I respect these shops for not immediately throwing away broken stuff, knowing that someone will come by and buy the items to fix and enjoy. Yet again, Japan is peak.
I'd say it's because taking care of your possessions has a long history in Japan. I mean, you've got the practice of "kintsugi" where you repair broken dishes with gold, which makes them more beautiful. There's even folktales of objects becoming spirits after existing for 100 years, and they'll be good or evil spirts depending on if they were well-cared for.
@@danielstefanovic2604 To an extent. Depending on where you live, large items need a fee to be disposed of. Games certainly don't fit under that category, I once found a Super Famicom thrown out!
I love hunting remote hard off stores. Sir you are living my dream! I have a map of like 250+ hard off/bookoff/other used stores in case I ever went to those areas
Coincidentally just a couple of days ago I checked the channel to see if I might have missed a video here, but now I realized I had the bell on as there actually is a new video... and what a nice one! I love these retro hunting videos in Japan from you! I have to play/pause/play/pause all the time checking everything thoroughly for all these treasures. These stores are just so interesting and fascinating. So much history and so many gems. (I'd have loved to see you test that InitialD game on stream, for example) 14:35 I'd always like to help out translating if you wanted to try these old Japanese games, but that would probably be quite slow. It was always fun when you played the good old Japanese GameBoy games on stream though :) 14:40 Shinchan spotted (17:25 another two!). Looks intriguing! Feels like in these shops you could always use another person or two next to you helping you spot and research things while browsing through the shops. I hoep, for some games you got on your trip, we'll see some streams (probably after work in the new home has calmed down a bit) ^^ 26:55 I believe I have NBA Street V3 for the gamecube, but I can't remember Mario and Luigi in it. I'll have to chech that out again! Nice find! 29:50 Super Metroid is one of my favorite games. 100$ is fairly steep, but understandable (I'd need to get a SNES first though). Last year you went to (amongst many others) the Hard-Off in Hachioji. I went there a few months later on my first trip to Japan after more than 5 years. I hesitated a bit and didn't buy that much, but it was great fun. (16:05 I regret not buying a few things after I was already back home... Pokemon SoulSilver for example. It had a decent price. Not sure why I hesitated there). My next trip is planned for November. This time starting in Osaka and heading to Tokyo via Hokuriku. Besides lots of sightseeing, delicious food, etc. I'm hoping to find some good retro deals as well. I'd surely love to go on a hunt with you some day :) Awesome video again, Nick! I'm looking forward to the next one here, and of course over on the Pokemon GO channel as well. Take care 🙂
This video took me by surprise and took away 45 minutes of my sleeping time, but I do not regret it. I stopped playing Pokemon Go then dropped into Pikmin Bloom.
It is always fun to remote browse through Japanese thrift stores, I would go broke if I ever made it there xD Thanks for taking us along! I would love to see a video about your MTG Commander experience!
Hi Nick, so happy to watch your video, especially as I was doing the same thing 3 months ago in Japan, especially in Kyushu area 😄 I just wanted to say that indeed, Bookbox in Kagoshima is an amazing place to visit. It's 2 old gentlemen that own the store, they are passionate and we had a blast. This place looks like a museum, it's almost overwhelming. Anyway, it's really nice to see you wandering around the same stores, it brings back nice memories. Thanks for the video! Cheers mate
Only about 1/3rd of the way through the vid so far, but man I absolutely missed these style videos from you Nick! You are an amazing story teller and it has always been something that draws me into your content. Thank you for always taking us along with you on your adventures
Wow, I am in Japan right now and I pulled up the old video just yesterday, which helped me find the super cool Hard Off in Kanazawa. I spent 2,5 fun hours there today browsing the big retro games section, thanks to you. My favourite find is something I can't fit in my suitcase, a Beatmania IIDX controller lol. And now this video pops up on my feed, amazing! Watched it instantly in the hotel and I am looking into Surugaya stores next ❤🎉 Thanks so much for making these video's

As a huge anime and video game lover, Book Off was like heaven for me! I bought so much stuff there! This video reminded me of how much fun my friends and I had searching for Book Offs in Nagoya while studying abroad. Thank you! c:
Nick I honestly love this style of video compared to the normal pokemon go content, I hope that maybe in the future you could post more in this channel when in and when not in Japan!
Those prices are getting more depressing each and every video i see....doesn't seem like 5 minutes ago i was living there and buying fami's/super/n64/gc consoles for 500 yen all you can carry.
Seriously only a few years back I got an n64 for maybe a few dollars. Glad I went when I did and got most of my kingdom hearts collection. Should have grabbed more though.

Loved the video as much as last years one. Went to Japan for 3weeks recently and I used your video to find the best locations for hard offs, safe to say it helped me find really good deals! :D
@@TheMysteryDriver I would say the hard off in Hachioji, managed to grab myself pokemon leaf green in box (without manuel but still) for 20€, red rescue team mystery dungeon complete for 13€ and pokemon b, w, d, p for 8€ each.
This was a fun watch. I spent many hours wandering around Hard Off when I lived in Shikoku. By the way, I love how you apologize for neglecting the Sony fans when you actually completely neglected the Sega fans!
Went to Book-Off Super Bazaar in Hiroshima at the end of a 2 week trip to Japan and it was a breath of fresh air compared to the Tokyo and Osaka pricing. got 7 Super Famicom and 3 Famiom games there each costing only 190 yen. I would go back tomorrow if I could.
thanks for doing this. Seriously, great job, because hard-offs and similar 2nd hand stores have been increasing their prices rapidly in Tokyo alone! And it is all thanks to us Westerners wanting to purchase these cool relics of a more innocent time. By making more videos like these, you are decreasing the chances of people being able to afford this cool stuff not just for westerners, but especially Japanese people that are suffering from a weak yen and being in such bad condition that buying vegetables is getting more difficult, basically shifting the audience it is marketing towards from it's citizens, to tourists! Thanks for helping the economy and for these stores needing to increase prices because you basically gave all of these a huge advertisement for free! Thank you!
I live in Okinawa and Hard Off is my favorite store on island. Since there are a lot of US military members here, the Hard Offs have a good mix of American and Japanese games
The Gamecube was quite well packaged, getting a complete in box will not occupy much more space than getting each component loose. Worst case scenario you can unfold the box and have it flat with the items scattered as it best suits you.
Great content man! Thrifting can be fun and you've hit my passion with retro stuff. I'm kinda surprised that the gamecubes go for more money then the wii's as both can play GC games if memory serves.

You're actively blocking someone who legit wanted this one thing and not just mindlessly indulge in overshopping from getting what they wanted. Edit: When comparing eBay prices it makes sense to check the "sold items" box on eBay, because dumbass scalpers spiralling themselves higher via their fantasy prices is one reason why the western second hand economy has become so trash. Yeesh, Hard-Off's prices have really shot up. I got a clear GBC for like 300 yen from one around 7 years ago! Nick I don't know if you know this but that game you called Monster Hunter was actually Monster Farm Battle Card or in the west known as Monster Rancher, which was also a cool show. Fun fact the playstation game was about battling and training monsters and they game into being through in game monster discs and the cool thing about it was while playing the game if you took the disk out and put a music CD in the playstation it would read it and unlock a new monster for the game. It's a really cool idea and something you might be interested in trying.
