    Thanks for covering this Olly even if it is "outside" of the type of books this channel usually covers. Sounds like an interesting read.

    I've been afraid this scenario was coming since privatization kicked in, along with Thatcher and Reaganomics.
    Everybody - including corporations - should pay reasonable taxes. End of comment.

    Thanks for the review. It does sound a bit like a thriller. I just looked up the audiobook and Stevenson narrates which is always interesting when an author wades in.

    Poverty by America is very good. Living in the US is frustrating bc there is a tremendous amount of wealth that we know we can house everyone, treat or heal everyone, and educate everyone well. But we don’t. And that’s a choice politicians have made. It’s embarrassing quite frankly.

    • @matthewdante2809
      @matthewdante2809 6 месяцев назад

      It’s also a system that allows people to work and advance and make something out of yourself.

      @@matthewdante2809 not anymore. Our banking in interest has gone down to about 2% from 10% in the 70s and 80s. Conversely, mortgage interests have continually grown as well as the prices of houses. Once upon a time you could buy a house with one blue collar income. Now, young couples who both work cannot afford one. That intrinsically makes wealthy people (those who can house themselves and have a second house they can rent) wealthier with yet another income because that couple must rent for a longer time bf the can save up for a down payment of their own. Banks are killing the American economy. Corporate greed is killing the middle class, and they are the ones that pay the lion’s share of taxes bc the rich have loopholes and tax havens in off shore accounts, while the poor don’t make enough to keep the country going with the taxes they pay. We’re getting squeezed from all sides. Now with the abortion rights being stripped, the poor again will be burdened economically while others who can afford to, will simply travel out of state. No one can advance at $15/hr. And most states’ min wages are at about $7 USD.

    Gary is clearly a psychopath but sometimes people like that being on the right side will fight more effectively and viciously for what they believe in. How far did you get in the book before you realised? It took me until I realised he literally continued to live as normal barely contributing at his parents house even when he'd made 50k in that year.
    He showed zero empathy, insight and a cold logical manipulative way of acting throughout most of the book. He's incredibly driven only by one thing, the chip on his shoulder and pretending he's a robin hood because he's a working class boy taking from the rich because he's smarter. Didn't care about money, fun, or people but had an extreme sense of possessiveness over his money regardless. No loyalty or care for others either.
    JB thinks they're mates and Gary refuses to help him, stand up for him and shows absolutely no remorse for doing a bad trade when JB was already struggling, despite knowing JB would have done him right, and having been given help, chances and constant support by JB. Then JB even after all that stands up for Gary when Gary is mad at the broker who mocked him, and then is vicious to Harry about it, and incredibly selfish, although Harry was immature, he was treated like an annoyance by Gary
    Also literally talks about deliberately mirroring others to imitate the reaction he needed to show to get the information/reaction he needed and being constantly hyper vigilant and analyzing others to manipulate

      Ha! You make a strong case for it. I read it more as a young guy completely lost in a world that was alien to him in a lot of ways.

      @@CriminOllyBlog It's definitely quite obvious he has an offputting distance between himself and all other people, especially his family and friends. He says he liked them, but never once does anything in the whole book which indicates he loves anyone
