I’ll never forget this storm. I was 12 at the time. My father was an Ohio state trooper, he was on duty for over a week straight. I stayed with my grandparent’s in the portage lakes area that entire week. I remember the house literally shake with some of the wind gusts. It was a storm of a lifetime. The Acme click store on Manchester Road had a pile of snow at least 20 feet high and probably 75 feet long. It didn’t melt off till May. Thanks for putting this together.
My dad and brother, having owned a 4-wheel-drive vehicle and CB radio, went out and picked up hospital employees and got them to work after the storm hit. All of us Ohioans who were around back then will never forget the blizzard of '78!
I grew up in northwestern Ohio along the Indiana & Michigan borders and was 9 during the blizzard. I recall it pretty well from a kid's perspective and all of us kids in the neighborhood had a ball tunneling from house to house and having massive snow forts across the street from each other to have snowball fights from. Our town was fortunate not to have lost power and most of the neighbors where I was had plenty of canned vegetables stored from our back yard gardens to ensure no one was low on food so everyone could have hot meals to help get through the cold spell. The snow was still piled around for months but as I recall the county had most of the roads clear enough for travel within a couple weeks and in the first week everybody in town with a snowmobile formed teams to get people to the hospital that needed emergency help and arranged food deliveries for anyone in need. It was a great example of neighbors pooling together to help everyone that needed it and was a wonderful lesson on how to treat each other during an emergency.
The late 70s had 3 very bad winters in a row in southern Indiana. In January of '77 we had record cold with temperature in my area falling to 30 below 0 f. In Jan. of '78 was the blizzard and Jan. of '79 one of the worst ice storms the area had ever experienced. The 70s was a great decade in so many ways, except for those miserable Januarys. I was only 3 years old but I remember seeing just the roofs of the car, the giant snow plows that came from Buffalo NY, and my parents pulling me on a sled to the Valueland market down the street. Apparently when they unleashed my brothers and myself outside after a couple days I climbed up a massive snow mound and jumped into a 4-6 foot snow drift, my mom freaked out but found and dug me out 😊
My sister's birthday was that day. The neighbors had trouble coming over to celebrate because they couldn't see our house right next door. No one else could attend the party.
My dad's picture made it in the newspaper, during the blizzard of 78. The article read that a homeless man was out looking for shelter. In reality, he was out to get a case of beer.
I retired from sunny SoCal, moving over 1,000 miles northward to live in the great Pacific Northwest. SW Washington state is wintery enough for me. The winter storms in the Midwest are too much for this old woman!

My dad was a runner in Ohio in the 1960s, I know he had a green shirt with a yellow "Road Runner" on it. He always said that the one important thing when running in cold weather was DON'T STOP. He knew someone who was lost when he stopped to relace his shoes.
I lived through the storm that hit New England in that February. Five feet of snow. digging down to find the car roof. You've been in Salem, Mass John and you know how narrow the old streets are there. City had to use front end loaders to cleat those streets. Good thing because former sister in law was due to have her first child then. A group of us in our twenties used to go out walking when it started snowing back then. We watched the extremely high tide send waves over break water walls and wash OVER parked cars at Salem Willows Park. We had five feet of snow, a week off of work and when it stopped snowing saw so many people just out walking. I saw blue lightening for the first time in my life. Sadly a ship went down in Salem Harbor with all crew lost.
Love this story. I lived through that blizzard in 1978. My husband HAD AN HVAC business and of course was extremely busy. My son who often went with his dad on calls was just a grade school kid at the time. People were so desperate for help with their heating they took instructions from my son over the phone to fix their furnaces!! Was a wild time with all of the snow. I love your shows. I was 11 here in central Ohio and man that was a nasty one, we had a generator running the furnace so the neighbors from both sides were holed up with us it was wild. I’m sure at that age we didn’t understand the severity of that storm, what a Lou Lou
The day the blizzard started my husband suffered a heart attack. Due to the weather no ambulances were available, so we started from our home in Barberton to Wadsworth Rittman Hospital in our 1974 Chevy Vega. We got to the hospital in a little over 45 minuets. Got him admitted and started towards treatment. When I was about to go back home I found my car was frozen to the parking lot. I spent the next 2 days at the hospital until a co-worker of his brought a chain and yanked my car lose from the ice. I slept in the waiting room, ate in the snack bar and showered on the same floor where my husband's room was. I hope I never have to face this kind of weather again in my life. Oh yes my husband recovered and lived until January 1987 when another heart attack took him
We've received several notifications of a winter weather advisory today, so you will not find me jogging outside -but, let's face it, I don't want to jog even when it's 70 and sunny. 😀 I stick to the gym and my stationary bike.
How well I remember. I was at home with 4 kids under the age of 7 while my husband was working as a part time Erie County Deputy Sheriff. We were shocked by a helicopter that he had managed to get landing in our backyard with diapers, milk and other supplies.
My parents sent my brother to school because they had no idea that a blizzard had hit and the schools were closed because back then the schools wouldn't call the parents to let them know that they closed the schools due to bad weather.

No one on the block knew who they were, but they were taking grocery orders and the money to pay for them. They returned after a time, delivering the groceries and change due. God bless those young men! I can't imagine anything like that happening today.
I was 15 here in Akron & man I thought it was the end of the world. I never seen it snow like that. My mom & my sis went to what groceries they could on two sleds while me & my brother stayed to finish digging out. Fisher fazios opened after 3 days or so. Akron police & fire had chains on their tires. You don't see that anymore in Akron.
I was 18 at that time. I got off work as it was starting. I had to be back to work at 3pm the next day. My dad took me to work and I was there for 3 days before we were able to leave. I worked in a hotel and we were packed beyond capacity.
I was 7 living in Michigan. We lived across the street from a park and baseball field. They filled that baseball field with loads and loads of snow. Mountains as high as 25 feet. We had the time of our lives playing on those mountains lol they lasted for weeks!

As a NY resident it's always weird for me to hear talk of 78 when that was just a normal winter for us. Our blizzard was the year before.
