 foot cables that go over the engine like others brands do. I'm having trouble to get the new cables to line up correctly. I think one needs to be slightly longer. I'm thinking of trying this method if I don't get the shorter ones to work, thanks for posting.
Sounds sort of like like what happened to mine. Clean the inside the cable sleeve well with brake cleaner, and/or WD40 (or equivalent) and with, if you have, a stiff wire (like a coat hanger, but thinner) and it should go easy. A lot of crud will probably come out from the sleeve (mine did) so try to do it over rags or somewhere you will not walk on.
Getting ready to do one on a Simplicity if I can....mine is broken at the chute end and I don't see why I can't just shorten it slightly with a mod of some kind. I'll post back if it worked or not. Found them online for mine for around 30+ bucks plush shipping or probably around 45 all said and done for a what I would say is a 10 dollar cable...you are right, rip off for charging what they do for parts and labor.
Hope it works out...Mine broke also at the chute end...My price quotes were for the part only...
On an aside...so far so good...only negative about the rebuild...the anti-seize, when cold, is thick, so the chute is slow to move up, maybe 3 to 5 second delay.....but it does work :) ...grease might work better...
Yeah...simple enough repair..does not justify the cost...on an aside, so far so good...only thing I would change, when it is VERY cold...say -15 celsius, because of the anti-sieze, the chute is SLOW to rise. I think a "lighter" lube (grease) would be better....but all in all...works great...no problems
@@tigger5 yeah the parts market is a rip off machine. If you bought every single part and added it up...the blower would probably cost you 10K. Same with cars..probably about 150K.
a Bicycle repair shop keeps rolls of outer cables and the inner wire in stock.
How is this fix going? Still working OK?
Actually, yes... I recently upped a vid showing all still working... :)
Thanks save me 150 bucks that the dealer wanted to replace the cable
Unbelievable what they charge for some of these parts. Glad you could use the info...
