  • The BMW Group Plant in Leipzig has recently marked a significant milestone by starting the production of the all-electric MINI Countryman, just four months following the introduction of its combustion-engine counterpart. This move further emphasizes the plant's commitment to electric mobility, especially after the discontinuation of the BMW i3, by adding another electric vehicle to its lineup. Now, the Leipzig plant boasts the capability to manufacture four different models including the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (which also has a plug-in hybrid variant), BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, and the MINI Countryman in both electric and traditional versions, all on the same production line.
The introduction of the MINI Countryman Electric is a pivotal step towards the brand's goal of achieving complete electrification by 2030. This model, available in two electric versions - the standard Countryman E and the more robust all-wheel Countryman SE ALL4 - promises an electrifying driving experience with no emissions at the local level.
To support the production of up to 350,000 vehicles annually - an increase of 100,000 from prior capabilities - the Leipzig facility has undergone significant enhancements since 2018. This includes expansions and modernizations across various departments such as the bodyshop, paintshop, assembly, and logistics. Petra Peterhänsel, the Plant Director, highlighted the growing demand for their vehicles and components, noting the BMW Group's investment of approximately 1.6 billion euros into the Leipzig site to ramp up production capacities for vehicles and electric components.
A key factor in this production increase is the MINI Countryman. By 2024, the plant aims to boost its output to nearly 500 units daily, in addition to the roughly 800 BMW vehicles already being produced. The plant's adaptable production system allows it to swiftly adjust to market demands, such as increasing the proportion of electric vehicles manufactured.
The integration of the MINI Countryman Electric into the production lineup was made possible thanks to the plant's flexible assembly processes. This flexibility extends to the assembly of different drive units, which are produced on a single line and prepared for integration with the vehicle bodies, a process often referred to as "marriage." Specifically for the electric models, the e-drives, transmissions, and control electronics - collectively known as the highly integrated electric drive topology or HEAT - are assembled directly within the plant. Only the production of control electronics necessitated the establishment of a new production line.
