That would be a massive spoiler, but yes, that astronaut definitely becomes relevant later in the show. The show has the problem of basically reserving 80% of its plot for the last 7 or so episodes, but man do they hit hard once you get to them
As for the jarringly upbeat song; I'm guessing its just meant to be a palette cleanser so the show doesn't take itself too seriously
