  • For restorers and repairers of older cars and classics, a 20-acre wrecking yard is a field of dreams. Fletch travels to Flynn's Wrecking Yard in Cooma, NSW - a family business that dates back to 1955 and reported to be the biggest wrecking yard in the southern hemisphere. With 4,000 vehicles spread across the property and a wide choice of makes and models from as far back as 1930.
Wayne tells how his father Flynn began the wrecking business as a sideline while an apprentice motor mechanic in Cooma. Over time he progressively accumulated more and more vehicles before acquiring the 20 acres of land just outside Cooma that is now Flynn's Wrecking Yard.
Today apart from the endless trail of motoring enthusiast restorers and repairers who spend their time combing through the yard, tourists also enjoy the adventure it offers. It's a travel back in time, rediscovering vehicles and great memories of earlier times.
After 75 years as a family business, Wayne says "times up". He is looking to retire and plans to sell the business, hoping to find another like-minded individual or group to take it on into the future. The alternative is the crushers, and that for Wayne is the last resort because once they are gone, they're gone forever. Cooma is a great location to live, and the business attracts purchasers from around Australia and overseas.
There is a story or a soul behind every car in the yard. As Fletch puts it, "they would rather see a tree grow through a vehicle out here than put through the crusher". Wayne credits his wife Vicki for lots of the hard work in keeping the family business going and says, "behind every good man is a great woman."
We wish Wayne and Vicki the best of luck finding a new owner to keep Flynn's Wrecking Yard on the map.
Fletch loves wrecking yards, and Flynn's brings back great memories of the wrecking yards they visited on his US trips, one in particular in Denver, Colorado, and he takes us back there to recount some great memories.
Congratulations, Fletch, on this your 700th episode. Keep them coming.

Well done Fletch and a big thank you to the Flynn family,
real salt of the earth people by the sounds of it.
I hope to get my act together and pay the yard a visit before they sell.
Just as you say Fletch, at some point a very proud and excited man or woman,
put down their hard earned and were handed the keys to these cars,
driving them home to an excited waiting family perhaps?
In this throw away society, we need to take the time to think about this,
    who owned them?
Who put the finishing touches on them as they rolled off the assembly line?
There are many peoples lives attached in some way or another to each and
everyone of these old cars, if only they could talk.
Geez, I am starting to sound like a sixty year old man,

I guess some cars are needed as doner cars for other cars...........but it's depressing seeing all that automotive history deteriorating away on a paddock in the weather when there are people out there capable of restoring many of them.
At the very least, they could be cleaned up and placed into museums for people to view, where they wouldn't be exposed to the elements.
We don't build cars here anymore, so should rebuild what we had.

such a shame i have mental issues that'd stop me getting a huge loan... i'd buy it in a heartbeat, i live only an hour down the road and i've stopped by flynns every time i go to cooma, just to gawk at the beautiful cars over his fence. wrecking yards are literally my favourite place in the whole world and if i had to pick a favorite...? flynns without a doubt. the place is like disneyland to me. well i hope you sell to somebody who lets me in.... lol

  • @gariusjarfar1341

Fletch says hope Flynn will sell it, an idiot if Fletch lets it go. Surly Fletch can see this opportunity. Maybe Fletch is satisfied with his TV sales, however, this property is an opportunity to create a historic car sale yard. Selling fully restored vehicle.

I'm just wondering if that place has been known to have things happen there that can't be explained away cause the reason I ask this is cause where I live it used to be a junk yard like that with lots of old cars & the man that started pulling them in here had just bought himself a wrecker cause a interstate section was coming thru so he would go get all the wrecks & some hid been in bad wrecks where not all survived so I've saw & heard lots of things happen here & I do believe having all those old cars here does have an impact on some of it . My driveway is still gravel & long to get up the hill to my home & lots of people will tell you of hearing alot of times cars coming up & dorrs closing but when you look nobody is ever here .
