- I've finally arrived in the beautiful Emerald Isle and first on my list is the legendary Leo Burdock's fish and chips which has been a household name in Dublin now since 1913 making it 111 years old! Is this where my bad run of mediocre fish and chip ends?

The alarm went off with the celebrity list. Who cares about which celebrity has eaten there.
Just serve good food to your local customers. They are your backbone.
That’s a very very good point
half of them probably never went there
@Davidnumber23 Why lie though...I don't agree
I totally agree, who cares if a celeb has eaten there or a cleaner like myself. The important thing is that the food is really good. Great video.
@@rad6666 errrr...for money. That food was complete garbage yet the price was robbery.!!!
Let's be honest, food shops shouldn't have 'bad days'. Sounds like they are trading on their past reputation. That is a slippery slope for a food shop to tread. Anyway, thanks for taking us along. Appreciated.
Good point Jeff, thank you
@@GaryEats Its nothing like it use to be. Definitely living on past reputation. Not even average now.
Bang on Jeff Jones..!
Totally agree Jeff. There is either a standard or there isn't. It isn't like football where Haaland can have an awful run of form. It's a chip shop that should be so well-oiled that they produce consistency time after time, especially when living off the names of famous people.
There is a restaurant like that in Sutton Coldfield (Birmingham) called the Kebabish, and Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams and many others have eaten there because it was apparently so good. Had the wateriest, blandest curry I've ever eaten in my life and it's sad.
has it been took over and there abusing the old good reputation as its happened a lot around here and then they start serving awful cheap food for same price or more
You know you're in trouble when the mass-produced sauces get the most praise!
Indeed lol
Chip shop curry sauce here in Ireland is amazing. Some use the base and then add the juices from the broiled chicken. However the second i seen that pot i knew it was not going to be a good review. However Gary made an honest review and i respect that
What are you talking about mcdonnells curry is the standard throughout Ireland. All be it I never seen it in a pot like that it's usually sold in big catering drums to catering business
And that mass produced sauce is full of MSG
@johndeegan7925 foiyuh ,msg King of flavour haiyaa
Yep as an Irish person, I think it's becoming much harder to find quality places that justify the prices, when eating out. Your videos are brilliant very honest and authentic 👍
Thank you Gary, you're very kind
@@GaryEats You didn't go on a bad day. I've been eating in Burdocks all my life. Scampi are excellent. The fish and chips are soggy and doughy BUT...after a feed of pints there's nothing better.
Bless you Gary for apologising for “losing your temper” on the Rick Stein review! I don’t recall that. You are always a true gentleman - proved by the fact you moved your filming spot to protect the privacy of either diners. Never change.
Thank you that's very kind I do remember being quite annoyed
@@GaryEats So you should have been, chef's like Ramsay, Stein and Kerridge using their names to flog second rate products at exorbitant prices is a disgrace, really cheap of them.
@@GaryEatsI was annoyed for you! But you were not out of line. These celebrities exploit the public to make their bank balances fatter, so they should offer food that is commensurate with the price tag.
Frozen scampi is bang out of order at that level.
@@ElToro2000UK Have you seen Harry Ramsdens is sold in Iceland (the Supermarket, not the country)?
The restaurant is better than the Iceland stuff but not by a lot. You get bigger pieces of fish in an Iceland box from HRs, than you do in the proper restaurant for four times as much, which is insulting.
@@GaryEatsdouble dip cod in batter to make it look bigger?
Burdocks is a very pale reflection of what it was when I first arrived in Dublin (1984). I'll never forget how good it used to be. Now it's mediocre, as I'm afraid you've discovered. One thing though: they had a technique of double-cooking (?) the batter, so it was always thick, but in a good way.
Sad to see SImon, I was hoping to really enjoy this one
There's too much on the fish, before frying it should be scrapped off through the hand of the fryer.
That's exactly what my last fish and chips were like from a local place here by MerthyrTydfil.. It was also tasteless fish. Very bland. Chips were similar to yours. It was all undercooked. Thanks for your review.
If your in MerthyrTydfil, go to Trago mills. The take away is also good. Had good and bad at Trago mills with fish and chips. But they have a nice menu selection in the restaurant. Hunters chicken my favourite.
I'm from Dublin. This is definitely a place for the tourists. Locals stick to the their local chipper. 🇮🇪
Love to honesty of Gary's reviews. Unlike other food vloggers that get paid to hype up certain establishments
I always do honest reviews 👍🤷♂️
The pigeons gave it an 11!
Great review. When a business relies on a list of famous people as a selling point, RUN!
A very good point
Dublin pigeons hit different especially city ones
I live in Dublin gary.leo burdocks went down hill many years ago.Glad to see you over in Ireland ❤.
That’s a shame and thank you 🇮🇪🇮🇪
Embassy a better shout
As soon as that paper opened it was clear the batter wasn't cooked properly, a shame for a place with such history.
Yes, I don't think i've tasted batter that stodgy before
@@GaryEats how about a food crawl around borough Market??? Would love to see that one!
Yeah I thought the same, looked dire
The oldest fish & chip shop and the batter looked like a soggy nappy 😂 and as for the pale chips shocking food , good job the scampi looked good and the batter was spot on , I'm sure it must of been an off day hence how long its been there , better luck next time
Immediately apparent was that the chips were undercooked. Is it so hard for shops to notice that the chips aren’t brown?
Burdocks was once good. What you got there is the norm rather that a bad day.
Resting on previous success
Gary is the most accomplished and unpretentious you-tube vlogger I've seen. Always a pleasant experience to see the reviews. Dublin is a very interesting city. Enjoy your stay.
Thanks so much Kippo very kind 👍
They’ve been resting on their laurels a long time. Thank you for your honest review. People in Dublin are in denial about how bad they’ve gotten.
I am very aware of how Burdock's has changed over the years,it is no longer the best "chipper"in Dublin.
It needs to up its game unless it will become a tourist trap
It's a tourist trap like the Temple Bar district. There are better and cheaper pubs in Dublin.
Yes, just because of their claim to be the oldest, does not mean best.
Such a shame. The cod looked great, but no excuse for the batter.
I am so sorry for the bad experience. You so much looked forward to being in Ireland. The batter of the fish was not cooked long enough. The batter was 'raw'. The chips were limp. A disappointment. 5 out of 10 is very generous of you. The sauces packed in plastic were produced in a factory. Let's hope that the next place will be much better. Ireland is supposed to be well known for excellent restaurants. Thank you for the review. Hope that you did not become unwell.
No problem Sylvia, much better is on it's way lets hope
Thank you, Gary. The flabby batter, and anaemic chips, more than justified your rating. Excellent scampi saved the day. Let's hope the legendary Leo Burdock sees your review, and up their game.
Thank you very much, better is coming
Wouldn't be a Saturday without an upload of GaryEats! Mr Gary is so brilliant in his presentation and mannerisms that he can easily do primetime Television 📺
I bet someone is going to come and comment on Alan Partridge 🤔 Lol
Thank you ever so much Asad, always very kind
Yes! Gary should definitely have his own TV show.
My money's on Gary moving to TV next.
@@asadzeethree2726Is that why people make the comparison to Alan Partridge because of the articulate way Gary speaks?
The scampi looked delightful, as for the fish and chips, they looked nothing short of appalling
Nailed it Nigel
Leo Burdocks is a chain of chippers in Dublin. They have, (and that one especially has) been trading on the back of lazy reviews from people afraid to go against the flow for years now. . They just got very lazy on the back of recommendations in guide books.
Locals don't go in there as it's a bit shit and very expensive. That's all you need to know. What you got from them is standard fare.
Thanks for the very open and honest review on them (as per usual).
There are loads of good chippers in Dublin, any of the italian family owned ones are usually excellent.
McDonnells curry sauce is the biggest selling brand here by far, it's different to English curry sauce, but we like it. The tartar sauce is Blenders, used to be made about 300m away from where you were eating.
Try a spice burger before you leave, available in most chippers and unique to Ireland. It's not spicy, but I'm curious as to what you think.
As a Scotsman I am generally wary of any fish and chip shop that isn't run by an Italian family! I remember Leo Burdock's being good (although my last visit to Dublin was sadly about 10 years ago). Sorry to see it's gone downhill.
Not good at all, I think you're spot on and love Mcdonnells
None of the Italian chippers do a proper quality fish and chips the fish is always precooked
Leo burdock is run by he sons only interested in making lot of money
@@Irishesbox11 Calm yourself.
In the 70s and 80s Burdock's was wonderful. This was before Dublin became a global tourist destination. Then, come the 90s, they expanded all over city to cater for the influx and changed their menu and cooking methods. They were one of the last chippers to continue cooking with beef dripping which improved the flavour no end. Sadly, no more. Also, smoked haddock was their stellar dish, not cod
It’s sad it has changed for the worse Jim
Burdock's is a good sum up of modern Ireland, all about the money, quality comes 2nd now
Ah I see not good
@@GaryEats venture onto Irish rail and you'll see how bad it is, 20/30 years ago you could get a 5 star cooked meal onboard, now lucky to get a cup of tea
To be honest, I think that's true of everywhere now sadly. Money and profit first, quality of service about 10th in priorities.
@@Hoophey yep society is being dumbed down and demoralised so they are also more likely to accept poor service
I’d say second is a bit of a compliment. It’s a desert for decent food.
We eat with our eyes and immediately on first look I thought the chips were undercooked and looked anemic, the batter looked awful and the scampi looked very appetising! And so it proved to be. I was hoping for a stunning 1st Irish review after the Ramsay scam/let-down, but at least the scampi saved the day!
Didn't look particularly appetising
Spoons scampi is frozen but cheap and so good. Three buckets of scampi and a pint in spoons is a great night
When you opened the fish and chips, the paper sticking to the fish, the anaemic chips and sloppy batter would have had me returning the meal with a positive complaint and seeking a refund for what was a poor quality meal. You are a very tolerant man Gary.👍👍👍👍
Not good at all, easily the worst batter I've ever had and thank you
Next time you come to Ireland, come up north! I moved here 13 years ago and theirs some amazing eateries in Belfast and Antrim coast, particularly. Welcome to the Emerald Isle, our favourite channel! 🎉
It will be in about four weeks time
What do you think of mortens in Ballycastle? I love their seafood ❤
@@GaryEats If you make it to Belfast you must try 'Longs' fish & chips, you wont be disappointed, the most famous chippie in Belfast.
And Eddie Spence's though doesn't open for long hours - a real character though!
@@GaryEats Great you are both coming up North soon to do a review for us. May I recommend the 'Crown Bar' right in the city centre. It is the oldest or one of the oldest pubs in Belfast, dating back to the Victorian era. It's fitted out with Booths and Snugs and maintains the theme of that period. The menu is vast but the Irish Stew and Champ and Sausages onion gravy are my favourites. Great Irish quality and at very reasonable prices. I also agree with Trevor's recommendation. Longs is outstanding for fish and chips, and just across the road from The Crown. Just giving you the heads up. Take care. Sharon
Hi Gary love your content ……. I live in Dublin and you didn’t get Leo Burdocks on a bad day ……. These chippers live off their reputation of celebrities and the oldest chippers etc load of nonsense ……. Way over hyped and if you wine t back tomorrow or next week they will still serve you up the same crap fish and chips and think they are doing you a favour 😳 always keep your honesty that’s why we all love your channel 😀👍
I really appreciate that Jamie, I've not heard good things in the comments
I live in Ireland and I have to say it's pretty hard getting a really good fish supper. Not impossible but I think you're spoiled in England with good fish and chips shops.
I think we might be as well, Whitby in particular
No mate. I live in England. The chippies here are shite. Isle of Skye has the best one I’ve ever had. All in beef oil
Actually. In fairness. I can only speak to Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds and London.
@Nvlarr pretty much every English town has v good chippies now. This Dublin one looks like something from the 70s
@@Nvlarr that too general. You can't club the whole country together that way. Fish and chips in certain regions are amazing, in others terrible. I have found them better in the north and poorer in the south but even that's too general. Good luck trying to find a good fish and chips in Oxford!!!
A friend of mine several years ago set up a fish n chip shop. I couldn’t believe what is involved to produce great fish n chips. After months of researching, testing & trialing his product was excellent! I think most places become lazy & lose the love!
That’s a very good point thank you
Hi Gary, I'm Irish and I can tell you that you didn't go to Leo Burdocks on a bad day. Irish fish and chips are very mediocre, I didn't know good fish and chips until I moved to the UK. Anytime I bought fish and chips in Ireland, I rarely ate the batter, always the same soggy and thick. I think you are right when you say they should cook the fish in the same batter as the scampi. I hope you enjoy your trip. I can recommend Shanahans on the Green for steak (pricey) and Sole for fish. A good pub meal can be had at Searsons on Baggot Street. (Reasonably priced) Enjoy 👍👍👍
Thank you very much for all the recommendations 👍👍🇮🇪
Standards started to drop during the end of the Celtic Tiger era (mid to late 2000's) Lived in Dublin for 25 years and remember when Burdocks was truly the best.
Gone downhill it seems
When Gary compliments the factory's mass-produced squeezed stuff “You know the food is bad! 😐 7:12
Try to find positives
Haha yes ! He is such a gent !
Indeed, 'Go for the fish and chips, stay for the bought in microwave curry, and tartar sauce' 🙂😀😂
I didn't catch the name of the tartar sauce manufacturer. Anybody?
@@davidwitzany5852 . Blenders TarTare sauce.
No excuse that people are waiting in Line. Price is the same and it should be cooked perfectly evertime
Agreed
There is no bigger award than Gary's seal of approval, all the other ones mean nothing anymore, Mr Burdock can now really call his scampi award winning.
Ah Chris you are very kind
I live in Leeds and when my family comes over from Ireland to visit, the first thing they want is fish and chips because they haven't got the hang of it in the chippers at home. You can't beat Yorkshire for fish and chips.
Spot on, Murgatroyds was fantastic
@@GaryEatsthe size of the fish and the crispiness of the batter…heaven
holidaying in Yorkshire in a couple of weeks Murgatroyds is on the list.
Murgatroyds is the best ive had, brilliant,Burdocks was rubbish imo when i moved to Dublin 30 yrs ago and its just got worse.
@@bobhul2543 100% agree…I actually think people only buy it because they get to unwrap the fish and chips instead of it being in a bag…there’s not an ounce of crispiness to be found…Irish chip shops are shocking…the battered fish is always part cooked and then reheated in the oil instead of being freshly dipped in batter and served
It's your honesty that makes your reviews so good. That's a real shame after making the effort to go there. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for an establishment, the quality could rise and fall with a simple shift change but at least it gives them info & the opportunity to improve. 🙂
Thank you, have to be honest otherwise no point doing them
I used to live in Rathmines in south central Dublin about 25 years ago and we had a Burdocks there. It was absolute quality , however judging by this video both portion sizes and standards have slipped !! Good to see you sampled the legendary McDonnells curry sauce....I stock up on it whenever I am back in Ireland now.
It was an excellent curry sauce for sure 👌
This is the best food reviewer, quick intro, straight into the food then an honest opinion, too many other reviewers make it feel like being back at school
That’s very kind to say thank you very much
Have a Guinness on me Gary. Welcome to Ireland and thanks for all the great videos.
Oh Kian you shouldn't have done that, that's so incredibly kind of you. Anything I can do, please email me and I would be more than happy to help. Take care and have a wonderful weekend

Very very funny 🤣
the steam in the wrapping paper makes everything go soft i always rip the wrapping this helps to keep it crispy
This is true . My husband explained this to me only a couple of months ago .
I understand Michael but I only left them wrapped for about 10 minutes, unfortunately the batter was not cooked correctly as you could see 👌
I actually don't do much negative myself and understand you focusing on the positive. But sometimes, when things are really poor, I respectfully inform the vendor when I am not happy. It works for me.
Totally agree
I understand William however this is a review on what was offered
Love the crunch of the Scampi aswell as the look of it but that Cod. Absolutely shocking.
The scampi was outstanding
My wife and I have followed you from day 1!! Love your videos! We've had some great recommendations from you! Don't ever stop!!!
Thanks so much Josh
Love your honesty, telling it like it is.👍
Thanks Ian, you have to be honest
Hi Gary
Yes those fish and chips looked shocking as soon as you opened the paper. They looked virtually inedible. The best things with it were the mass produced condiments which were the curry sauce and the tartare sauce! However, the scampi did look very nice and redeemed them some what but overall 4/10 for me. From what I can read they are living a bit on their reputation from the past and like a lot of eating establishments find it hard to maintain early excellence.
Excellent as always mate and onwards and upwards in Ireland
The scampi definitely saved the day Tony
Raw is the word I think, what awaste to wrap around a beautiful fish
Not good at all, had much better
Good honest review Gary. As soon as i saw the ready made sauce, i guessed it would be rubbish.
It was a disappointment
Lovely to see you in the Republic Gary. Dublin too far from Tipperary. Odonnells curry powder/ sauce is sold in the shops. Shall I be surprised about the batter, certainly not, happened loads of times to us. Tramore, best fish and chips, batter crispy, fab. At least the scampi was good. Great show again Gary😂
Thanks for letting me know Ann, I was surprisingly a fan of the curry sauce and I didn't expect to be lol
I watched John Torode's ( the famous tv chef ) food journey around Ireland and he found some astoundingly good food and places to eat . It's definately there . Better luck with the next place .😊
The next one is absolutely outstanding 💯💯👌
I'd love to see you do a compilation of all the fish and chips shops you've done on the channel and rank them in order. This would be helpful for anyone coming to the UK to plan their food tourism spots properly. Cheers and many blessings!
The North East Coast is where you get the best fish and chips in my opinion. Fish from the North Sea straight off the boats.
A good idea thank you
As a tourist from the Netherlands I believe I had some nice fish and chips at “The Red Lion Parliament Street” (next to Westminster). I usually don’t fancy peas. But even the mushy peas were very nice! Finished the whole plate!
Nice!
When a Fish is Wetter out of Water something ain't right.
I have to agree
Got to be honest. Ive never had scampi with a prawn in it. Scampi to me is langoustine or lobster tail. 🤷♂️
Yes a mix up I meant langoustine
Dublin Bay Prawn is Langoustine.
@@riddimchef1 they are indeed.
Well if it has old Ricks approval that a sure sign it’s going to be rubbish
lol I fully understand
A moldovian family chipper called Romayos became the standard a while back. They have many franchises in Dublin. You'll often get a much better cod and chips in restaurants for some reason. As takeaways go, I also really rate 'Antonio's' of Cabra. Thanks for the great video Gary.
Thank you very much for the recommendations and for your lovely comment
I guess they have to redo the celebrity sign now.
Lol you are too kind brilliant
pretty sure the "celebs" didnt get that undercooked meal that Gary got mind!
@@GaryEats I bet they won't put any of your quotes on their flyers though.
You’d have to cook that batter for another 5 minutes but then the fish would be dry. Batter recipe all wrong. More beer/soda needed
Yes, far too thick
Gazza, a fish and chip shop in Leicester I used to go to sometimes did exactly the same, and the batter always tasted slightly odd as well but I could never figure out what it was, whether it was yeast or something else.
I can't describe it as 'vinegary' because there was no vinegar in sight, but something was off. But I loved the chunky pieces of bread with butter, and the chips were to die for. But fish is the star of the show, and if that is crap then all the supporting actors in the world cannot make it a 10/10 dish.
You’ll be very lucky to find any good food in ireland Gary, it’s a total desert. Everything done on the cheap and very expensive. I raised an eyebrow when you said you were going there.
I’ve got better to come tomorrow Ken 💯🇮🇪👌
Absolute rubbish, there are plenty of good eating places here in the west .Dublin is a tourist trap that gets away with ripping people off like this place and the pubs in Temple Bar .
A traditional restaurant known primarily for fish and chips is Steels Corner House in Cleethorpes. It’s been an institution for years and hasn’t changed since I was a kid. The jumbo haddock is superb and it’s well worth a visit. Give it a go, Gary when you’re next in the area!
I will definitely take a look for when I’m in the area next
Gary, don’t judge Irish food by what you get in Dublin, it’s probably the worst place for food in Ireland, try the other cities and towns where the real taste of Irish food can be had, not the plastic Irish food in Dublin.
I will be in the future but I’ve had some excellent meals coming shortly 🇮🇪🇮🇪
I agree 😊
Cork for one City
Dublin is the worst place in Ireland
Dublin born & Bred here and I can tell you from many years of experience this is absolutely typical of Takeaway food all over Dublin. I wouldn't bother with any of it TBH.
I think that's the original batter, when they opened😮
I think they made that batter 100 years ago Mark and left it there
At least it's authentic 😂.
As a kid when we went up to Dublin, we always went to Burdocks, for fish and chips. I remember it being really nice. I was Dublin recently and for old times sake I had a Burdocks. I have to say I was really disappointed with it, so was my wife. "of all the places in Dublin you could have taken me too" lol. She's no problem drinking in Fibbers though. 😂
Unfortunately, it’s turned into a bit of a tourist trap and definitely well done to the misses lol 😂
There's definitely better around in the city. Beshoff's has always been my favourite whenever I've visited Dublin.
I should have found somewhere better Andy

My local chippie Daniels only cooks fish to order, so it's always fresh, hot and the batter is light and crispy. For a professional chippie there's no excuse for poorly cooked batter, it ain't rocket science
This wasn’t cooked to order that’s the problem
You need to go to macari 66 in church town Gary. Leo Burdocks is a tourist trap!
Added to the list for the future
Shocking…how embarrassing for them and for Ireland. Need to rename it the oldest and worst chippie in Ireland
It was shocking for the chip, shop definitely not Ireland Gary as you’ll see in tomorrow’s video
remember your recent Tesco lunch/diner, you wanted to go back and retest...this is a perfect example, of a go back and try again...fried food places are sometimes very dependant on who is cooking/frying, when(time of day) etc...a fish chip shop may just be a good try to retest! I enjoyed your 1M lb restaurant review this am, btw...:))
That is a good point Jonathan. I may revisit in the future.
Isn't Dublin one giant tourist trap?
Lets see the future reviews
The city centre is especially around Temple Bar. Best fish and chips I've had around Dublin is Piper's in Portrane.
Burdocks not a patch on what it was in the 80's and 90's.Absolute muck these days. They had an old coal fired fryer back then.
It’s seems to have gone downhill Peter
Am saddened to watch as remember Dublin in the 80s and always had great fish and chips . My Mum was a Dub and feel sorry that Gary's first experience was dreadful . Hopefully things improve
@@GaryEats Nothing is sacred anymore in Dublin a hub for greed and avarice I'm afraid.Come south experience West Cork and Kerry.
I have yet to eat Fish & Chips in Ireland that’s of quality. I always find the same problem you encountered, that’s undercooked chips and poor batter. My recommendation is ChipWick in Worthing, West Sussex. Absolutely fantastic.
Thank you very much for your recommendation. I will take a look for the future.

I have to say Gary that the look of the food served agrees with much of our verdict.
Not the best I've but not the worst
I'm a Brit retired and living in Cyprus .
I beleive we have the best fish and chips here in Cyprus with Lambros fish and chips based in dekalia .

I may well come over to try Roddy
Hi Gary, love the channel, Englishman that lived in Galway for 15 years here….you seriously need to get to Galway and visit McDonaghs for the best fish and chips in Ireland (I’m sure someone else has mentioned this in the comments) while you’re there you should visit charcoal grill for an incredible kebab, keep up the good work 👍🏻

His wife Palma would ask customers "Uno di questa, uno di quella?" This phrase (meaning "one of this, one of that") entered the vernacular in Dublin as "one and one", which is still a way of referring to fish and chips in the city.
😂❤
My late Mum was from just down the road from Cobh, Bantry Bay......she & her siblings all still called Cobh Queenstown as many locally in their 80's & 90's do.
Great comment

I live in Northern Ireland and your experience is pretty typical throughout the island. Flaccid pale chips, soggy, greasy batter. Asking for ‘well done’ gets a marginal improvement. I will never for the life of me understand why the fryer has one very simple job and cocks it up so often. At €15, it’s outrageous.
Yep, shocking Mark
Burdocks has gone down hill in my opinion. They used to feed you well now its mean and costs a fortune. Living off the name. Not the same anymore. Disappointing
Yes not good didn't rate the batter
Most overrated place in Dublin. Utter garbage.
There are so many better options
Shame I wish I' gone somewhere else
Your first mistake was going to Leo's. Drive up to Clogherhead pier and try the fish and chips there. 100% better
Thanks for the advice
"Irish cod" probably imported from France! Worked in a take away for a few years and there is no such thing as "fresh" fish...all frozen
I have to say, if that’s not good to hear
Spot on review !! Years ago i had the chips and they were soggy and lacked any colour or taste. I saw the cod and it was exactly as described in this review. People go on endlessly about Burdocks and i could never understand why !!
Thank you... yes this was really poor
As an Irishman, I commend your honesty. Loving these reviews! Leo Burdock's is a chain chipper and tbh - they have been getting away with sub-par F&Cs for years. Brutal greasy food that has lost all its quality. Keep up the good work.
I really appreciate that, thank you
If the fat is hot enough the batter becomes a carapace that steams the fish, the batter then becoming an additional crunchy treat. Yorkshire people know this and it's why Whitby is fish and chips heaven. Thanks Gary, your vids just get better and better.
That’s very kind to say thank you
I like how serious and passionate this guy is.
Lol thank you
Best fish and chip shop in my area is Olivers in Old Basing Hampshire, 5 mins from M3 Junction 6 and celebrating its 49th year as a family business on the site. I always go for the haddock and chips and a pint of King John amber ale from the Andwell’s micro brewery 5 mins down the road. It has a small restaurant and tiny car park we’ve always managed to get in as soon as they open at noon. The takeaway side is always busy.
Thanks for the recommendation Tony thank you very much
Sorry you had a bad experience at burdocks gary, the best fish i ever had was in the black cat chipper in glengarrif Co.Cork, just fantastic.
Thank you very much for the recommendation Stewart. I will take a look.
Another great review Gary. I can’t get my head around one of the oldest meals Britain & Ireland are famous for & they can’t even get that right. The batter is the most important part of fish & chips & if the flavour is done correctly, it’s amazing. Unfortunately it’s very rare for most chip shops to get the batter right. If they can’t get it right after 100 plus years, they are running the business on past reputation.
Very true, I still think Trenchers was the best
Gary as a fish and chip expert, as soon as i saw the food i thought oh know, fish should have lovely Crispy batter, the cod will have flavour and BE flaky ,chips should BE 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀crisp on outside fluffy inside, also love scampI, but food is food and can vary, all the best to you and son as your pushing 95
Thank you very much, too kind. The batter was shocking on this
No such thing as a fish and chip expert
Wright’s of Howth is the place to go for fish and chips! Best in Dublin for me. Nice after a walk by the sea. Burdocks was the place to go when they didn’t change out the oil.
Yes been recommended many times since
Gary, your honesty is what keeps your subscriber numbers spiralling. Another great review.
Honesty is the best policy Don, thank you
