I recently had a close friend lose most of their possessions in a fire that took mostly just their room, it was really hard for all of us. Even with knowledge of Buddha's words, it's always okay to feel down about things like this, as long as you can tell yourself that your feelings, just like your office, are impermanent. You've got this Doug, and we're cheering for you

  • @snakespeak

Your equanimity indicates the level of awareness you have achieved through practice. That is certainly a lesson in impermanence, one that this practitioner would not be handling so well. Best wishes for salvaging the valuable items that were in the fire.

Dear Doug, your equanimity is admirable. I can definitely relate. Several times in my life I have lost every thing I owned, through eviction, burglary, and fire. I will be 70 years old next month, and the one thing I can state as absolute fact is that all things shall pass. I am in the process right now of losing my home of 16 years, because a new landlord has raised the rents beyond the point where they can be subsidized. I have a hip that was supposed to be replaced, but the pandemic clogged hospitals have postponed elective surgeries. I have no one to help me pack, and I don't know where I will be going. This has been one of the most stressful periods of a long and difficult life, but your videos have been a great comfort to me these last few months, and have helped me not to panic. They are informative, thoughtful, and caring. I am so glad that you and your wife are alright. Remember that everything we know will one day cease to exist. I have come to believe that while knowledge involves collecting facts and experiences, true wisdom is the result of loss. The wisest people I have ever known are the ones who have lost the most. Be well, and don't worry about the videos, there are more than enough to chew on for the foreseeable future!

Always interesting when Buddhist content creators experience misfortune, reminds me of the guy from secular buddhism podcast, he had a friend die in his arms, yet he put his preaching into practice and handled it with grace. stay strong duggie.

This is really sad... Sorry for your loss, but wow, your handling it really well, and like you said, everything is impermanent... We never know when we can lose something or someone, so we need to appreciate them while they are here, and not be too attached to them, or else we will suffer when they are gone...

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear/see this! Can't imagine how hard it must've been at first! But the benefit of Buddhist practices (As well as Stoic ones) in general is that it gives us a compass for how to deal with these unfortunate circumstances, by trying to let go of the suffering in head in addition to the suffering already endured physically!
Seneca once said "everyday tell yourself you might lose your children to death this evening!" For learning to accept the misfortunes...
So sorry for the loss of your child, your office!

I am grateful that Doug and his family remain with us. Thankfully, Doug was wise enough to share this knowledge with all of us, instead of hoarding it all up and expecting it to remain there forever. Ancient or rare books are lovely things (in my opinion) - priceless even, yet, they are mere ornaments unless the wisdom they may contain is disseminated. Like fallen pods containing the seeds of the future, they must be broken open and their potential spread around - the benefits thereby multiplying.
