Another top notch installment. In regards to a previously asked question concerning the pfd type used, I recently bought a NRS Chinook for kayaking. Can't even tell I'm wearing it. Looking forward to the next video installment.
I'm active duty and was based on San Clemente Island off the coast. Caught a similar sized Yellow fin off the rocks on the island last year. Best 1 hour fight of my life!
Another awesome installment! Rob this channel is absolutely the best. I have learned a ton about kayak fishing from your channel. The once a week release is killing me tho, I'd binge watch this whole series if I could!
I appreciate it man. I used to post much less often than once a week, so I'm stoked about committing to do that. It's just like Game of Thrones bro, gotta wait! Hahaha
Haha glad you enjoyed it Adolfo! They aren't technically a tuna, but a lot of people confuse "yellowtail" with "yellowfin tuna." They're part of a different species. But they are similar in that they both fight VERY hard. Thanks for watching buddy!
Stellar job again Robert! Top notch video quality as always. You should have waaay more subscribers! Better than just about everything out there. Cmon!
I thought for sure that Gaff was going to be in your leg the minute I saw the big wave behind you. That was a close one! Lucky Lucky man. Great video Rob keep them coming.👍👍
Fished La Jolla twice a week March through October 2003-2008. Huge 40-69 lb White sea bass come out of the deep canyons to spawn. Catch them on live green back mackerel. Before spooling with braid with a short tip shot half would run you through the kelp and cut you off. Caught a 50 lb beast Easter Sunday 2003. Went back a week later and watched a friend paddle in with a 42lb yellowtail he caught on an MC swim bait and Calcutta 400. Amazing fishery too for thresher sharks starting in late spring. When the squid move in to spawn mid winter you get a run of big home guard yellows and White Sea bass mixed in. Amazing fishery we almost lost to the environmentalists back in 2004
White sea bass is definitely high on my list Gary. I'll definitely be back out there to chase them. Sounds like you've caught some impressive fish, can't imagine a 42 yellow!! And I'd LOVE a thresher. We go for them in episode 4 up in Malibu, but catch some other stuff instead. It is definitely an amazing fishery.
+matt lawrence yes sir, similar fish but different fight. AJs cling to the reef and try to break you off. Yellowtail are pelagic and free swim all over. Both very strong fights.
Nice video and catches! I'm loving this series dude, and really enjoy seeing your enjoyment of catching new species along the journey. Thanks for sharing. Tight lines and stowed gaffs... LOL! :-0
This looks really great, been thinking about getting a kayak and this looks really enticing! Yellowtail have been on my bucketlist forever, but I don't get down to So Cal often. Keep up the good stuff
+Tristan Chhay thanks Tristan! This series will follow me as I head north to Seattle, so if you live anywhere on the west coast I may give ya some ideas on what else you could use the kayak to chase.
Doing one on jigs and lures is tough because I literally fish for different species all over the country (and beyond) constantly. I'm never using the same stuff two trips in a row. BUT I can definitely do a better job of giving the rundown of my tackle in each episode. I'll work on that. Thanks for the feedback Polly!
+Yakin with Jack yep. Closely related. But they're pelagic and swim around, whereas amberjacks cling to structure usually. They're both BRUISERS though.
Hahaha yeah man actually ate some at home two nights ago! Jees almost ate the whole thing, was very nice!! Think next time I catch one Im just going to eat it with lure still in its mouth!! hahahaha Solid videos amigo! Keep strong
Thank you! I don't worry too much about the numbers. I'll just keep doing my thing and if people dig the content, the subs will come. Thanks for being one of em!
Great video. Your guide put you on the fish but all your skills got the hook up and landed those fish. It takes some people MANY years. You're a pro!! Did you see any Great Whites??
You lucky dog... it hs taken some guys dozens of trips to La Jolla before booking one of those. If you have any of it left nothing beats blacken yellowtail belly.
+Kayak Fishing SoCal yeah man, this trip went so amazingly. Kevin is a hell of a guide. I had 14 fishing stops and I got the fish I was going for in 13 of them. I'm just getting started buddy, 11 episodes to go! I already finished this trip so the yellow is gone.
Amazing video, and in my backyard.. Why did Kevin have you keep the reel in freespool with your thumb on it while trolling versus using the clicker ? About what speed were you trolling ? Were you flying lining or using weight, what size/style hook ? Bait can be easy or rough in la jolla.. Why I try and be in the water before 5am.. Hell of a day tho. Thanks for the upload and visit !
+Tyler Lowe it's an incredible fishery man. He likes to let the fish run with zero pressure at first, just his style and it worked pretty well. Probably about 2-3 knots. No weight, 3/0 hook on a solid ring to let the baitfish move more freely.
Robert, if you really enjoyed fishing yellowtail off the coast of Southern California, you should really try looking into Cedros Island. It's off the baja and probably the most unreal yellowtail fishing in the world. I grew up fishing the Pacific Coast and nothing compares to my experience at Cedros.
I was there in July and the biggest mackerel I caught was 10 inches. Caught my first yellow there and it was great. Surprised to see lizardfish that far south.
It's nice to see such good quality video is possible on the kayak. I'll be adding kayak fishing to my channel this year and my concerns were camera positioning and wind noise. Looks like you have it under control. Awesome video.
+Grunter not sure man. It was gifted to me by a former colleague. Spiral (aka acid) wrapped guides aren't that uncommon though. I'll never go back to regular guides on conventional. Google it and you can find info on the benefits
+Salt n Freshwater NZ yep, but you call them yellowtail kingfish. I believe they're actually SLIGHTLY different genetically, but look almost identical. Yours get bigger I believe
No tennis ball on gaff? Glad it missed you. Great video as always. Heading over to fish brain bc I have no newbie idea what they are. If you like'm I want to check it out. Thank you RF! Over
Yeah dude, big lesson in gaff management, especially when coming in the surf haha. Looking back at the footage, I don't understand how it DIDN'T get me. Too close for comfort! The Fishbrain app is KILLER for finding fish nearby and connecting with other anglers, and it's free. Follow me on there and comment your username on one of my photos and I'll follow you back - @yakfishfield
If that was Saturday I was out there a little closer to the kelp beds and heard you hootin and hollering! Btw, that wasn't a big wave! Lol Super close call for the boys! Lmao
Honestly, looking at the footage, I don't understand how it DIDN'T get the boys. Like, all my knowledge of physics said I should've been headed to the hospital. Somehow it missed me.
dude! I was born and raised in cali and you passed awesome fishing in san clemente just south of dana point actually next town south of dana point. fish about 100 yards out from the end of the pier there is a nice rock reef with lots of sheephead and calico bass sand bass run very large, also the halibut are larger here than dana point. before storms removed the end half of the pier you could hit this reef easily, they doubtfully will never build the pier out to its original length sad for die hard pier fisherman. Then there is the san onofre nuke plant just before oceanside, a great place for huge halibut due to the warm water from the plant. san clemente also has a state beach with a totally awesome state campground. the only thing I miss about cali is the ocean fishing in southern cali. also san clem is only 70 miles from the baha border undeniably the best fishing I have ever experienced on both sides of the peninsula all the way down to la paz! baha would definitly be for a series all of its own! Fish on! and keep up with your great videos!!!
Yeah man, did 6500 miles in 33 days, couldn’t fish every awesome spot. My mom lives in Irvine so I’m out there a few times a year. I’ll do San Clemente. You should watch my series from mothershipping to San Clemente Island. I know it’s a different San Clemente, but it was dope.
Awesome catches and video! I got one of those yellow jacks down in the keys last July on a head boat with a junk rod and real and won the 150$ biggest fish pot😬
Excellent Video, I wish they would come more often. I was wondering if you were fishing the North West corner? Did you fish the kelp forest? I can't wait to see that Sheephead!
+Steve Hernandez I'm posting 2 videos a week man, that's a LOT of editing. Can't do any more often than that. We were way out, probably over 2 miles. And yep we were fishing near kelp. The sheephead episode is a trip man. Hope you like it!
+Jason Smolicz thanks Jason. Only a couple people on the planet have landed a Goliath from the kayak. Luckily I'm friends with one of em. I'll hit up Ben Chancy and see what he's up to
The best yellowtail fishing is when your throwing the surface iron (which is basically a big piece of metal that swims on the surface) they can't stand the iron! The best feeling is when your reeling that jig as fast as you can and all of a sudden it just stops and starts to get heavy!
You've got balls, I know what's in those waters, I lived there while serving in Navy, would go to the cove and the seal lions would be 20 feet away from me on their side of the beach. There also used to be a leopard shark that hung out right in the cove and would come right up to you in the water while diving, within touching distance, not ta mention the rocks. You're out in the water further away but near the shore alot of rough necking going on with sharks and people. I knew a girl who was killed probably from a great white they found her surfboard in pieces, it wasn't a great way to die. Still went out though. Love that area, great video, omg there some good eating in those waters.✌❤☀
Cool video but holy shit! Using 4lbs of drag or something? Those fish pulled more drag than my #35 - 45 Yellowtails. Looking forward to your next video!
+Ryan Petty I like to err on the side of looser drag when fighting a fish I've never caught. Much more forgiving when you have no idea what to expect. But it was probably around 6-8lbs. It was towing my kayak so tight enough to move 300 lbs of boat gear and human
Heck yeah!

I appreciate it man. I used to post much less often than once a week, so I'm stoked about committing to do that. It's just like Game of Thrones bro, gotta wait! Hahaha
watching you reel in that tuna had me at the edge of my seat...great video Robert
Haha glad you enjoyed it Adolfo! They aren't technically a tuna, but a lot of people confuse "yellowtail" with "yellowfin tuna." They're part of a different species. But they are similar in that they both fight VERY hard. Thanks for watching buddy!
Another amazing video. Keep up the great work. Those yellowtail are awesome.

I thought for sure that Gaff was going to be in your leg the minute I saw the big wave behind you. That was a close one! Lucky Lucky man. Great video Rob keep them coming.👍👍
+Charlie Garcia honestly after looking at the footage I don't understand how it DIDNT get me. But I'm glad it missed. Thanks Charlie
Love my backyard. Great video. Such a fun fishery.
It really is man, you're lucky to call that home!
Fished La Jolla twice a week March through October 2003-2008. Huge 40-69 lb White sea bass come out of the deep canyons to spawn. Catch them on live green back mackerel. And I'd LOVE a thresher. We go for them in episode 4 up in Malibu, but catch some other stuff instead. It is definitely an amazing fishery.
Give us a heads up in early March. Short braid with # 30 or 40 short
Nice! Have never battled a yellowtail, but got me a amberjack this past weekend in the Gulf off of Fl. They are are the donkeys of the sea!
+matt lawrence yes sir, similar fish but different fight. AJs cling to the reef and try to break you off. Yellowtail are pelagic and free swim all over. Both very strong fights.
Every episode gets better then the other. Keep up the good work and fishing.
Thanks man, I appreciate that! I think they continue to get better as the season goes on. Thanks for watching!
Robert Field 👍
Nice fish! Once again great video cant wit for th rest of them! This definitely got me pumped to LJ this weekend
Thanks Preston! That is an incredible place man, good luck!
Absolutely great video!! Way to go with those awesome fish. You must be one ripped dude with all that distance covered and giant fish??!!
Haha not as ripped as I’d like but I stay in decent shape
Just noticed the spiral wrapped rod, niceeee
Big fan of acid wrap for heavier gear
Robert Field so how do you feel about it for bass fishing, is there a place for it?
Nice video and catches! I'm loving this series dude, and really enjoy seeing your enjoyment of catching new species along the journey. Thanks for sharing. Tight lines and stowed gaffs... LOL! :-0
+Lookin 2kayak thanks man! And yeah, big lesson learned in gaff management this trip, haha.
Lol! You almost got your nether regions gaffed, and your like "whoops, that was close." Another great video.

+Tristan Chhay thanks Tristan! This series will follow me as I head north to Seattle, so if you live anywhere on the west coast I may give ya some ideas on what else you could use the kayak to chase.

Loved it mate. Thank you. Anychance you can give us a rundown of your favorite gear? Jigs, lures, bait etc...
Robert Field fair enough mate. I know what you mean. Thanks for the reply and for the effort you put in for you audience.

Thanks Joey!! Glad you liked it
Nice fish buddy. It definitely looks like a brightly colored amber jack
+Yakin with Jack yep. Closely related. But they're pelagic and swim around, whereas amberjacks cling to structure usually. They're both BRUISERS though.
Robert Field no doubt i had a couple of reef donkeys on the end my line. They are the linebackers of the sea imo
great vid! just discovered your channel. yellowtail fishing looks awesome!
+Noor Younossi thanks man! It definitely is, those fish are nuts.

Yeah of course, love your content!!
Close call there with that gaff!
Way too close for comfort. Haha
Great video. Your guide put you on the fish but all your skills got the hook up and landed those fish. It takes some people MANY years. You're a pro!!
Did you see any Great Whites??
+Ken Roesner thanks man! No great white sightings this day but my mom and I had a 9 footer cruise by us in Dana Point right by the swim buoy.

Great action

Kingfish are in at South Australia mate
I'll be in Australia in February
Nice kayak
Thanks
Yakfish is where it's at. These vids are amazing
Thanks Mike!
Here in Australia that is actually a Kingfish
JTrules 24 isn't a kingfish a giant trevally?
You lucky dog... it hs taken some guys dozens of trips to La Jolla before booking one of those. If you have any of it left nothing beats blacken yellowtail belly.
+Kayak Fishing SoCal yeah man, this trip went so amazingly. Kevin is a hell of a guide. I had 14 fishing stops and I got the fish I was going for in 13 of them. I'm just getting started buddy, 11 episodes to go! I already finished this trip so the yellow is gone.

+Adam Jussila I have a trip planned there wth Fish Village. Www.fishvillage.com
Can't wait to see some videos, then! The calico bass fishing is also legendary on the far end of the island if you're interested...
Awesome video.
Thanks!
I was there in July and the biggest mackerel I caught was 10 inches. Caught my first yellow there and it was great. Surprised to see lizardfish that far south.
Millions of em haha, Kevin said it was weird too
Man I’m super jealous! I’m yet to catch a yellow! Looks like a hell of a time
Tooooo much fun
It's nice to see such good quality video is possible on the kayak. I'll be adding kayak fishing to my channel this year and my concerns were camera positioning and wind noise. Looks like you have it under control. Awesome video.
Ya don't come between a Samurai and his sword, but I didn't know it covered phones too❓😜❓
Kevin's the man❗😎
Yes he is!
That's one unique looking custom rod there Robert . Spiral guides ! Who makes the blank ?
+Grunter not sure man. It was gifted to me by a former colleague. Spiral (aka acid) wrapped guides aren't that uncommon though. I'll never go back to regular guides on conventional. Google it and you can find info on the benefits
Nice video. We have those yellowtails here in new zealand too.
+Salt n Freshwater NZ yep, but you call them yellowtail kingfish. I believe they're actually SLIGHTLY different genetically, but look almost identical. Yours get bigger I believe
Another good video👍Ur so good
Thanks Mango!
Robert Field have u every went bass fishingn

It was a tiny wave, I just need to work on where I store my gaff, haha. I was terrified.
Honestly, looking at the footage, I don't understand how it DIDN'T get the boys. Like, all my knowledge of physics said I should've been headed to the hospital. Somehow it missed me.

+Bryan Wildasin that's a different fish. Yellowtail aren't in the Atlantic. Do you mean a jack crevalle? I catch a lot of those in Florida
No not cravel it was a yellow jack.i will find a picture of it
I didn't have yellow fins like that tho I think can't find a good pick
Guess I can't put a pic here🤔
cali definitely gets u pumped
It's an awesome fishery!
Robert Field definitely i have caught 2 yellowtail and a lot of rock fish, lingcod, and sheepshead they make great tacos
I go for all of those other species in upcoming episodes, and cook a few of them up in VLOG episodes. Stay tuned!
Good looking sandwich! 😁😎😁
Ohhhhhh yeahh it was
Robert field, Great job. I would love to see some videos on Goliath grouper.
+Jason Smolicz thanks Jason. Only a couple people on the planet have landed a Goliath from the kayak. Luckily I'm friends with one of em. I'll hit up Ben Chancy and see what he's up to
Great video Rob will u ever come over sea to fish?
+callum millar I've been to Maui and Panama so far. Just have to line up funding, but eventually I'd like to fish EVERYWHERE
great job man! wish I knew you were in town or I'd have been out there with you guys. how long are you in SD?
+Alec Stollfuss im already gone brother, but I'll be back out there before long
Awesome vid 👌
Thanks man I appreciate that!
Yo! You are one lucky dude with that "gaffe"
+Robert Mitchell yeah dude, way too close for comfort
Nice vid keep up the good work
Thanks Julie I appreciate that!
That other guys kayak that had the love bait in it at 3:55. What was the name of that kayak?
+Brandon Watkins that's a Hobie Pro Angler
Which hobie pro angler though
The best yellowtail fishing is when your throwing the surface iron (which is basically a big piece of metal that swims on the surface) they can't stand the iron! The best feeling is when your reeling that jig as fast as you can and all of a sudden it just stops and starts to get heavy!
+Noahm we did have surface irons tied on in case we saw some swimming up top but we didn't. Next time!
all the respect from kuwait !
+Abdullah Boftain thank you Abdullah!
Bait tank on that tiny kayak??? That's wild.
+Awsum Guy lots of people use em. Hobie makes that one
Lol fun way to get tired man 👍🎣
You've got balls, I know what's in those waters, I lived there while serving in Navy, would go to the cove and the seal lions would be 20 feet away from me on their side of the beach. There also used to be a leopard shark that hung out right in the cove and would come right up to you in the water while diving, within touching distance, not ta mention the rocks. I don’t worry about sharks too much. I’m terrified of bees and they kill way more people annually, as do coconuts.
Hey man nice yellow! I'll be in ft. Lauderdale next week. Recommend any deep sea fishing charters? Thanks!
Thanks dude! Deep Blue Kayak Fishing is a great one: www.deepbluekayakfishing.com
Awesome vid. amazing fish chit what kind of rod reel and line do you use for monsters like that. peace and be safe out there.
I was using a Seigler Reels SG and a custom rod with 65lb braid main line and 40lb fluoro leader to a pretty small 4/0 circle hook.
Loved the video. Beautiful fish. What song was playing during the fight?
+Frederick Satkin which fight? There were 2
Robert Field the first fight on the yellow tail
Here in Argentina is called Pez Limón
Nice! I did not know that.
good video
Who makes your yakin attire? they look light especially for California summer kayaking!!
That's stuff from NRS, I love their gear!
Lol haha 😄 crazy good stuff Rob 👍🎣
Thanks Dwayne! Those fish pull SO hard.
