Great video and sentiment - I have been playing for 13 years, too. About 8 years ago I picked up a cheap Dixon double kick pedal. I still use the main pedal (in single configuration), despite other drummers saying I should upgrade, I have NEVER found a pedal with the same feel and response as that cheap old Dixon. It just plays exactly how I want it to. Done hundreds of gigs, loads of studio recordings, it's never failed me once.

I picked up a pearl P122 double kick pedal at a used music shop for $50. Since I’m a complete noob I was blaming those shitty pedals for my lack of ability. I’ve only been playing drums for just about a year now, and this vid really helped! I’m no longer eyeballing the same expensive shit everyone else on RUclips is trying to sell, and I’m re motivated to just get the most out of them!

That pedal was actually my main pedal for a few years! Got it for $50 from a local drum shop. I loved how simple it was, and the feel was so neutral compared to every modern bass drum pedal. I find that the action on new pedals is too focused on volume and power, not feel. The spring tension is almost always too high for me at the lowest possible tension. I eventually replaced it with the Sonor Perfect Balance.

It really made me think about what I was playing and I had no choice but to make it work. There wasn't enough room in the venue's 😆 And I loved it! I tried so many basses and i found an LTD (ESP Cheaper series) bass for 600 euros, with a bit of tweaking and adjustement, you could not tell the difference!
I even did a blind test and everyone thought the cheap bass was the Ken Smith!

Right on! I play expensive drums and cymbals because I like the way they sound. Hard to get cheap cymbals to sound good. A little easier to get cheap drums to sound "good" depending on what sound you're going for, but people always make fun of me for my hardware: All Yamaha beginner-level stuff. I've been playing for 26 years now and can still outrun most with my FP710, lol.

100% true. The ONLY reason to spent more than $300 on a pedal is if you find that 'perfect feeling one' and want something that will last a lifetime, or at least comes with a lifetime warranty. Just don't buy the mass produced, super cheap no-brand ones - they wear out super quick and fall apart (learned that lesson more than once). I bought the Yamaha FP9 double pedal (direct drive), they are by far the most expencive pedals I've ever owned. I tried them out on a kit in the music store and loved the feel, so waited and found some second hand for less than $400 in perfect condition.🤘

I finally found my answers regarding those high-end pedals! I've been playing since the beginning on Millennium PD-222 Pedals, but boy - I also have been able to play with them at high tempos and everyone was like - how do you do this? It is about the practice really and no Trick, Axis or Pearl Demon Drive will do the hard work for you. Only you and your feet. Only difference I would say is in fluency of those pedals. When I am using now DW 5000, it feels great and much fluent then the cheap one.
    Nicely said! Bravo, El Estepario!

  • @2ndAveScents

FP9 definitely had way more power and clarity during the double strokes, like a huge difference it’s not even close. If you’re going to play and practice a lot a good direct drive pedal is absolutely worth the investment, especially something as high quality as a Yamaha.

Those old Yamaha pedals, I think that's an FP6110A, are absolutely great. I think you've demonstrated that brilliantly. It's nice if you can afford a fancy pedal with features, great. But the cheap Yamaha you can get on eBay for £30 and is light (great for gigs) and works fine. It's all about the skill.

It's the drummer, not the pedal. However, I do need to say that it's a whole different experience playing a crappy pedal vs playing a good pedal. With a good pedal, you can forget about it and just let your body do it's thing. Bad pedal will make you fight it to gwt what you beed from it. The good thing about everything I said is that those good pedals I'm talking about cost 300-400$ max! So we don't need to sell our kidneys to get one. I've been playing Tama Speed Cobra for years now, and that thing is actually cheap compared to some other high end pedals, but it's an absolute joy to play (I feel that way, you may prefer other pedals).
Great video, message on point! 👏👏👏

Remember kids, it’s not about the gear, it’s about technique, practice and passion. Money won’t buy you speed and control.
But, to be fair, they will help you with ease of setup and continuity. Good pedals last longer.
Btw, Gregg Bissonette proved it by doing a world clinic tour with the cheapest Mapex double pedal. He did all right, but he had to replace them twice with new ones, because they couldn’t stand the prolonged beating
Thank you very much for telling the truth out loud with your actions.

The only expensive pedals that seem worth it are the ACD Unlimited Darwin pedals. Most of the cost id assume is due to the small company/low production number part, but it’s amazing to see how many metal drummers have jumped ship from Axis and Czarcie Kopyto to ACD. They also make some killer upgrades for pedals. I own their Ultimate Driveshaft and it’s a night and day difference from stock.

Some might have some defects of intonation, but I can still make them sound good. I dont play "Extreme music" But I really like them because they feel amazing. the double pedal version runs about $700 USD... and the single(First one I bought) Runs about 370ish USD... I also Play DW drums because I think they sound the best... But like you said thats its all about ME... I spent a little extra to get what I wanted. I was in no way influenced by any other drummer or spokes person. I bought want I bought because I liked it. Also I have used that Yamaha ED9 pedal and its fucking amazing too... It was my second choice.

Loved the video mate! And loved the message also! Got some trick pedals a couple of years back because I wanted long boards and I hated it! Direct drive didn’t feel comfortable to me at all, too light and the response wasn’t good for me.....after a while I switched by to my old iron cobras. I know they too are not shit, but I just like how they feel better!! 💪🏻

Gran parte de problema es el estado del pedal antiguo, un buen mantenimiento una buena aceitada, cambio de rodaje y ese pedal anda para mucho mas! grande crack

Pedal preference is just what makes you, the player, the most comfortable. They can all do the same thing once adjusted but different pedals can provide a different feel. If the coach is shit, the most talented players still won't win. Great video. How about a System of a Down cover of Question next

perfect lesson - a beginner will play like a beginner, whether he's got a $100 marketplace kit or a $10k dream kit. this applies to for almost everything.

Decent gear makes it easier to learn, but it´s very much a diminishing returns situation.

I have the fp9 double drive and it's like butter. I actually have to start from scratch with my left foot because of the massive weight difference from my old dw7000s

I speak Español pero los subtitles en English de verdad add some valor añadido to the Estepario Siberiano RUclips Experience! This was definitely one of your funniest videos!
