'The Prom' follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winnerJames Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

I honestly didn’t know how the American accent would go, but this is better then I expected! I’m also super excited!!!
@@scoutart1508 i wouldn’t mind either but I think it helps make it more conducive to the Broadway show and the characters story (it could still work if he was British but I think part of it is keeping it close to the stage version which I appreciate)

i mean heck yeah! shes had very few big roles (if any in the movie industry), and a movie as big as this with stars like james cordon and meryl streep (and others ofc) she’s going to have a huge boost in her career, as long as she does well in the movie, which from what i’ve seen she’s doing great!

@JMclawman511 The movie has the same choreographer, the same writer, the same team that worked on the broadway. That's what makes the movie so good. Also most of the background dancers in the broadway show were also background dancers in the movie

@@ginandromeda1618 yes the only way for a film adaptation of a Broadway show to worked is to have the original team from the Broadway to worked on the film aswell

Did anyone else cry watching this, or was it just me?! This musical gives me hope for a brighter future. I may not have felt comfortable being myself at my high school prom, but I am so grateful company's like Netflix are putting films and TV show's out there that are promoting change, love and acceptance!

I love this musical (and Andrew Rannells) so I was really looking forward to this film and when I heard that James Corden was going to be in it I was really disappointed but honestly he sounds really great here so I'm looking forward to it again!
I am actually as hyped about Corden as I am about Rannells. I love them both as actors and singers.

Why does everybody dislike the actor of Barry so much? He did great, and Barry is my favorite character.
James is really unpopular because he has a reputation for being very rude IRL & a lot of people are unhappy that a straight man was cast to play a gay man (especially given that 1. It’s harder for LGBT people to get cast in Hollywood and 2. On Broadway the role was traditionally played by gay men). I agree he did a great job though.

I know a lot of folks take issue with James playing a gay guy in this day and age, but I liked his performance. Being bi, I get where y'all are coming from, yet I feel he sold it well. Especially when Barry is talking about when he ran away from home. For a moment, his performance was so strong, you could almost swear he actually talking about himself.
I totally agree, I think he really nailed it, even though there were a few stereotypical moments, in general I thought it was a fairly sensitive performance
@@londongirl2768 I agree. I doubt the things that people took offense to were James idea. I’ve heard people say that the role was written originally as pretty stereotypical, so I don’t find a problem with his performance if it’s how the characters written. Sometimes I think people just look to the actor when they don’t like something instead of realizing there’s a million different minds that go into a movie.
That scene was my favorite, it was like a bucket of cold water because in my experience it's always kids that are required to be forgiving, understanding, and the better person but it's them who are the kid, and I'm just so thankful to everyone that had a part in this for this scene (both in the musical and the film).
@@londongirl2768 The stereotypes are part of the character. That's how he's done in the Broadway version. James actually toned it down a bit.

I read the novelization and it focused a lot of the teen romance the musical focused too much on the broadway adults which I didn’t find as interesting as the teen characters. I hope in the movie we see more of the teens relationship
RIP, it did the opposite. It added more stuff for the Broadway actors and took away some moments between Alyssa and Emma

Word. I think James did phenomenal in his singing and acting performance, specially with the emotional scenes about Barry's past. I really felt it. Perhaps people dislike him because his reputation and his fame of acting in average musicals? Idk, I'm just guessing, I have rewatched it and still don't get what everybody hates about the movie or him.
I'll say though, I'm queer, I get how important representation is, however I don't see why his character was offensive whatsoever, because camp gay IS a thing. And it's Barry, a gay middle-aged actor from Broadway not Barry, a gay podcaster living in SoCal. I honestly don't get what people would expect? I think they're just mad because some get tired of straight actors playing gay characters which is fair and deserves its whole discussion but I don't see as point to hate on the movie, look past that and enjoy the music, the sets and Meryl Streep lol. Besides, I'm pretty sure there was gay people in the writing room who made Barry like that, Ryan Murphy himself is gay so...
All in all, if stereotypes might be an issue then sometimes the problem could be the script, and while I love the Broadway/theater vibe to the movie, the characters weren't quite well adapted as they stayed as theater archetypes, I don't think Corden's character is the only one who suffers from this. Everyone lacks depth and complexity, adapting the script was the real issue not James.
