Lavan Island, with an area of ​​78 square kilometers, is now one of the most important oil export terminals in Iran. Lavan is located between the port of Maqam, the island of Shidor (Maru) and the coast of Nakhiloh in the waters of the Persian Gulf. Lavan is 117 km away from Assaluyeh port and 147 km away from Lengeh port. In the past, Lavan Island was known as Sheikh Shoaib. But in 1959, with the proposal of the National Iranian Oil Company and the approval of the Ministry of Interior, it was renamed Lavan. Lavan means the agent of dividing the water of the aqueduct. There is a limited area for tourists in Lavan, and this small area is especially popular among tourists.

استان هرمزگان در جنوب ایران با مساحتی بیش از ۶۸ هزار کیلومتر مربع، در گستره‌ طولی بیش از ۹۰۰ کیلومتر در مجاورت خلیج‌فارس و دریای عمان واقع شده است. امتداد رشته کوه‌های زاگرس در این استان، همراه با کاهش ارتفاع و رسیدن به زمین‌های پست ساحلی، در نهایت به دریا پیوند می‌خورد. تلاقی کوه و دریا در نقاطی از این استان طبیعتی خارق العاده خلق کرده است. استقرار این استان در منطقه‌ اقلیمی فوق حاره‌ای، آب و هوایی گرم و خشک برای این استان رقم زده است.
هرمزگان ۱۴ جزیره‌ کوچک و بزرگ دارد. جزیره لاوان، سومین جزیره‌ بزرگ استان، از دیدنی‌ترین جاذبه های گردشگری هرمزگان است. امروزه لاوان نه‌تنها مقصد گردشگران بی‌شماری است که برای لذت بردن از طبیعت بکر این جزیره مشتاق هستند، بلکه تبدیل به قطب اقتصاد نفتی ایران شده است.
لاوان جزیره‌ای به مساحت ۸۱ کیلومتر مربع، با جمعیت تقریبی ۲۰۰۰ نفر است. این جزیره سومین جزیره‌ بزرگ استان هرمزگان، پس از قشم و کیش محسوب می‌شود. لاوان بین بندر مقام، جزیره‌ شیدور (مارو) و ساحل نخیلوه در آب‌های خلیج فارس قرار دارد. (مشاهده روی نقشه)
فاصله‌ لاوان از بندر عسلویه ۱۱۷ کیلومتر و از بندر‌لنگه ۱۴۷ کیلومتر است. از روستاهای مسکونی لاوان می‌توان لاز، لازه و کفیله را نام برد.
در گذشته جزیره‌ لاوان با نام شیخ شعیب شناخته می‌شد؛ اما در سال ۱۳۳۷ و با پیشنهاد شرکت ملی نفت ایران و موافقت وزارت کشور به لاوان تغییر نام داد. لاوان به معنی مامور تقسیم آب قنات است؛ اما ریشه‌ کلمه عربی‌ است و از دو قسمت لاو (سفید) و وان (نگهبان و محافظ) تشکیل شده است. در میان اعراب لاوان، به‌عنوان نامی پسرانه استفاده می‌شود.
