    Next time you feel a pang of envy towards former friends who appear to fit in well in society, just remember Jiddu Krishnamurti's famous words: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society".

    I'm currently having a bit of an identity crisis in following my dreams. For my whole life I've wanted to be a cartoonist and after 10 years of trying, making cartoons is now my full-time job. But through my healing, I've discovered that I don't really have much passion for art, just for showing people my art and being praised for it. It's just that my art was one of the few reliable ways of earning my parents' praise and attention growing up, and as I grew up, I eventually transferred that onto everyone and anyone else, and now I realize I'm more or less making cartoons just because it gets people to love me and witness me and make me feel like I've earned my right to exist because I was denied that as a child.

    A lot of peoples dreams are masked desires to get a childhood need met, being famous and making tons of money or getting prestige, or having a ton of kids.
    I wanna grieve my trauma so not only will I have full access to who I am, but I’ll be able to shed any “dreams” that are just attempts to get unmet (now healed) needs met.

    Allows me space to create and understand myself better and just allowing me to be as I am.
    Far more important to me to maintain my mental and soul health than have the ‘approval’ of having an office job.

    Love your responsible and conscientious spproach.
    I do think in a civilized society we would offer people reasonable living for all sincerely engaged work without extracting all their time and energy from them in the process. Exchanging time and talent for money by the metric of the marketplace is a gross miscarriage of reason. If we could have a good civilian life that would leave us time and resources to engage our full talents and pursue our arts no one would mind working at something society needs from them. Nor would it feel like they threw away the best of themselves for someone else's enrichment.

    Daniel, your words of wisdom and compassion are a breath of fresh air! Your insights on the hypocrisy of society and family systems, the challenges but value in resisting those systems of dysfunction and sickness resonate with me deeply. They are profoundly validating. I wish I had heard this message in my youth by a caring adult - to live my truth but also recognize what Alan Watts calls “the Game” of society- to perform roles/jobs as needed to get by but in a way that sustains our lifestyles/basic needs so we could focus on what matters to us. What us truly fulfilling and meaningful. I believe I’m doing that now, and it feels great most of the time. Except when needing to deal with narcissists. But they’re everywhere, so I keep my distance from them whenever possible :)

    I wondered what to think about this myself back in one of your previous videos where you spoke about evolution. It's more clear to me now. As much as humans lie and deceive, probably at an all-time high, I must conclude that regardless, the truth is probably too much of a hassle to keep under wraps forever. Every time we deceive, we expend a certain amount of energy. Information spreads faster than ever nowadays too. And more people are growing old enough to remember. There's also a growing body of evidence that all seems to be pointing in a more or less uniform direction. There will come a few more turns up ahead where masses of people get mislead no doubt, but along with increasing numbers of forthcoming people espousing similar and compatible messages I cannot but see the inevitability in it. At this point my concern is just how much are we going to damage ourselves and the planet in the process before emerging into a new era. I too believe that authoritarianism, materialism and frenetic consumerism is as good as dead already. Just gotta wait for the world latency there.

    I don't really know what my dreams are, nor do I have much aspiration for anything in life. But even if I had any dreams, what are the odds of ever actually accomplishing them? we're arguably all on a predestined path design by society.

    • @MsSuperwoman2000
      @MsSuperwoman2000 3 года назад +9

      For a while I felt the same way, especially since I don’t see many people doing that. I soon realized that I had dreams but I saw them as such a dream. So far from me but really cool if I could accomplish. I now see my “dreams” as things I aspire to do and want to be known for. It doesn’t matter if you want to be known by a small group of ppl or the world or just yourself.

    • @bastian6173
      @bastian6173 3 года назад +10

      Dreams are not really there to be accomplished one day. The accomplishment happens everyday. Because life is just one day if you really think about it. Dreams and goals are merely for direction. If you have nothing to strive for, nothing that interests you, why even get up in the morning? People are depressed because they think everything has already been accomplished and there is nothing there they can do anymore. Nothing new. Nothing exciting. The key is to find the beauty in the moment. My main value is being able to look in the mirror. And that means for me that I stay true to myself and that I see every moment as a gift. And being able to create joy and passion out of anything. Just smile a bit more, be yourself and not be so angry.

      Albert Camus resolved this really well. His book Sysaphus covers it well. I have been using his insights as a life philosophy for most of my post-goddist life and even with atage 4 cancer diagnosis right now, i am very happy and dreaming quite sincerely, working on those dreams every day.
      Hint; you don't have dreams as much as pick them out.

    • @watcherwlc53

      there's no predestined path. but, the more passive you are, the more likely you are to limp along and land in jobs, friendships, etc by default. that kind of scenario is all to easy to misinterpret as a "predestined path" even tho it's not.

    Daniel, I am caught up in a very bad spiral. I keep watching news and feel more and more disconnected. I thought I was healed. But I see I have to start again. I feel disencouraged. Like my teen years a couple of years before. I wish I never knew so much about myself.
    I don't watch Television news btw. I didn't mean that part as something negative. I just think world has already collapsed.

      There is a guy that sees and acknowledges the collapse of his country, society and civilisation, and at the same time looks forward to the future with warmth and optimism. He is a native New Yorker, former economist, who has moved far away to live as a farmer. His thoughts might inspire. His name is Michael Krieger aka Liberty Blitz.

    Love this message Daniel. :) Another teacher I follow (Leo Gura) talks about the importance of both life purpose (work) and spirituality/personal growth. He recommends that one figure out survival needs through life purpose(s) while pursuing growth and spirituality. It's a good way to balance the two. Still a harder road at first with choosing a life purpose, often takes years to get to the point if making an income but is worth more than just the money at that point. :)

      I'm doing the life purpose course along with doing the inner work Daniel talks about. My dreams are getting more clear to me. Not even making an income on it yet, but the process of figuring out purpose all feels so worth it.

    I've become an old cynic: I immediately thought of Cartman..."Beefcake! Beefcake!"

  • @hughtrevor-flopper3214
    @hughtrevor-flopper3214 3 года назад

    This one talk appears to have a special authenticity. Now, two things: One, : Being oneself : looks like that one can be only oneself only one aspect at a time. Oneself is too complex, and too filled with potentials, for a person to be oneself fully or almost fully at any given moment. What, then, it is to be inauthentic? Perhaps that when you are yourself in just one aspect for so long, that you wake up at night with the thought, "I'm not myself anymore!" and you need to balance it out with other attitudes and situations. Another topic: the topic of earning for livelihood brings me to seriously grim thoughts. My close ones say "We're slaves, actually!" and their behaviour is really as if their regular employment - at fairly senior positions ! - really harms their minds. Nor are other jobs much better, judging by the rise of mental illnesses in society. And the world of work, the economic system is getting only worse, so much so, that it's not just to be "well-adjusted" that's 'not a measure of health,' but even the moderate adjusting is less and less 'a measure of health.'
