Double call/no call is a major reason I got out of officiating. Personally, I'd say eliminate the call. No advantage is gained. I've always been of the mind that, at younger levels, we shouldn't be whistling too many ball handling violations as long as they tried to use proper technique. Let them play. One situation I always hated is when a talented team (lots of club players) wanted me to call EVERYTHING on an awful team. Like really, you want me to whistle the bad team off the court rather than let's play some vb? Here's a solution to the double controversy. In tennis it used to be a violation if the ball hit one part of the racket and deflected to another part. The powers that be changed it to be legal as long if there was only ONE attempt to strike the ball. Of course in volleyball you need to call a double if there are two attempts (example- right hand stops the ball then left hand strikes it.) Of course that would make too much sense. And deprive idiots from screaming "Double, that was a double!"

I totally agree with you. First, double hits are usually judgment calls that depend upon the referee. Second, it breaks up the game's flow for a nebulous reason. Third, it may be based on the ball's spin, which is not 100 accurate. Fourth, it may be based on the location of the hands after the hit or attack, which is not 100 accurate. Unless it is blatantly obvious, the double-hit rule should go the way of the woolly Mammoth.

I have a messed up thumb on my left hand, so when I set, it is basically impossible for me not to spin the ball. It really annoys me when people make the argument that the ball spins, therefore the set was not simultaneous contact.

The issue was he set a standard with the first one and found himself in a dilemma with the rest. Doubles on settings should be eliminated. I hope they are considering it. A referee should never decide a contest.

When I reffed intramural volleyball at my college, the first thing they told us was that the spin of the ball was a great way to look for doubles. Eventually I realized that’s an awful metric, just watching the hands and even listening is much more useful to make good double touch calls. However, for new referees and referees who have never played volleyball themselves, they might be going off of spin because they are just bad/poorly trained at officiating.

Ok so I think a lot of people here aren’t understanding how refs actually call doubles. I’m a setter and we’re taught pretty quickly that because it’s really hard to truly see if someone double touched on a set, the refs judge it based on the spin of the ball. So basically if it comes out of your hands spinning sideways, then they’ll call it a double even if that only happened because one hand used a bit more force than the other. So a bunch of these, given it’s hard to see the spin of the ball, very well may be legitimate calls. Calling a penalty like that on game point is definitely an asshole move tho even if it was a double.

Double touch is double touch and the call is made if the player hits the ball more than once in succession.
