As mentioned, the worst mistake he made was talking to the police under the illusion that they would reasonably understand the motives behind his, 'offence', and use their common sense to surmise that he wasn't some hate-filled bigot intent on causing distress or inciting hatred, (religious or any other kind), on anyone. If he'd been cautioned and told not to do it again, that would have been the end of it. But, nope. The police wanted a scapegoat and this chap walked straight into their trap and told them everything they wanted to hear. The conviction was obviously politically motivated and he was stitched up like an over-ready chicken, supposedly to deter other from doing the same thing.

The CPS (and the police) want EASY positive outcomes or dispoals e.g. cautions and convictions. Particularly for certain fashionable 'identity politics' crimes. In an era where MOST serious crimes go unpuinished e.g. murder, ABH, GBH, rape, burglary, .. they need and want positive stats. They led him down the path to prison and he gave them everything they needed. Nice and easy. Unlike gathering info about a rape or murder or drug dealer or child abuse...
I had drug dealers/county lines dealers living next door to me for 2 years.. in the end the police were very good.. but it took a lot of effort from neighbours. Hundreds of phone calls. Our CCTV cameras. Without such the dealers might still be here. It took hundreds of hours for us all to get them gone.. the dealers got moved on.. no prison for them.

I really don’t know where the extremist Muslim nature comes from within a minority of UK muslims. Not only has the country bent over backwards to welcome them and allow mosques to be built and strengthen race laws, etc, but the pendulum seems to have swung totally in the wrong direction whereby Anglo Saxon Britons are treated as second class citizens and have no ability to complain or object, and this comes with the full backing of the law.

He was promptly isolated into a room by himself and asked why he held this ridiculous belief he said he had seen it on the tv news. My wife was then told to come to the school immediately and explain to him that his views were totally unacceptable and extremely offensive to the other pupils. If she would not do this he would be subjected to a one on one with the headmistress until he changed his mind on his misguided views on this wonderful religion of peace. Only then would he be allowed back into his class to remix with his fellow pupils. When he got home from school he was in a hell of a state as he didn't understand what he had said was so bad that it subjected him to a severe telling off from his teachers.
