My signature scent in the 80s with many good memories. But I was in my twenties, the scent was some kind of statement for those in "Team Lagerfeld", a heavy boozy, sweet scent. Both concentrations were insane, but remember: Nearly everyone smoked in the 80 s. No chance for weak scents.
True fragrance's in de 80's where power houses because it needed to cut through smoke and other perfumes. I absolutely love this Chanel. Smell's very good. I heard the first formulation was better more spicy. This formulation is more fresh. The old Chanel egoïst smelled very good. the New formulation smell's disgusting. And the lagerfeld one do you know the name of that fragrance?
And don’t forget Chanel is a French house and Frenchmen were (are?) notorious for showering only once a week! Need something strong to mask that body odour.
I like the cut of your jib! I have an ‘86 Kouros and love it!! I’d also add vintage formulations of Fahrenheit and of Halston Z14 (this was not always a drug store cheapie!!) to your list.
I was fighting back tears when I first saw this review. Antaeus is one of my favorite fragrances, I use it when I want to make a statement, dressed all in black. Destroys many EDPs and parfums in my collection in terms of longevity. MUCHAS GRACIAS, SEÑOR HUGHES!!
First sampled this in store months ago and I was so surprised that I liked it. Didn’t pull the trigger then because I was eyeing other perfumes. Going to get myself a bottle tomorrow at the Chanel store to signify a new beginning for myself - had a traumatic breakup 3 weeks ago. Thanks so much for this review Aaron.
@@daragh9472 Thanks bro, I'm doing much better today, just had the most peaceful day after months of turmoil. Also wore Antaeus out today, the dry down is so good. 🙂
The only bottle of Antaeus I have ever owned I purchased about two years ago. It was used but basically a full bottle and unbeknownst to me it dates to the early 80s possibly first year. Now I knew the scent from the 80s as I started the decade becoming a teenager. At that time it smelled like it was a cologne for my Father but not me! I found scents like Pierre Cardin or Grey Flannel, Calvin, Polo, Matchabelli for Men, etc. to be the colognes I had my eyes on. I can say with certainty that Antaeus is a love and just wish I had given it a chance way sooner. I have no clue as to what the later formulations did to it but I have no desire to find out! Surely the aroma chemicals Terrence mentioned are not found in the original formulation, as I would think naturals would have been used. It is the very definition of "powerhouse". The drydown is truly on another level 😍.
Yay! I’ve been waiting for this review for so long. I’m 21 and this is one of my favourite fragrances. It doesn’t last very long for me but I have very fair skin.
Thanks for your insight about Antaeus. I loved this growing up in the 80/90’s and I came across my original 50ml aftershave splash bottle and it hadn’t lost any of its original scent. I just had to buy the EDT recently for old times sake and oh my God it takes me back! Definitely for the mature guy now but at the time this was fairly typical designer stuff. Love your reviews and please keep them coming.
Great review. This has been my signature scent for the past 11 years, every time I smell it it makes me intensely happy to the core. Still looking to get my hands on a vintage bottle or tester, many say it has been neutered over the years. Like you smelled and analyzed both Kouros'.
@@JJToyo To be honest I don't categorize my scents on time of year. I wear what I like, when I want. It really hit a lot of the right feels with me. But if your skin temperature is on the cold side I'd avoid it on hot days. Or just tone it down on the sprays. That said, Antaeus is a more refined and modernized scent nowadays. It opens more citric and dries down in a more creamy woody scent on my skin (my skin devours typically powerhouse scents). I'd say it's soothing and masculine, but never offensive with that signature Chanel touch. @@Xearin thanks for this. Your point about the “Chanel touch” accords with what I've experienced with many of their scents. I'm planning of getting a 50 ml huge projection and longevity from this 80s powerhouse which to me doesn't smell dated at all, leather, coriander, lemony and sort of civet animalic kind like Kouros they were launched same year I think back in 1981...
Thanks for your review, definitely a classic and a top example of an 80s masculine perfume. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Amouage Opus I, been trying to decipher it and reconstruct but failed so far lol. Cheers!
I came very late to fragrances... it's taken me 4 years and a ton of samples to develop a slight 'nose'.- I've started to realise how samey the trendy fragrances are, and how overtly sweet. Now that I understand a bit better, I find myself drawn to classics for the mature wearer. I don't want to be 'mutton'- or try-hard. I'm in my early 60s and want to own it without compromising my individualistic style. I want arty, but masculine. I didn't 'get' Antaeus on first wears, 2 years ago. I love the smell of my little Antaeus cloud. I think it's weak compared to what I had 2 years ago though tbh, so I have to use 4x as much now
This is one of my lifetime favourites. Antaeus was reformulated several times. The vintage versions (through the 80s) were incredible. 90's reformulations weren't that bad, either. That initial beeswax accord which dries down to a fantastic leather and sandalwood is what really stands out for me, but there are so many notes in this composition and they all intersect brilliantly. Modern Antaeus is not bad but I do hope you get to enjoy some of the vintage. It ages well in those black, high quality Chanel bottles. Excellent review!
How does this compare to Kouros with regards to the Masculine powerhouse vibe it gives off? Both are from the same era , Kouros is masculine, animalic and aldehyde to my nose.
Very much a powerhouse fragrance like Kouros but, more like, Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme, Bogart Furyo though, its dialed back, dulled and "safe" like all Chanel fragrances.
I find this much more wearable than Korous. Once it has dried down the silage is clean and barbershoppy. Closer to the skin it remains dark, intense, leathery and a hint of sweetness.
My grandfather and dad wore this a lot, and I also like it, but definetly wouldn't wear it iam 27 now and more into oriental stuff and sweater like you. But maybe in 20 years :D
Always informative, bro. I've been into the classic fougeres here lately so would love to get my nose on this one. Keep the 🔥 content coming. Thanks a bunch from good ole sunny south Florida
Is there a similar scent that's better for younger people in their 30's? I really like that deep animalic smell of Antaeus but only older men can wear it.
it's got that daddy is home wearing a clean white shirt feeling. yeah, a little goes a long way. It's an old scent, perfect, you won't smell like anyone else's boyfriend.
I have a bitter taste in my head thinking of this fragrance (just like for Kouros), the only two ingredients I remember are Thyme and Castoreum. Brrrrrr...
@@bac1881 yeaah I find it so interesting how people put these age restrictions and when you break it down it's just generational trends and cyclical biases, but then again I know exactly what they mean because this reminds me of rich uncles. I just fell in love with this and bought this at 30 and I'm a little apprehensive, but I can tell Im going to grow into it
Although they insist on the leather note, it's a barbershoppy animalic vintage powerhouse to me, much more aggressive and intense than Kouros, which is rather clean compared to Antaeus.
Interesting that you say that about Kouros as most people have it the other way around. I understand vintage Antaeus was a different beast to the current formulation. I find the Antaeus we have today very wearable once it dries down. That polarising ‘latrine’ accord in Korous never really goes away.

Please review Rehab by Initio next🙏
I've got a 90s bottle and the castoreum and oakmoss cannot be replicated. The newer stuff is genuinely meh as hard as that will be to accept.
Antaeus for me is like the sophisticated version of Kouros. A timeless scent that smells like a rockstar, punk chic.
Always informative, bro. I've been into the classic fougeres here lately so would love to get my nose on this one. Keep the 🔥 content coming. Thanks a bunch from good ole sunny south Florida
Pour Monsieur EDT 🙏
Antaeus sounds like Aventus 😀
They have it in Boots, I will go have a sniff 🙂
Is there a similar scent that's better for younger people in their 30's? I really like that deep animalic smell of Antaeus but only older men can wear it.
In the past years companies want to create prestige products long lasting and strong projection, today they want just to take your money
it's got that daddy is home wearing a clean white shirt feeling. yeah, a little goes a long way. It's an old scent, perfect, you won't smell like anyone else's boyfriend.
Oh the vintage version of this is so much better
I can’t find this anywhere in the US
I buy it at the actual Chanel shop so you'll pay top dollar..hard to find indeed
I have a bitter taste in my head thinking of this fragrance (just like for Kouros), the only two ingredients I remember are Thyme and Castoreum. Brrrrrr...
This Is believed to be heavily reformulated.
It's pronounced an-TEH-us...😘
ANeNtus by chanel ? 🧐
It really is just like Kouros.
Channel Antaeus is short for "Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention"
Antaeus is a fantastic classic 80s Frag. Definitely not for younger men. 35 and up only need apply. 👍👍
The targeted Anteus buyers according to Chanel who bought Anteus were 19-28 year olds. Their dad wore fresh citrus/lavender smelling colognes.
@@bac1881 yeaah I find it so interesting how people put these age restrictions and when you break it down it's just generational trends and cyclical biases, but then again I know exactly what they mean because this reminds me of rich uncles. I just fell in love with this and bought this at 30 and I'm a little apprehensive, but I can tell Im going to grow into it
@@caspar_gomezupdate?
Although they insist on the leather note, it's a barbershoppy animalic vintage powerhouse to me, much more aggressive and intense than Kouros, which is rather clean compared to Antaeus.
Interesting that you say that about Kouros as most people have it the other way around. I understand vintage Antaeus was a different beast to the current formulation. I find the Antaeus we have today very wearable once it dries down. That polarising ‘latrine’ accord in Korous never really goes away.
2:44 sounded almost like you said the animalistic notes are from the hamburgers they put in it lmao 😂 that would certainly be animalistic
@:12 did he just sat ANENTUS? i think he did.....for shame, for shame
They reformulated the hell of it, now antaeus IS flat like paper, linear, doesn't project and is one reformulation from becoming fresh scent.
The Chanel fragrance you test has a dry down. Has to worn to be appreciated.
Holy crap this is so random I have an older formulation from the 90s with real castoreum I would love for you to get your nose on
