    when you move the circles around in the advanced colour editor are these just the selections of what the hue and saturation sliders affect?, effectively a colour selection, instead of a smart object.

      In Capture One, Smart Objects, as a distinct layer type, aren't available in the same manner as they are in Photoshop. As for the question "are these just the selections of what the hue and saturation sliders affect?" Yes, that is indeed a color range that will be affected by further manipulations with mentioned sliders.
