She seemed shocked at how the soldiers were treated in boot camp or that racial slurs were used. These aren't pre-teens at summer camp, they are adults being trained to be Marines. I used the term 'obedient killers' in the same way you described it. They are extremely well trained to follow orders to get the job done. They use their intelligence and decision making to decide how to complete their orders in the best way possible. I used the word 'killers' as that is their main purpose but only to kill the enemy of course. Yes the military can be used in situations to help keep the peace or to deliver needed supplies to areas hit by natural disasters but above all they exist to kill the enemy. That should not ever be forgotten. I have massive respect for everybody who was or still is in the military. I'm sure the vast majority of them do not want to kill anybody and I know a lot of them suffer psychologically from the things they have to do but they do it because it needs to be done.

My dad was a private in the Marines during the Vietnam War and the DI portrayal is accurate he always told me. When he got to be a sergeant himself, he was talking to his platoons the same way. When he got out, the language cleaned up but the attitude was still there. Once a Marine, always a Marine!!
My dad too, 1967. Unfortunately he learned the language and attitude well and raised us kids that way a lot of the time! Hard growing up that way, but I have great respect for him as a Marine, however. Great respect for all Marines, especially from the Vietnam era.

Served in the US Army between 2009-2013, as an officer, and seeing civilians react to training treatment is amusing. Take it from me, if you cannot cut it during basic training, then the life in the field isn't for you. You eventually get used to the insults, and after some time, you're desensitized to crudeness lol.
see for me I am glad I am one of the people that wouldn't be able to serve in the military due to my already present mental health problems with PTSD, depression and anxiety, not to mention adhd and my autism (yes I am sure some people who are autistic could cut it in the military), and it's not that I wouldn't wanna serve I honestly used to want to until I found out they wouldnt take me since my grandmother was a combat nurse in vietnam, I couldn't imagine how I'd do going into basic already having PTSD from years of abuse (physical, verbal and emotional) from my mom, anytime I hear someone yell I immediately wanna flinch cuz I think I'm gonna get hit or I wanna hide to prevent getting the hell beat out of me. I went through Marine Recruit Training on Parris Island in the early 1980s, a few years before that movie was made. My Senior Drill Instructor was just like Gunny Hartmen. Its not a joke. They do that to mentally condition the recruit, to make them mentally hard, get them to think when things are going on around them, to break that shell of civilianhood, help them create a personal awareness.
You didn’t grow up “in the military”, you grew up NEAR it. Soldiers have to be able to look at another human being through a rifle sight and be able to pull the trigger so the guy next to them doesn’t get killed. You have to dehumanize a person to some extent for them to be able to do that. This also makes them a team, they have a common focus. It’s all done for a reason, to keep them alive.
Old comment but yeah pretty much, they could feel comfortable and relaxed but die in a few weeks or months. Or they could feel very uncomfortable and push through it and be able to live 50 more years. It will also be a lot more brutal when those guys go from being relaxed with everyone talking nice to ten people screaming at eachother with explosions going off and seeing chunks of bodies or blood. If they aren't mentally prepared then you will see people completely mentally break and if they survive they will be fucked forever. This gives a chance for mental fortitude training so that they can hopefully stay strong and go home to a normal life after. Being eased into war vs throwing you into the deep end and seeing if you drown.
Tell me you got in the rest of the movie, right? The second half sheds light on the first half... Training through hell, to prepare to survive a worse hell.
Keep this in mind. The harsh treatment is purposeful. 1. The idea that you will improve yourself to earn praise instead of insults. 2. If you can't hack being insulted and slightly roughed up in a stable setting, what is going to happen to you in the field where it is not stable, and how is the enemy going to treat you.
They still curse. 24hours in a day and they spend 18 hours of it on your neck. They don't need to curse. They're masterful at breaking you down without cursing. But they do.
The yelling and screaming is about far more than motivation. Its preparing people for war...for dealing with the worst possible experiences possible. Boot camo breaks everyone down to the same level...nothing, regardless of race, religion, backgroup. It teaches extreme efficiency and coordinated teamwork from step one. Theres no time in war to get your feelings hurt and get offended when bullets are flying and bodies dropping.

Think of it this way. Gunnery Ermey had a few weeks to get these recruits up to a level of training where they didn’t die in the first day in Viet Nam. Drill Instructors had to read reports of the guys they trained, dying over there. So if they felt that a punch in the gut or harsh language might get the recruit to focus and be better, that’s what they would do.
To quote the movie Fury: "Ideals are peaceful. History is violent." Boot camp is the first lesson in making this come to life. Especially during war time.
I didn't go to the Marines but went Army. Treatment was very close to this in my era. They told us that we're never going to forget our Drill Sergeants names and they were correct. After BCT I knew why they did it and never forgot. Imagine what and how the enemies of our country will do to us as Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Seamen if captured? Im a Navy brat and growing up we lived on Navy and Marine bases. I had a lot of friends whos dad was a Marine. And they were JUST like this. But you did respect them and knew they would have their kids' back if a teacher or someone else was being unfair. Marines are very hard but they are also very fair.
Our hardcore warriors need that kind of talking to. It helps to order men into battle so they don't hesitate. The USMC has a phd in how to kill and break things.
You guys have some good conversations regarding what goes in in the clip and both of you make good points. As a Marine (84-90), I can tell you that two of the main reasons the drill instructors speak to the recruits the way they do is 1. Instant response. The goal is to condition the recruit to respond to and obey a command from instantly, without hesitation. Every aspect of boot camp is presented from the point of view of, "what if this situation comes up while you are on the battlefield"? Even a second of hesitation could mean your death and/or your fellow Marine's death. And 2. What if you're captured. From the very beginning of the Marine Corps (the Corps is actually older than our country!), it has been considered the "tip of the spear" of our military. We are almost always the first to go into enemy territory (especially when it comes to ground forces). So that increases the likelyhood of capture. Marine Corps philosophy is to "toughen you up", mentally and physically, in order to increase the likelihood that you'll survive capture. And history has proven that to be true; Marines have statistically been shown to be more likely to live through being a POW.
even back then DI's werent supposed to physically assault you. that being said i know some people trained around that time and they know people who were screwups who did get beaten by their DI's.
It's not about getting angry and taking it out on them. It is about tearing them down to build them up into the model Marine. It is also about preparing to stay focused and accomplish the mission under extreame conditions.
While Hartman was delivering Verbal Abuse, it was abuse with a purpose: Use verbal insults and harsh instruction to challenge their per-established beliefs surrounding their mental psyche, strip them of all pride and confidence and once its achieved, as if they were little more than a stack of legos, help them rebuild a better version of said psyche.
Everyone I know who was in the military says the same thing. Nothing the drill instructor says is personal, every insult they throw at you is meant to test your mental toughness because if some saying a racial slur towards you causes you to break you then you don't have what it takes to serve in combat
Yeah, the whole purpose of basic training is to introduce some controlled stress to a person. If you can't handle this then its not worth the government's time/money to train you any further for the possibility of being in combat.
This is the way they should still train, my Drill was just like this and he weeded out the ones that wouldn't make it. If you grew up in the military it couldn't have been in the ARMY or Marines, cause up to the 90's they still trained this way. This depiction is the closet thing to actual Marine Corps boot camp, (Parris Island, S.C.) I went to Parris Island for boot training in 1963, honorable discharged in 1967. Actual boot camp was a little more intense and rougher than this movie. Sgt. E.R.M.
Yeah you need to make it as stressful as possible so when recruits inevitably end up in a combat situation they are a) desensitized to chaos and b) have been equally abused and have built up a comradery, respect and trust amongst themselves so they can fight in a more effective manner.
Question: Did anyone one of you guy go to any of the US Armed Force Basic Training? Well, nowadays, you MAY not experience the language, but years ago, it was a different story for those who went to basic training. Only difference is the physical touching of Drill Sergeants was kept to a minimum. No punching.

I went to San Diego in 85. 4 DIs and they all yelled at you. They had 12 weeks to get rid of 18 years of bad habits and turn you into a disciplined Marine. Not an easy feat.
When I was in bootcamp we were told that the purpose of recruit training was to train us to survive combat. The purpose of the D.I.s messing with our minds was to make us more mentally tough in the event we ever became a P.O.W. At least that's what they told us.
In Marine Corps boot camp, most platoons have a Senior Drill Instructor and 2 to 3 other DI's of lower rank. The DI is doing everything he/she can to make the recruits not only hate but fear them because it forces the recruits to learn to work together with each other, whether they like each other or not.
Got to make you hard. If you loose your cool from a word then how are you going to react to seeing your friend die? If you can't handle yelling how will you handle gunfire and explosions? Their job is to beat you down and your job is to keep standing. Seems harsh at the time but once you get out you realize it did make you stronger. Insults are just words. Words can't hurt you. Keep your head cool and you always have the advantage in any situation.
In Basic Training of all branches... You need to breakdown the recruits in order to build them back up in the mold that fits the branch. In the Army & Marines, they are front line people that will see a lot of death and destruction. In the Airforce and Navy they are more technical in nature so the breakdown of recruits is different and not as severe. It all serves a purpose. Thanks to the new generations of cry babies we have people coming out of their respective basic trainings not passing their physical fitness training and not liking to be yelled at because it stresses them out and they can't handle it. Thx that's going to protect a nation.

Some of my drill sergeants were Vietnam vets. I didn't appreciate them at all. They can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.
My father was a drill sergeant just like that, his men hated him ,but when they came back from Vietnam they thanked him for teaching them to survive

Agreed.. Plus judging by the Tet offensive base attack we see later, this movie took place during 1968, it was really heating up..If they made a movie like this during this day and age we'll have many weakling not seeing this point..And will probably cancel the shit out of this movie..
Im a Navy brat and growing up we lived on Navy and Marine bases. I had a lot of friends whos dad was a Marine. And they were JUST like this. But you did respect them and knew they would have their kids' back if a teacher or someone else was being unfair. Marines are very hard but they are also very fair.
Our hardcore warriors need that kind of talking to. It helps to order men into battle so they don't hesitate. The USMC has a phd in how to kill and break things.

You guys have some good conversations regarding what goes in in the clip and both of you make good points. As a Marine (84-90), I can tell you that two of the main reasons the drill instructors speak to the recruits the way they do is 1. Instant response. The goal is to condition the recruit to respond to and obey a command from instantly, without hesitation. Every aspect of boot camp is presented from the point of view of, "what if this situation comes up while you are on the battlefield"? Even a second of hesitation could mean your death and/or your fellow Marine's death. And 2. What if you're captured. From the very beginning of the Marine Corps (the Corps is actually older than our country!), it has been considered the "tip of the spear" of our military. We are almost always the first to go into enemy territory (especially when it comes to ground forces). So that increases the likelyhood of capture. Marine Corps philosophy is to "toughen you up", mentally and physically, in order to increase the likelihood that you'll survive capture. And history has proven that to be true; Marines have statistically been shown to be more likely to live through being a POW.

even back then DI's werent supposed to physically assault you. that being said i know some people trained around that time and they know people who were screwups who did get beaten by their DI's.

It's not about getting angry and taking it out on them. It is about tearing them down to build them up into the model Marine. It is also about preparing to stay focused and accomplish the mission under extreame conditions.

Everyone I know who was in the military says the same thing. Nothing the drill instructor says is personal, every insult they throw at you is meant to test your mental toughness because if some saying a racial slur towards you causes you to break you then you don't have what it takes to serve in combat

Yeah, the whole purpose of basic training is to introduce some controlled stress to a person. If you can't handle this then its not worth the government's time/money to train you any further for the possibility of being in combat.

This is the way they should still train, my Drill was just like this and he weeded out the ones that wouldn't make it. If you grew up in the military it couldn't have been in the ARMY or Marines, cause up to the 90's they still trained this way. It became pc and went to shit because everyone suddenly got they feelings hurt. Nothing but pu**ies nowadays.

This depiction is the closet thing to actual Marine Corps boot camp, (Parris Island, S.C.) I went to Parris Island for boot training in 1963, honorable discharged in 1967. Actual boot camp was a little more intense and rougher than this movie. Sgt. E.R.M.
Yeah you need to make it as stressful as possible so when recruits inevitably end up in a combat situation they are a) desensitized to chaos and b) have been equally abused and have built up a comradery, respect and trust amongst themselves so they can fight in a more effective manner.

Question: Did anyone one of you guy go to any of the US Armed Force Basic Training? Well, nowadays, you MAY not experience the language, but years ago, it was a different story for those who went to basic training. Only difference is the physical touching of Drill Sergeants was kept to a minimum. No punching.
I was in Marine boot camp in 1984 MCRD San Diego Cal, and it was exactly like this, except we had 3 drill instructors screaming at us.

They certainly try to break you, but what do you think the enemy will do to you if you’re captured?
The whole purpose of the screaming and yelling is to make the recruits think and make good decisions under extreme stress. This way they can make good decisions during the stress of combat

I went through paris island in 1981 and that is the way the drill instructors were like except for one thing. There were 4 or 5 of them yelling and screaming at us
I went to San Diego in 85. 4 DIs and they all yelled at you. They had 12 weeks to get rid of 18 years of bad habits and turn you into a disciplined Marine. Not an easy feat.

When I was in bootcamp we were told that the purpose of recruit training was to train us to survive combat. The purpose of the D.I.s messing with our minds was to make us more mentally tough in the event we ever became a P.O.W.
At least that's what they told us.
In Marine Corps boot camp, most platoons have a Senior Drill Instructor and 2 to 3 other DI's of lower rank. The DI is doing everything he/she can to make the recruits not only hate but fear them because it forces the recruits to learn to work together with each other, whether they like each other or not.
Break them down and build them back up.

That's the way it was. Went in 68 out of high school.
Got to make you hard. If you loose your cool from a word then how are you going to react to seeing your friend die? If you can't handle yelling how will you handle gunfire and explosions? Their job is to beat you down and your job is to keep standing. Seems harsh at the time but once you get out you realize it did make you stronger. Insults are just words. Words can't hurt you. Keep your head cool and you always have the advantage in any situation.

In Basic Training of all branches... You need to breakdown the recruits in order to build them back up in the mold that fits the branch. In the Army & Marines, they are front line people that will see a lot of death and destruction. In the Airforce and Navy they are more technical in nature so the breakdown of recruits is different and not as severe. It all serves a purpose. Thanks to the new generations of cry babies we have people coming out of their respective basic trainings not passing their physical fitness training and not liking to be yelled at because it stresses them out and they can't handle it. Thx that's going to protect a nation.
It's on purpose, they WANT the nation to crumble, and they know that by using the civilian's best and only real weapon: complaining
