My most dramatic change was in Legend of the 5 Rings. I asked this question: what if the Crab supported the Scorpion Clan Coup in 1123 and the coup succeeded? A huge amount of shennanigans ensues....
My first few games were all homebrews I ran in some of our favorite worlds. I think the ones I did best was fallout 17 years after fallout 4 set in the bayous of Louisiana and star wars set in the old Republic era circa MMO at the height of the war between Jedi and sith. With the star wars games I made it very clear before we played that nothing is set in stone and even if they completely blew up tatooine we'd run with it as if it were an alternate star wars timeline. They loved it
"The people are super friendly and very kind and nice to each other... when they're not, you know, engaging in genocide" ( 3:37 ) I know I shouldn't laugh, but...
So, in my experience, it's a lot easier to play a game in a different setting or time period rather than making major or minor changes to existing worlds. In Star Wars, if you don't want to deal with the Empire and Rebels, you could do a planet far away or in a time period where the Republic is at its height. In Star Trek, you could have the Party work on a planetary base rather than a Starship. Maybe at Starfleet Academy itself. Harry Potter doesn't need Hogwartz destroyed, just put the PCs in Nazi Germany. Germany has a Wizarding Community, maybe we can explore what WWII was like for them. Maybe you want the play the Witcher, but in a Japanese setting. We know there are other nations beyond the sea (like Persian Ofier), perhaps there's a Japanese-esqe nation as well. You don't have to turn a franchise on its head to explore different aspects of that world space. My 2-cents.
Thanks for actually doing this video I'm planning on doing a DnD campaign exploreing the world of All Tomorrows. I like the time period of the 2nd Galatic Empire and I want to explore that the most, so I have made a situation where they surived extinction but the planets couldn't supporte life so they traveled back to Earth, the home of the diffrent people's ancestors. I am currently working with a lore master that is helping me disscus on how to intigrate the magical effects and how they would be flavored, what would fit best for the playable races that we want to use as well as using fanmade other races that we liked, heck he even said that it wouldn't be too far off to see something like the Illithids and see them as a major new threat that could rival that of the much feared Qu. TLDR, I have taken notes of this and the previous video and I am makeing sure I do my best that I am doing the setting I'm doing justice.
What I could change about my favorite world set-up : dragons being more than smart giant magic lizard but civilized smart magic beings, maybe bipedals. OR gods actually mattering AND being mysterious
My favorite world settings are a tie between Night Vale, Legend of Zelda, Hitchhiker's Guide, and the Wheel of Time. But the setting(s) I like the idea of changing, the most, is blending Fire Fly, with an old game called Nomad, but on the high-seas, instead of in space.
@@AvenueStudios Nomad is an old game, based around trading, combat, exploration, and NPC interaction, in space. The beginning setup is basically that you are a human that must remain in space, for the safety of Earth.
This topic would have earned more than 10 minutes in my opinion 🥸very important. Even if we don’t think about it we make changes in existing worlds. So we better spend some time thinking about expectations and consequences.
I've been running an Eberron campaign. I haven't changed much in the setting. Though I did shift the Mourning into a more dangerous place. I have it so that there's only been one successful adventurer come back from within it. Planning on my group reaching the Mourning at a later point in the campaign.
FInding random Monty Python references out in the wild are always worth watching a video for. Arguably, one of the the better Star Trek tv shows was not being on a starship flying around in space, aka, Deep Space 9.
My primary system is The Dark Eye but I don't really use its world. If I use that world at all here is what I do: I make one very significant change and use the world description from back in TDEs 1st to 3rd edition. This makes for a much more frontier style of the world, less intrigue and politics, more border wars etc. much of the map is still blank or at least not well explored...
I would change the fact that you have NO CONTROL over when you go in and when you get thrown out of Narnia. 🌳🌲😡🌲🌳 Thank you, Guy.🦋 Now I know that it was LACK OF AGENCY that infuriated me that much.🤣
Eberron: The End of Days - The Mourning was the equivalent of the apocalypse, the planet shattered and now everybody trying to survive, but nobody will. The world is running out of time and soon be end, and nobody can stop it. The players are (un)fortunate survivors who are standing in the middle of the chaos. Who are you gonna be in this madness? Roll initiative!
Among the changes i want to apply to Golarion in a pathfinder game i want to do is that the game takes place in AR 5000, so its about 300 years in the future of current pathfinder time. the major changes is the world is now in a more technologically advanced and a war put an end to the church of Asmodeus in Cheliax. i am still trying to think of what the rest of the inner would evolve into after that.
What one thing would I change in my favorite world space? Ask me 10 years ago and I say Jar Jar. But now I'd say I'd have everyone writing the story for the Ray trilogy watch these world building videos and write a complete story BEFORE filming.
thumbs up! but i need more concete examples, So i can copy these awesome ideas into a quick one shots. i like to run, for my fam! they all have such diff, ideas and upbrings, so it would be cool, to have dnd happen in another form, something they recall. or love!
One of my gms added the internet to Star Wars, because he felt it was only logical and if the internet had been a thing back when the first movie was made, they would have added it from the get to. When we played das schwarze Auge, we changed the goblins, because none of us could remember that they were supposed to be red and furry. Ours were green and leathery. Both time something got changed because it was to far away from our expectations.
@@starshade7826 I know. But the holonet was kind of just a baby version of the internet, that we use today. Our homebrew holonet could do everything the internet can do and a bit more. We used it once to cyber stalk a new npc, for example.
Eberron would be accessible from other realms, be it through the feywild, other planes of existence, shadowfell, whatever. And it totally is at my table, never understood why the author insisted on being his world completely outside of everything else. Otherwise, we play mostly in the forgotten realms, and i take many freedoms to make it our own, but not too much, as people still should be able to read up on the lore when bored, without having to ask the DM between sessions. What happens right now is up to the players and carve their own way, and their actions become lore at our table for other groups to come.
Being from the west coast and having been to Utah I had to laugh, it would not make sense unless your born and raised here ... I lean to many small changes with no more than three major changes* (postapocalyptic or parody are some exceptions) the small changes can add up to noticeable but not "out of place" big changes the way I do it :) If I make major changes EX: Star Trek without space travel (crash landed and stranded) I will give players a BIG heads up on it (session 0) to help with expectations. 50 xp for reference, Search for the Holy Grail Monty Python (big fan)
I'd change nothing - Dolmenwood is a damn near perfect setting - I might get rid of the polygamist Goat-Folk - but that just makes them easier to villainize - Dolmenwood is great
For those of you who haven't seen Game of Thrones, spoilers below: I'd take away the resurrection mechanic in the show. It was awesome at the time, but thinking back on it, it feels cheap. Like the show was BUILT on the fact that any character could die at any point. So when Jon Snow is killed, with the resurrection introduced I KNEW that he was going to be revived. And while we're at it, the Night King should have won. Mankind was not united, and the white walkers should have obliterated everything

What would I change about Bionicle?...

Only way to play any Space Opera IP setting.
Laughed so hard at your American Surfer Dude voice, and the Monty Python reference!

Buffy + Boston legal is basically Angel season 5 ^^
