I have a scan of someone in ortho and along the brackets, there is a large opening where data did not capture. Trying to close this hole with the inspector tool as you demonstrate makes the ball turn grey, and nothing happens. Any thoughts on how to actually repair the area?

The whole most likely has in a regular border. You'll need to trim it back a bit more until the margins are smooth.
