  • Do you want to start homesteading but feel this dream is out of your reach because you live in an apartment, townhome, rental or other small space? I've got good news--you CAN start an urban (or rural) homestead without land if you live in a small space or city with very little money because that's exactly what I'm doing in a townhouse. In this video, I show how you don’t need hundreds of acres to start cultivating a homestead mentality because there are many homesteading skills that actually don’t require land at all. If you'd like a weekly companion to share your homesteading journey with as I prepare a move from the city to the county in the next few years, welcome to channel to build community with like-minded folks.
This series builds so check out the preceding videos if you missed them:

Can I just say how much I appreciated this video? So many of the other homesteading videos I’ve watched seem to be made by people with no competing priorities. The fact that you do all this on top of having a 9-5 job is so inspiring! I also thought it was kind of you to include your neighbor in your kombucha making. Best of luck to you and your husband as you save up to buy some land!

Hello El Chippo! This was so kind of you! There are many of us with small homestead dreams that are balancing full-time work. I''ve learned to embrace that 1. there's much to learn that doesn't require having your own land and 2. pacing your time, energy, and finances along the destination prevents overwhelm! Yes, my neighbor Shelia is slowly becoming a farm girl too! Have a great weekend!

I started in my apartment, 25 years ago. I made all of my own health and beauty products, I grew herbs and flowers and I soaked up all the learning I could. I did a little each month. 1 month could be a box of canning jars and lids, next month was skincare items, following month could be planters and dirt. It's always a fun adventure! Looking forward to more!

You’re on to me, Heather (and alas we are kindred spirits in this way) because your method is pretty much exactly what I’ve been doing the last few years. I have fully grasped that even a small homestead requires real work and I want the eventual transition to be as successful as possible since I’m coming from a rudimentary background. It’s proven to be a blessing because I’ve been able to build up my canning jar collection over time and other tools and add complete more from scratch projects easier and faster each year because I truly break things down in small chunks as my time, budget allow. Now, it’s just how I live in my home. Wouldn’t change it because it’s so satisfying. So many homesteading skills don’t require land, or you start to learn/implement skills with a few adjustments. I’m so pleased to hear this and know that others will read your story and hopefully also be encouraged!

Hi Kelley! I am humbled by your comment! I truly am still finding the words to convey my appreciation of your validation! I know I have a long road on this journey. I’ve only privately sensed that you can connect with a lifestyle despite not having all of the “external fixtures” but rather, use every opportunity to align your values and lifestyle in that pursuit. While yet managing the tension between my current commitments and as I figure out our eventual physical farmstead I will cling to your comment! I have tears of joy! Thank you!!!!

Im an apartment homesteader. I too dreamed and still dream of a small farm but alas it isnt to be....so far. I have learned canning, sewing, and making if cleaners while i wait. I also have a mini washer since my apartment doesnt have washer/dryer hookups and the communal laundry is iffy at best. Anyway, i can wash my clothes, towels, sheets and small blankets without spending money in my machine. I then hang dry my laundry and dry for free too . i use thrift stores for new to me clothes. This the lifestyle that makes my heart sing. And tells.me im doing ok. Im enjoying your series videos and although im already doing most of it i like to see how someone else does things too.

Hi Tereza! I just saw your comment on my blueberry jam video, but it’s so nice to meet a new farm girl! You are spot on! My husband is military so we’ve been abroad and particularly noticed that small space living is the norm yet they still create beautiful potted gardens, hang them clothes to dry, efficiently use their space, have a spirit of hospitality and proudly prepare meals using local ingredients still heavily sourced from local vendors. In the states we tend to believe you can only enjoy a farm fresh/simpler life once you have land, animals, etc. I know that we’ll make the leap when the time is right but we aren’t going to rush it because a-there are other logistics we have to consider and b-We still have lots to learn until then. I’ve done a garden tour but will have more coming for sure. I can appreciate that you are curious about my home and I will continue to share but give me some grace to work my nerves up to a home tour--I’m very much a average gal, in a “needs some work here and there” townhome not a decorator. Plus the majority of my home has been styled second hand so it’s a bit eclectic. I do hope to share very soon-perhaps this winter?! 😀 lovely to “meet” you!

    You are SUCH an inspiration!
As a Montana girl who lives in the city (okay, Billings, where we only have 115,000ish people) and only have access to a fairly small backyard, I am always looking for ways to make the most of the space I have. I know quite a few farmers/ranchers and with a lot of homesteading youtubers, and envy their seemingly infinite amount of space to work with.
In our 70x70 backyard we have laying hens, a new pair of breeding rabbits for meat, a modest garden, a few fruit trees, more permaculture berries and trees to come, and I'm always looking for more to add.
Your space is even smaller, but you are doing an amazing job of working within your limitations! Your creativity and drive are helping me be motivated to us my indoor spaces more efficiently. Thank you!!
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

This has got to be one of the most inspiring videos ive seen on realizing a homestead dream because it feels so close and attainable. You're absolutely right, you dont necessarily need a large plot of land to begin just DOING IT. And with the comforts of the globalized world spreading thin, with grocery stores sometimes struggling to stay stocked, supply chain uncertainties, and here in Memphis the very frequent city-wide power outages due to poor infrastructure, im realizing more and more that a passionate DIY maker-mindset and a desire to return to the roots, is the future and what will save us. We all rely too heavily on institutions like corporations or governments to take care of us, when we could easily turn the human condition around if we take care of ourselves and those close to us. Our true power comes from within and it is from there that we can begin building stronger local communities.
Keep it up and never give up!

BK homesteader!!! Thank you, truly! Ironically it was YOUR vertical system on IG last year that got me into strongly considering how to maximize my space this season! You won’t be disappointed! The ease in assembly, maintenance and durability are well worth it. pS-I though mr I replied to you within hours of your initial comment but it appears my reply has vanished. Apologies if you’ve received a similar comment m, twice. So good to “see” you!

Love as usual 💕! In the past two weeks I've made the djion, carrot cake jam, and sweet rosemary Balsamic onion jam. All were amazing and I tweaked them to my preference. I was actually trying to figure out what fruit combo to add to my latest kombucha batch so I grabbed some peaches from a local farmer today (thank you!!). Keep up the amazing work

Hearing this fills my heart with the biggest amount of joy! Thank you for taking time to share this. Isn’t food preservation the best?! And, I couldn’t agree more with tweaking recipes to your tastebud preference-that’s what canning is all about-giving YOU control over what you like. What I share is a baseline. I’m so excited you’re also making kombucha! I’ve got to keep adding to my bottle stash but I love how it’s my go to soda substitute. I am truly grinning from ear to ear! Happy to meet another friend that’s becoming a farm girl!

Hello Homestead in The Hood! Firstly, you have a gorgeous growing space! You are using it so efficiently between containers, vertical growing and succession planting. It's nice to see another small space grower truly maximizing space. And yes, I totally love fermenting garlic. While I haven't done a full dedicated video on it, you'll get the gist of how I do it if you watch this grocery haul: ruclips.net/video/mcEzs0uaf8c/видео.html.
