This video is so thorough and so very helpful!! Your funny and straight to the point. I love that you showed the breakdown and set up of each sofbox, because there is nothing worse then buying something and feeling annoyed every time you set it up or put it away. So many helpful tips and wow, you show so many different soft box choices. You are giving away years of experience in this video that can save a person so much headache and money just by watching your video. It's comparable to taking a class but I was able to watch it while sipping coffee in bed! Thanks for sharing such a wealth of knowledge!

I WISH I could say how much that video has helped me! I am JUST now getting ready to order a softbox and how you have displayed each, showed their output and share your personal experiences and at the end? Man...Light sample, description and cost-ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!! There is NO other video that can touch this. Honest answers and visuals to back it all up. Thanks so very much!!

The problem I used to have with Wescott boxes, was that the colors of the materials would change as they aged. That’s a long time ago.
My favorites were Chimera and Plume. My all time favorite soft boxes and umbrellas were those from Profoto, especially the extra large ones. But the Profoto products are probably the most expensive on the market. Of course my use was from almost thirty years ago, when I was selling this equipment in Hollywood.

The Westcott Rapid Box Octas are not designed to be opened and closed from the back, but people try to do it anyway and thus, the unnecessary difficulty of opening and closing them. The zippered slit in the side is only there for a way to grab the frame when mounting and unmounting. It's all explained in the instructions, but also in many videos by Westcott and others. It is incredibly fast and easy to set one of these guys up from the front, and equally as simple to tear it down. If you prefer to leave your diffusers attached (as I do), simply pull open a section of the front diffuser big enough to put your hand through and get er' done. Thank you, btw, for repeatedly alluding the high quality of light from these great modifiers. That alone makes them worth the extra cost, but the build quality w/the 10 year warranty cements the deal for me. They are truly built to withstand the rigors of daily use for many years. All that being said, you have put together one of the most helpful videos on this topic that I have ever seen. Thank you for that - nicely done.

Markus, I've been out of the photography game for a while now, and when I took out my old Alien Bee's soft boxes, I found that the interior lining deteriorated, so I was in the market for new modifiers. This video is untouchable in the way you compared all the different mods, showed prices, and actual examples of your fabulous work. This is the best soft box YT video I have seen. Excellent tutorial one of the best I've seen comparing so many different boxes. I agree with your results for the most part there isn't a real big difference. Using the boxes really close up for headshots makes a difference but the biggest difference that I saw between the small boxes and the larger ones that you were sharp at noticing and pointing out is the larger catch light with the bigger boxes as well as the lack of a hotspot. With the bigger boxes those are the two biggest differences. If you're looking strictly for bang for the buck those slight differences probably aren't enough to make it worth the money they cost. If money isn't too much of a problem then the medium size boxes are probably your best bang for the buck that allow you to have most of the advantages (softer lite ,larger catch light, no hot spot) & least disadvantages (harder light, small catch light, & hot spot). But the difference on location is fairly subtle and the headaches produced by wind and the extra bulk ( heaver to transport, slower more difficult set up) increases considerably with the larger boxes.

  • @jamesskintauy6773

Wow, so glad I found this! Why, because it confirms everything I thought. I have tried a bunch of expensive and inexpensive modifiers and, in general, paying more doesn't get you much better light. Further, and this drives me crazy, some of the more expensive ones are more difficult to assemble then the inexpensive ones. I purged everything that was difficult to set up.
Personally, I love the Cheetahstand modifiers - they perform like Westcott's, are easier to set up, and cost 30-40% less. What's not to like? That said, after seeing some of the Godox modifiers, I might try them if I need more. Right now there are no openings :)

    Hi Markus
Like your straight talking pragmatic approach. Always suspected there wasn't that much difference in practice between different soft boxes (of similar size) , albeit some are better built (durable) and easier to rig and tear down.
Unless you have one or more assistants I find it's really hard to use anything bigger than about 30 inch outside without risk of damage from wind etc. Liked your suggestions and illustrations for using with just a diffused reflector for quick and light too.
