What is a Migraine? (Migraine Kya Hota Hai?)
Migraine is a condition which causes recurrent attacks of painful headaches (adhe sir ka dard). These headaches are usually felt on one side of the head (adhay sar ka dard). Migraine headache pain is often described as a throbbing, and it is made worse by head movements. Other migraine symptoms include feeling sick, vomiting, and being sensitive to light and sound. A migraine attack typically lasts between 4 hours to 3 days.
Some people experience a Migraine aura before the headache. These are temporary warning symptoms which are felt before the Migraine headache starts. An aura typically affects the vision. People often describe seeing flashing lights, zigzag lines, or a blind spot.
    What causes Migraines?
The exact cause of Migraines is not known, but it is thought be due to temporary changes in the blood vessels in the brain. Several different factors are well known to trigger a migraine attack. Such a migraine triggers list can be divided into six different categories:
    1. Hormonal Factors - hormonal changes experienced at the time of the monthly periods can trigger a migraine attack in women.
    2. Emotional Factors - stress, tension, anxiety.
    3. Dietary factors - consumption of tea, coffee, chocolates, cheese, citrus fruits and alcohol.
    4. Environmental Factors - smoking, bright lights, noisy environments, flickering screens, and strong smells.
    5. Physical Factors - tiredness, lack of sleep, and jet lag.
    6. Medications - combined oral contraceptive pills and hormone replacement therapy.
    How is a Migraine Diagnosed?
There are no specific tests or scans needed to diagnose Migraines (dard e shaqeeqa). The diagnosis of Migraines is based on the presence of typical symptoms (adhe sar ka dard). Keeping a headache diary can be helpful in identifying migraine trigger factors.
What is the treatment of Migraines? (Sar Dard Ka Fori Ilaj)
There is no permanent cure for Migraines (sar ke dard ka ilaaj). There are two main aims of Migraine Treatment (sir dard ka ilaj). The first aim of Migraine Headache Treatment (Dard e Shaqiqa Ka Ilaj) is to ease the symptoms which develop during a Migraine attack. The second aim is to reduce the number of attacks experienced by using preventative medications.
During a Migraine attack it is helpful to lie down in a quiet dark place. Common painkiller medications such as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen can be helpful in providing headache relief. If common painkillers do not provide Migraine relief then it may possible to obtain a prescription for Triptan medications which are very effective in treating Migraines. These medications come in the form of tablets, injections and nasal sprays. Anti-sickness medications can also be used to help with nausea and vomiting.
If Migraine attacks are frequent and disturbing daily life, then it is possible to use preventative treatments to help reduce the frequency of migraine attacks (sar dard ka ilaj). Migraine preventative treatments include:
    • Medications such as Topiramate, Propranolol & Amitriptyline (sar ka dard ka ilaj). These medications are taken daily. They can take several weeks to have full effect.
    • Botox injections at various points in the head and neck. These are often used in chronic migraines where one is experiencing headaches for at least 15 days in a month.
    • Monoclonal antibody injections.
    • Acupuncture
