I can really see the joy this brings you. It’s the same with me when I bring mine out and play with it. My wife thinks it’s strange that a 55 year old man can enjoy this toy as much as I do. She gets tired of me asking her to look at the way different tools work.
I know what you mean. My current wife (long story!) loves this stuff too so I'm a happy man.
Alec
Haha. My Wife got mad at me once for always talking to my friends about ships, planes, locomotives, machine shops etc.
I own this exact same model. My dad bought it for me when I was a little girl. Loved it and still do! It‘s still running perfectly 😊
That's awesome! They do last forever. Have you seen my other Wilesco ranch toys: steam engine, fire engine?
A
He has a smile on his face like a child playing with that engine.
Oh yes. My ranch toys are very old, still work and make me smile whenever I bring them out to show the grandkids.
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch I was thinking about getting a steam engine for me and the kids to play with. They are around 300 Dollars I would hate to spend that kind of money if everybody gets bored with it after just a couple hours. But I think I might get one anyway.😁
I own that very same steam engine. My dad got it for me when I was in elementary school and to this day it‘s one of my greatest treasures. Thank you for sharing this video.
Mine too! Glad you like it.
Thank you Alec, I own a D21 and gas fire mine, I have yet to build a workshop and what you have is a great example of just what i hope to achieve.
Go for it! Get any kids involved or have fun on your own. I still bring it out a few times a year to fire it up.
A
My uncle gave me one when I was 11. Still have it and it's been great fun!
So true. Show a young child today and they have no idea how heat is converted to steam to power tools. A great learning tool.
Alec
Alec, I remember my grandfather mentioning the 'belt slingers' in his time (most of which only had one arm left) - said they were paid well because it was such a dangerous job. The belts were usually made of leather and would slip pretty bad at the start of the season if they were dried out. The Slingers would have to slather them with pitch to get them to grip and pray they got out of the way quickly enough (lest they lose the remaining arm!). Great video!
I've seen pictures of the old factories. Pretty scary.
Alec
What a fun steam toy.
It's a hoot.
Alec
Hi Alec that is quite similar to the one I had as a kid but much shinier. I forgot about all the accessories that you could buy for them, I think it was available at the model train stores (long gone now) .Wow you have a lot of neat toys! It goes to show you are never too old to have some fun with toys. Take care owen m
Never to old to have fun!!!!!!!!!!
Alec
My parents bought me one of these with a workshop when I was about 10 years old, its a bit rusty now but I still have it and the workshop. I had hundreds of hours of fun with it..
They are still great fun and a learning tool for kids, just like me! Thanks for watching.
A
I’ve hooked mine to a series of Lemax LED lights and use it to light my live steam railway at night. Great video! Love the workshop pieces and your smile says it all.
Very cool mix of old and new Terry.
This is so much better that video games.
Teaches real industrial mechanical principles and lots of fun.
Great setup, unfortunately kids today don't seem to find it facinating. To me it's a lovely setup and as a kid I would have spent many hours playing with it. Thanks for sharing
Too many digital distraction today. As we know, back in the analog days, these toys were samples of real world work places. I love bringing it out for the grandkids to stare at and ask what is that?
A
Great fun, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
we all need our toys my friend , with you all the way even if I am a retired merchant navy engineer
Love my toys, the steam engines, potato cannon and bulldozer! Watch my video on these for more laughs.
A.
You can place a copper tray in the esbt tray and it will burn alcohol I built mine out of some copper flashing and it works great in the traction engine no solder just some fancy folding to make a rectangular box
I'll try that.
Alec
The fact that my name is Kevin makes this video so much more awesome
Well without Kevin, I would not be able to share my scuba or ranch ideas so Kevin's are very much needed in this world.
Hi Alec. Congrats for your video. I see happyness in your smile. I also have a Wilesco collection and those toys are the most educative in the World and so beautifull ! I just purchased the D141 this a Factory from Wilesco. But your D18 is one of my favorite. I love the way you explain. Kind regards from Europe. Chris from Brussels Belgium near Bastogne and WW2 War Muséum. (I have a young boy 5 years, his name is Alec)
Thanks Christophe and glad you like my toys, sorry kids toys. Hope your young Alec watches and loves these ranch toys. Show him my Ultimate toy, the bulldozer! Appreciate your comment and enjoy.
Superb video, thank you.
Thank you too!
Wilesco... Still hand-made in Germany to this day.
Yes and after all these years, still fun to play with.
@@atticusalan2070 Scam
@@elianhouston2918 And you're part of the scam pretending to agree.
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch Yeah, I've been looking at them myself for awhile now. Wilesco have quite and extensive range. Still haven't yet decided on what my first purchase will be to "get my feet wet" so to speak.
If you're interested how they're all made, there's a Wilesco factory video here on RUclips filmed in 2006. Its 25 mins long and the talking is in German but has English subtitles. The main narration which describes all the details is in full English though.
Its great to see its all just regular folk like you and me doing it. Very little in the way of machinery.

@@Crimsonedge1 Get the D21 , you can pump water in to the boiler
very Nice little Toy Alec thanks
You bet!
Awesome toy! 😊
Fun for everyone, mostly older kids.
Thanks for watching Lazaro.
Alec
I ordered a Wilesco D405 traction engine last year. I’ve had great fun with it besides from the clutch having issues. Just fixed it tho and am awaiting a new whistle so I can get it back in to service!
They are fun and very educational for young ones. Did you see my steam fire truck video?
A
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch I did see it! It was also very nice! I’m looking at getting one sometime soon hopefully!
That’s very cool.
👍
Thanks.
Alec
Love it!!
Thanks. Obviously me too.
Alec
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
A
Nice setup you've got there, Wilesco engine workshops are quite something to see when they are all connected up and running. I've been meaning to start collecting live steam myself, but I keep buying too many model trains! In my opinion the traction engines look nicer when you have nothing to hook them up to, so I'll be on the lookout for those. Cheers, from Australia!
Hello from Canada. Trains are cool too but take up a tiny bit more space....
A
very nice machine and good explained!! I also have some of these nice ones...
warm greetings from southern germany!
I still enjoy setting these up every year. Take care.
A
Great little film
Thanks for posting
I’m about to get pretty much this set up for myself and grandkids
I’m a Brit by the way
Cheers
Have fun! Big kids enjoy these the most.
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch👍😎🍻
First time viewer! Thank you Alec :)
What can I say - I'm a toys guy. Alec
such a great engine.
Fun for kids of any age. My grandkids ask me to bring it out or the other ranch toys like the steam fire truck or bulldozer!
My new hobby, to start when I go Rving.
It's fun for kids to learn about how power is moved from steam to useful tools.
Really a enyoyable video congrats from. MÉXICO
Thank you very much!
A
I have not had mine for 40+ years. But i can still smell the fuel and hear the flywheel spinning up now.
I would look just like you when i ran my engine. I would spend hours building things from my Erector Set to run.
These are fun and educational too. The grandkids ask me to pull them out when visiting, can't say no.
A
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch that makes me happy. I love hearing that kids are interested in things that have no electronics.
I still use strike anywhere matches every day, the brand is "cowboy matches" , I buy them online for 90 c /100 pcs in Belgium, they work very well.
They probably would be easier, I just happened to have an old box around. Don't use matches much except for these toys and lighting winter fire starters. Thanks for watching.
Alec
Still love mine.
They are great fun, even with my grandkids.
A
I found one of these in my friends garage. I have never played with one before. When I got his going it was spinning soo fast, it was crazy, I thought it was going to explode lol
Lots of fun and learning for young minds that have no concept of how electricity is even made.
A
You’re welcome for the hundredth sub
Thanks Ashton.
Great
These are lots of fun, sometimes I even let the grandkids look at it!
A
I was able to get some special strike anywhere matches at a hiking store. I used them on the trail and they worked.
There are some great products available but I do like to make my own fire starters to show the grandkids how its done. Thanks for sharing Jacob.
A
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch your welcome.
some of the best toys 40 years ago are still some of the best toys today :o)
oh all you young kids sitting at your play staytions. if you knew what you're missing...
My kids and grand kids still play with these when they visit. Glad you like it and thanks for watching.
Hi Alec, congratulations for being an old fashion master! your grandchildren should be very happy when playing with these toys!
What´s the maximun load you connect to the steam machine? How many saws at the same time???
Thanks Javier. Don't know of any limit as if there is enough steam it will drive all my accessories. What! Let the grand kids play with it, okay but only for a little while.
Very nice. Envious
Thanks! Kid, grandkids, friends all love playing with it.
A.
Happy New Year Alec and great video! We just fired up our new Wilesco D21 for the first time on New Year's day. I have a question for you... Do you know how I can line up the pressure valve so that the gauge is facing forward? I've tried multiple combinations of gaskets and the gauge always tightens up facing anywhere but forward. Thank you from your neighbor down here in Virginia.
Mine has always faced forward. Try wrapping two turns of teflon tape to see if that tightens it more to your liking. Or send a note to the company asking for assistance to get the valve in a more acceptable position. Thanks for watching Charlie.
You can buy strike anywhere matches in Lancaster, Pa.
Good to know Robert.
A
Yup my father had one and handed it down to me and my brother country boys
These can be a great learning toy for young kids on how machines work.
I am teaching STEM. I would like to talk with you if at all possible. The extra devices that you have in the back of the steam engine such as the drill, grinder etc. I would like to know where can I purchase those items? Great video.
Here is where to get all the Wilesco products (there is lots).
Wilesco - D18 Steam Engine + accessories
- www.wilesco-shop.de/en/stationary-steam-engines/d18-steam-engine.html
Alec, would you recommend the D18 or the D20?
Is both a bad thing? The D20 has a bigger flywheel but not the street light of the D18. Tough call so ask your kids or grandkids which. Thanks for watching.
Where can we find these around Toronto? I see them online but would be worried ordering and having it delivered damaged. Do hobby shops sell them? I'm a Power Engineer for almost 18 years and don't have one of these at home 😃
I looked and you can order the D18 main unit from Amazon.ca. Any problem and you get a refund. Just as easy ordering from Wilesco directly and they pack it the same for everyone. I never had a problem with online. Don't know any local stores with them in stock.
A
How aboout a steam lumber mill and use it to make all the wood for a doll house ... then make the doll house ... furniture, huse floors joists roof the whole deal use the metal shop for all the metal stuff etc ... a complete doll house built by steam power in kit form then sell the kits as available
Thats a good idea but my grandkids are outdoors types and the girls are teenagers not. Still its lots of fun to show them how old power tools worked.
A.
What type of oil do you use to lubricate that Alec? 3 in 1?
That works best as only 1-2 drops are needed. Sometimes it's a drop of 3-1 on a q-tip to lub moving parts just a little.
A
👍👍👍👏👏👏
Thank you.

Hi Alec - thanks for posting this. Our son just received a Wilesco generator for Christmas from my Dad. we had a great time building it together and watching it run. For your power transmission shaft - you may not know, but outside Toronto there is a water-powered sawmill that still has the old woodshop set up to run on the old belt-drives. Look for "Tyrone Mills" and if you are ever in the area, go for a visit. You'll be able to step back about 150 years and see the old mill pond, workshop etc. It's all there and open to see. (And the pizza they cook with the wood scraps isn't bad either!) www.tyronemill.net/
Thanks for sharing this Chris. If I ever get out of lockdown, will go and visit. Stay safe.
Hı Alec hello gudaftırnon Is there a machine for sale
Sorry none of mine are for sale but this and many other Ranch Toys can be ordered from Wilesco at www.wilesco.de.
Sounds like a v8!😂
A great sound right?
A
Buy more!
I do. May show them another time.

@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch nice. Plz do I love your videos on steam enginrs5
Hello Alec, nice post. Are you from USA? Greetings from Germany, 52 miles from the Wilesco factory.
T.Wagner
I live in Ontario, Canada. My mothers side of the family came from Germany so we are almost related.
You could say it like this. Have a nice Christmas time for you and your family.
Ship me a D32
Me in another 20 years
Don't wait, start collecting bit by bit now until your grandkids beg to visit to play with it.
@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch ...come, come..we both know you like to play with the toys more than the grand kids do. 😂😂😂😂 i can see it on your face. In my case they will visit and then complain i'm playing by myself and not sharing.
Really nice steam engine.
But the worst filming iv’e ever seen👎🏻
We do try but it's a one take shoot mostly. Thanks for the feedback.

@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch feels more authentic to me. I like it. Awesome steam display, came here for inspiration for my own
Because of this video I just ordered one where can I get the tools
You will have a great time with it. Get the kids//grandkids/cousins... to join in making the layout and testing each one. All my kids, boys and girls, learned about safety and electricity from this.

@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch thank you sir I just found the tools on Amazon and found some different ones too these is a worker painting a wall an another running a drill press
